U yfi m. THE TIGER SIXTY-EIGHT In Memory Of Nancy Jane Bayley 2 In Dedication To Richard Dermody 3 Editor’s Letter The 1968 “TIGER” staff has striven to make this yearbook one that you will trea- sure in future years. We hope that when you look at this book in years to come that you will relive all of the exciting moments that the staff has tried to capture for you. We have made an effort to record not only the happenings of the senior class but of the whole school by devoting pages to the other classes. By correlating the happy and the serious aspects of our brief stay at Ipswich High School, we hope that we have presented a well-rounded view of what has taken place daily in our lives. The yearbook is a record of that period of our lives during which we have received our basic education and the character traits that will be so essential when we go out into the world. Our class has had the reputation as the one that was constantly throwing out tra- dition and bringing in new ideas. We have endeavored to live up to this reputation in the yearbook, also. First, we have had a cover, specially made for us, the like of which no other class has ever had. Next, we have photographed the senior officers a way that is quite striking and out of the ordinary. Finally, we have used a sepia ink to highlight one of the candid sections. I, as editor-in-chief, would like to say that I hope you get as much enjoyment out of reading the book as we did in designing it. I would like to thank both our advisor, Mr. William Laakso, who gave us immeasurable assistance during the year, and the wonderful staff, without whose help this book would never have been published. Charles H. Cooper Editor-in-Chief 4 Principal’s Letter Your first, and in some cases your final phase of formal education has been com- pleted. Congratulations on achieving your diploma from Ipswich High School. Now your real challenge begins. Many of you will continue your schooling, many will enter into the buisness world, a few of you will enter into marriage. In any case your responsibilities will be great. Pressures from all sides will bear upon you. You will be engulfed by a much larger and more demanding society than our school has afforded. I am sure that you will meet these demands well. Each of you can contribute much to our world. Your individuality is perhaps your greatest asset— use it wisely. In meeting the demands of society you must never lose sight of this individuality, for each of you is unique and in this uniqueness you have much to offer. You have left your mark at Ipswich— go on to greater and more rewarding endeavors. Joseph R. Rogers, Principal 5 Superintendent’s Letter It is always a pleasure and an honor to address a graduating class through the medium of their year book. For the class of 1968 I venture the theme “taking stock.” Where have you been? Who has done it for you? How do you respond? ‘Stock taking’ is partly financial and partly informational. The information seg- ment is the guide to future actions. Financially your community and your parents have paid school tuition of $6000 to $8500 over 12 years at today’s costs for you to attend modern schools, staffed by professional teachers and served by fine people who live in your community and whose children go to school with you. According to the distance from your home to your school, you were transported by bus. You could choose a nutritionally balanced school lunch or one from home as you preferred. By world standards you were and are well clothed, well fed, and per- haps indulged. Did you grow up in a youth centered community? Were you pro- vided opportunities in Boy and Girl Scouting, Little and Pony Leagues, summer and winter recreational programs? Have you thought how your police, your town fathers, and your teachers tried to understand that ‘growing up’ is a big job? How many of you have thought or remembered that your classmates who were sick or handicapped in almost any way were tutored or aided toward their goal by the community as represented by its churches, private groups, the schools or an agency of the town? Now at graduation time the expectation! What is it? The hope is that each one of you will slowly as you are able assume the responsibilities that others have borne for you. This is the beginning, the ‘Commencement’ of do it yourself; I hope not just for yourself as an individual, but doing something for others. This ancient idea expressed either religiously or secularly may be what the Class of 1968 and all American youth want to believe and act upon. 6 Our School Committee Mrs. Nancy Thompson, Mr. Frank Amaro, Mr. George Geanakos, Mr. Joseph Carpenter, Dr. Robert Waite, Mr. Edwin Damon, Mr. Robert Weatherall. 7 Administration Mr. Rodney R. It has been a great experi ence for me to go to the school and to live in a family here. I have many good friends that have made my stay very suc- cessful for me. So I feel I have a lot to thank you for. I am the oldest of four boys in my family. My father is a custodian in a school and my mother is substituting in public school. We live on the west coast of Norway outside a fishing-town called Aalesund (40,000 inhabitants). I have completed one year of gymnasium and hope to become a veterinarian. I heard about the A.F.S. program three years ago, and thought that that was something for me. The reasons why I wanted to go to the U.S. were that I am interested in knowing about other peoples’ customs, ways of life and want to get out in the world. And I certainly have an opportunity to do this here as an A.F.S. student. Since I left Nor- way. I have met students from about 30-40 different countries. Besides I am living in an American family and am experiencing the American way of life. I am very thankful that I have this opportunity because it means very much to me. I have learned that people can have different religions, customs and thoughts about differ- ent things, but we can still live together in harmony. The purpose of the A.F.S. pro- gram is to bring more understanding between peoples. I believe that this is impor- tant today and that this program gives us the best opportunity to fulfill that purpose. This year has meant a lot to me and I know that I will never forget the many good times we had in school or outside. And I hope to get a chance to see you again sometime. 0ystein 0rjasaeter 66 Shonny gets his class ring. G-R-R Guess Who? We could NOT have danced all night. 77 Class History Ingenuity and discovery have played a major role in developing the education on which our futures will be based. All our paths will lead to different roads, but our characters and goals will be a result of our endeavors here at Ipswich High School. Our experiences have been numerous and varied, but most of all, unforgettable. Our first spirited effort to make it known that there were freshmen existing in the school was displayed at the football season’s first rally. A huge, colorful poster adorned the gym wall, picturing a charging tiger backed up by bold letters shouting, “GO TIGERS-THE FRESHMEN ARE RIGHT BEHIND YOU!” Competition was stiff in several areas that year, as demonstrated by the famed ri- valry between the freshmen and junior girls over their prized male half. To the vic- tors (the freshmen girls) went the spoils! Offices for class leaders that year went to Richard Savage, president; Stephen Goodhue, vice-president; Donald Skeffington, treasurer; and Linda LeClair, secre- tary. To represent us in the Student Council were: Candy Gerry, Patricia Donovan (serving as Council’s reporter), Richard Savage, Linda LeClair, and Donald Curran. In February, the class showed tremendous creativity in decorating for our very first dance based on the jungle theme, “Safari.” The cafeteria was mysteriously lit with green and blue lights, and the walls and rafters were vividly covered with jun- gle vegetation and colorful, life-size jungle animals. A grass-covered porch housed the chaperones near one wall of the room. Even the floor was decorated with the unintended paint outline of a giraffe. On the academic level as freshmen, we enjoyed the new language lab— a much needed aid to “La Franeais.” We were also honored to have Mr. Rizvi, a scholar from India, teaching for the history department. Freshmen Biology held memorable experiences like collecting one hundred insects, categorized and labeled. Following a long desired summer vacation, we returned to the school as sopho- mores. We elected officers once again who were: Donald Curran, president; Sharon Carter, vice-president; Donald Skeffington, treasurer; and Linda LeClair, secretary. Our voices in Student Council were: Carol Campus, Joan Kasprysyk, Candy Gerry, and Donald Curran, the Council’s treasurer. Our sophomore year revealed true school spirit when we painted huge, lettered 78 boxes spelling “GO TIGERS,” which were placed like building blocks at one of our more important football rallys. Spirited sophomore girls were chosen for cheer- leaders that fall. Jessica Amaro and Judy Gorniewicz were selected as future heads and Sharon Carter and Carol Campus as regulars, with Marina Galanis and Joni Warren as substitutes. The sophomore dance, held in the early spring, was centered on the well-known Shakespearean play, a “Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Shiny foil stars were suspended from the ceiling of the cafeteria, creating the effect of a blue night skv. It was this year, too, that the Ski Club made itself famous by the surprising “skills” they demonstrated on their various excursions to the mountains. Our next year as juniors at Ipswich High proved interesting in many respects. Several of our boys played varsity basketball and aided the team to twelve victo- ries and only two losses, taking the Tech Tourney. Members selected for National Honor Society that year were: Diane McKenzie, Richard Savage, Pamela Courlouras, Carl Oldfield, and Donald Curran. To help us through as juniors, the class re-elected the officers of the previous year and support- ed them a third time in our Senior Election. Student Council members were: Cathy Duff, Judy Gorniewicz, Joan Kaspryzyk, with Candy Gerry as Council secretary and Donald Curran as Council treasurer. In October, we held our very successful “Trick or Victory” Dance. That same month we received our class rings, which everyone marvelled at for the next few days. Christmas time offered gifts of jov, as did the surprise Christmas party in Geome- try. A festively decorated cake was contributed bv Tommy Kaszuba. Spring and summer soon dawned upon us, along with thoughts of the Junior Prom. In line with our individuality, we chose the scenic Castle Hill for the dance, naming “Au Chateau” as our theme. Jessica Amaro was elegantly crowned as Queen of the Prom. Later in the evening, we were catered to dinner in the Castle’s lovely dining room. The Annual Crane’s Beach Picnic was especially memorable as rival classes vied for one another’s section marker flags. The juniors were victorious, however, and proved so with a tree for a flagpole and a freshly painted flag waving the words, “VICTORS— 68” in bright orange letters. 79 It was at this time in our junior year that we showed tremendous class unity and pride. Our Senior year is the most memorable of all. We finally received legal permis- sion to our Senior privileges, (like cutting in the lunch line, although we had been doing it for the past three years). Accustomed to struggling with tradition and striving for originality, we held the annual football victory dance on the night of the first home game, instead of the first game of the season, which was played out of town the week before. Co-Captains of the football team were Robert Tilton and Stephen Goodhue. Out of eight games played, Ipswich won 4 lost 4. The memorable game was the rainy Thanksgiving game with Hamilton-Wenham. Despite the cold and drizzly rain. Tiger fans staunchly cheered our Ipswich boys, although they lost 24-0. Senior representatives to Student Council were elected in the school year. They were: Candy Gerrv as Council president; Judy Gorniewicz as Council secretary; Don- ald Curran, Cathv Duff, and John Geanoulis. Our senior girls displaced extraordinary ability in the Intramural Basketball Play- off between the senior homeroom 321 and the junior homeroom 328. Coached and cheered by the senior boys, our girls rose to victory with a score 7-5. Our Representative to Girl’s State was Diane McKenzie, with Pamela Coulouras her alternate. The Boy’s State representative chosen was Carl Oldfield, and Stephen Goodhue. The D.A.R. Citizenship Award was given to Judv Gorniewicz and the Harvard Book Award to Donald Curran. Our Class was verv fortunate to have the A.F.S. student, 0vstein 0rjasater, from Norway this year. “SHOWY” participated in many sports and activities and was well-liked by everyone. We truly hope he can come to visit again. Outstanding class pride was effectively shown at Christmas time when the seniors erected a thirtv-foot Christmas Tree in front of the school. Lights were bought for it and will be passed down to the underclassmen. Many memories lie behind us now; the discoveries we have made, the things we have done. No matter where our paths lead us or what road we travel, we will always be able to turn around and look back at our unforgettable days at Ipswich High.
