5 National News — 1965 1 A Wave for Friends — Cuban refugees waved to Cuban exiles on shore as their coast guard cutter approached Key West last fall. Such emotional scenes occurred frequently after Castro announced his “open door” policy, allowing certain groups of Cubans to leave his dictatorship. 2 Pioneer in Space — Astronaut Edward White stepped from his Gemini IV space capsule and into the void of space last June. Maj. James McDivitt, his companion on a S ' z-day orbital flight, had to coax White back into the capsule after he had traveled 20 minutes sus- pended from Gemini IV. Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad were the next space twins to orbit the earth. They completed their 8-day flight in Gemini V during August. 3 Medicare Bill Signed — President Johnson signed the Medicare Bill into law July 30 with former President Truman at his side. Witness- ing the event that had far-reaching effects on Social Security benefits for the elderly were (left to right) Lady Bird Johnson, Vice President Humphrey and Bess Truman. The ceremony was held in Truman Library in Independence, Mo. 4 Temporary Mood — Dodgers Manager Walter Alston’s mood of de- jection after the Minnesota Twins won the sixth World Series game did not last long. The Dodgers emerged victorious in the 7th game and captured the pennant. 5 Double Space Spectacular — Astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford got this view of the Gemini 7 spaceship December 15 while traveling in their Gemini 6 craft for their historic rendezvous adven- ture. Schirra and Stafford rode their red-hot craft back to earth the following day, but Gemini 7 completed a 14-day mission before its re-entry. Making the longest and most significant voyage in space in Gemini 7 were Frank Borman and James Lovell, Jr. 6 Plea for Peace — Pope Paul VI stood before the United Nations General Assembly in New York on October 4 to deliver his plea for 3 world peace. His unprecedented, one-day visit in the U.S. was the culmination of plans by men of all faiths. 7 After Surgery — President Johnson was photographed in a reclining chair at Bethesda Naval Hospital the day after his gall bladder op- eration on October 8. He conducted the work of his office from his hospital room and his Texas ranch during his recuperation. 8 Proud Student — Charles Craig, 19-year-old freshman at Iowa uni- versity, demonstrated his criticism of draft-card burning incidents by displaying his draft card on his jacket with the note: “I’m a draft card carrying American and proud of it.” Our role in the Vietnamese war sparked the incidents. 9 Blackout — The glittering metropolis of New York City was thrust into darkness on November 9 by a massive power failure affecting hundreds of miles along the eastern seaboard. City residents and commuters were stranded in offices, railroad and subway stations for hours before service was restored. The crippling condition was caused by a faulty relay at a Canadian generating station near Niagara Falls. 10 New Ambassador — Arthur Goldberg was named U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations by the President after the death of Ambassa- dor Adlai Stevenson on July 14 in London. Goldberg was secretary of labor under President Kennedy and a U.S. Supreme Court Justice when named to the U.N. post. 1 1 Startling Fashions — Bold and contrasting blocks of color were the youthful fashion note of 1965. The eye-catching designs even ex- tended the length of campus stockings worn with the costumes. 1 2 Royalty on Tour — Princess Margaret and her husband. Lord Snowdon, arrived in New York on November 4 for a whirlwind tour of the U.S. During their visit, they took time out for fun-filled activi- ties such as a ride on a cable car in Frisco and gala parties in Holly- wood and the nation’s capital. Introduction V § M V A y. M In the following pages, the 1966 Tiger Staff has endeavored to capture, both in word and picture, the final year of the Class of 1966 at Ipswich High School. Several great events and many lesser ones are vividly recorded in this yearbook. We have strived for an accurate record of the people and the events of the past year, many of which would, no doubt, be forgotten were they not preserved in repositories such as this for reference in the future when these happenings will have deeper meaning for you. At such a time, a quiet thrill, different from any other, will fill your heart as you relive the past year with those who shared it with you. To keep pace with the current trends, this staff has abandoned the traditional yearbook with hopes of producing a pictorial review, which should evoke plea- surable reflection in the years to come. We hope you will appreciate our book, will refer to it frequently as time goes on, and, twenty or more years from now, will gain even greater pleasure as you peruse the pages depicting life at Ipswich High School in the school year ending in 1966. Again, we, the staff, wish you enjoyment in the reading of our new book, and I, as chief editor, want to thank our advisor, Mrs. Roberts, and the rest of my fine staff for the wonderful job they have done in bringing the whole yearbook to fruition. Robert Pojasek Editor-in-chief y t 2 Dedicated to Our Advisor Mrs. Marjorie Roberts “Friend, of our infinite dreams Little enough endures; Little however it seems, It’s yours, all yours.’’ 3 4 5 Editor Robert Pojasek Composing Editor Kathy Wile Editor in charge of Layout Jill Pickard Business Manager Joanne Perrowicz Advertising Chairman Thomas Smith 6 Photography Pam Rhoades, Ed Dziadul Sports Ann Trask, Roland Hinckley Layout Committee Diana Argeropoulos, Joyce Geanoulis, Sandy Woodworth Literary Margot Cleary, Nancy Gerry Advertising Committee Carmilla Smith, Polly Moutevilis, Ann Vi- ladenis, Mike Girard, Tom Smith, Rich- ard Horsman, Susan Stankus, Larry Wanzer. 7 Senior Section FRONT ROW: Joanne Federico, Dorothy Tyniee, Mary Shepard. The Tiger Staff would like to express respect and admiration for the members of the Ipswich School Committee for their founding of the Ipswich School Commit- tee Award. We feel that this award gives credit to those students who fulfill the most essential obligations in school life by achieving good grades. We think this is an important contribution to the list of awards presented to students of Ip- swich High School, and we are deeply grateful. 10 Mr. Joseph Rogers Principal of Ipswich High Mr. Rodney Wood Superintendent of Schools Mr. Raymond Neifosh — Guidance Mr. Joseph Battaglio — Guidance 11 June 1966 Seniors, in these times of great achievement in space, you are truly stepping into the unknown — into the vastness not only of the world, as you have known it, but also of the entire universe. As you venture from the bounds of your home and town, I should like to leave with you a brief message: you must possess an unbounding faith — faith in yourself and in those with whom you associate. Even though your interests and aims differ, there will be those beneath you in position and those above you; you will not walk alone. A strong faith in yourself will strengthen your attitudes to- wards those surrounding you, and those attitudes, in turn, will help you attain your individual goals. The world beyond the confines of Ipswich High School awaits you. May God speed you on your way as you go forth to find your place. Joseph R. Heidi was brought to us through the efforts of the American Field Service and has made her home with Judy Weltchek and her parents. When Heidi returns to her own home in Kenttn, southern Germany, she will have another year of school to complete to have the equivalent of our high school education. She hopes to continue her studies in the field of sociology. Her other interests include skiing, skating, swimming, and music. We wish Heidi good luck in the years to come and hope she will always remember her year at Ipswich High School. Heidi with her American family. Heidi studying 42 Class History For the past four years, we of the Class of 1966 have been building a foundation for the future. For many of us, this foundation will be completed on Graduation Day. Many others will continue their studies at colleges and schools of higher learning. Through these years we have established a reputation for ourselves as being in- dividualistic and close-knit. Looking back, we recall a number of memorable experiences. We began building this foundation in the fall of 1962 when we entered Ipswich High School as freshmen. This first year was spent at what is presently the junior high school, and we attended classes in the morning session. To lead us through this first confusing year we chose as officers William Gauthier, president; Bob Howard, vice- president; Anne Viladenis, secretary; and Mary Shep- pard, treasurer. Delegates to the student council were Elaine Georgeopoulos, Chris Wade, Edward Sullivan, and Nancy Gerry. Long practice was rewarded when the cheering competi- tion saw fourteen girls named to positions on the two squads, with Stefany Amaro and “Kiki” Viladenis re- ceiving posts as regular varsity cheerleaders and Sandy Clark and Ann Pickul acting as junior varsity heads. Paul Doyon and Bill Gauthier co-captained our unde- feated frosh football team, whose success depended largely on Coach Burke’s questionable lonesome-end” play. Even as freshmen we showed some individualism. We aroused the curiosity of those attending our ‘‘Shamrock Shuffle” dance by covering the walls and the lobby with wandering paper footprints. Our f irst and last year at the old high school passed quickly and, after a much-needed summer vacation, we returned to classes, this time at the brand-new Ipswich High School. The first few days proved quite confusing, but we soon adjusted and our second year got under way. 44 President David Fyrberg led us during our sophomore year, with the assistance of Vice-president Peggy LeClair, Secretary Anne Viladenis, and Treasurer Mary Sheppard. We were represented in the Student Council by Ed Dziadul, Elaine Georgeopoulos, Peggy LeClair, and Nancy Gerry. This year proved to be a most enlightening one for the sopho- more boys, who made the startling discovery that there were girls in the class, as well as boys. We sophomore girls exhibited our talent (?) as football players when we joined with the juniors to top the freshman-senior team later in the fall in a “Powder-Puff” football game. Many of us were members of the very active and highly success- ful Latin Club during our sophomore year. Everyone was thrilled by Steve Ray’s remarkably accurate portrayal of glamorous Cleo- patra in one of the club’s projects. We sponsored our sophomore dance in February, again display- ing our uniqueness by selecting and carrying out our theme “Ad- ventures in Paradise.” We remember the afternoons in the cafe- teria painting sunsets and piecing together hula dancers and palm trees. Pete Adamowicz, who was later to become our class athlete, set a number of school records during his sophomore year. Before we realized it, the first half of our high school lives had passed, and we suddenly found ourselves upperclassmen. Officers elected to guide us through our junior year were David Fyrberg, president; Sandy Clark, vice-president; “Kiki” Viladenis, secretary; and Mary Sheppard, treasurer. Elaine Georgeopoulos, Ed Dziadul, Nancy Noe, and Nancy Gerry were our Student Council representatives. Our highly successful junior “Shindig” was held in the early fall. We recall the near-tragedy which occurred while decorating for this function. The ladder fell out from under Dave Warner, who found himself hanging precariously from the cafeteria beams. Dave received great comfort from the words of advice of Mr. Tom Lucas: “Don’t panic, Dave; hang on!” It was at this dance that our great class spirit came to light. 1 45 In fact, exhibitions of class spirit were visible on rocks, roads, fences, and buildings throughout the town, and a contingent of juniors even voluntarily decorated the or- ange water tower near Baker’s Pond. Not many of us will forget the great “war” with the freshman girls that fall. How we almost resorted to vio- lence when the junior boys sided with the freshmen! In October the long-awaited class rings arrived. Aquama- rine proved to be the overwhelmingly favorite color choice with boys and girls alike. Our greatest effort at individualism was the never-to-be- forgotten Junior Prom held in January. Decorating, un- decorating, and decorating again, together with guided tours of the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms made pre- paring for the Prom almost as memorable as the night itself. Under the direction of Jill Pickard, the decora- tions committee, with the help of almost every junior, constructed colorful shields, a hanging balcony, and a moat to create the setting for Camelot. Richard Hors- man and Maureen Wright reigned as King and Queen for the evening. The affair was followed by dinner at the Ipswich House. Several junior boys were members of Coach Burke’s spectacular wrestling team, which chalked up a perfect record that winter. The spring brought the selection of Pete Adamowicz and Chester Obremski as our delegates to Boys’ State, and Anne Viladenis and alternate Judy Weltchek as de- legates to Girls’ State. Juniors, tapped and inducted into the National Honor Society, included Joanne Fede- rico, Margot Cleary, Bob Pojasek, Jill Pickard, and Nancy Gerry. 46 Many of us served as hosts for the visiting delegates to the Massachusetts As- sociation of Student Councils’ annual convention, which was held in Ipswich. Camilla Smith and Judy Comeau gained recognition by taking runner-up posi- tions in the girls’ portion of the American Dory Races. The annual Crane’s Picnic brought a new feature — patrolling the dunes. A number of us were bequeathed most unusual gifts in the will of the Class of 1965, among them a bulletproof shoe, a better left hook, and various titles in the “Rat Pack.’’ Another year was rapidly nearing completion. The final assembly saw the Har- vard Book Award go to Bob Pojasek and the D.A.R. Awards for Excellence in History presented to Bob and also to Margot Cleary. In the fall of 1965 we began what would be our last year at Ipswich High. Dave Fyrberg, Joanne Federico, “Kiki” Viladenis, and Mary Sheppard served us in the capacity of officers. The senior class delegates to the Student Council were Elaine Georgeopoulos, Nancy Noe, Margot Cleary, and Nancy Gerry. Heidi Vogel, our exchange student from Germany, was a quiet but welcome ad- dition to our class. Another vote saw the election of our steering committee, which has guided us through this all-important year. With the rank of senior, came the traditional privileges. We were finally able to cut in to the lunch line — legally. The faculty didn’t especially care for our vari- ous innovations in haircuts, clothes, and dancing. Senior homeroom 325 was one of the most popular places to visit during home- room period because of the almost daily football films and the refreshments, which (rumor has it) might have been smuggled in through the windows. Bob Pojasek, one of our top-ranking students, returned to us in October fol- lowing a bout with tuberculosis. At the traditional senior-sponsored Victory Dance following the first football game, we celebrated our 27-6 win over Cathedral of Boston. The highlight of the season was an impressive 19-0 victory over our arch-rival Masconomet. We proudly note that this was the first time in our high school careers that the Tig- ers had handed the Chieftains a defeat. We were justifiably proud of the football team led by co-captains Ron Como and Baird Thomas, as Ipswich finished the season with a near perfect 7-1-1 record. No sooner had the footballs been put away than our basketball-playing Tigers, co-captained by Skip Cressey and Pete Adamowicz, began their season. On the subject of class celebrities, we must note that although the records fail to show it, “Kiki” Viladenis was an outstanding choice for Class Weasel. Pete Adamowicz was selected as our representative to Student Government Day. We look into the immediate future to Class Day, our Senior Prom, and, ultimate- ly, graduation night for the Class of 1966. Looking beyond this, we see the rich- est part of our lives ahead. We hope that we have laid the foundation well and that we will continue to be unique by remaining as close in the future as we have been in the preceding years. The success of our futures depends greatly on these past years. They shouldn’t and won’t be forgotten. Varsity Seniors 69 This year’s Ipswich Tigers compiled an outstanding record of 7 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. Included in the victories was a 19-0 vic- tory over arch-rival Masconomet, the first victory in five years over that opponent. The Tigers were sparked by the leadership of a fine group of seniors and, as a result, the Tigers finished high in the state ratings. The team, which wasn’t supposed to finish higher than sixth in the league, started well, winning 8 out of the first 9 games. Among these victories were wins over rival Hamilton- Wenham 47-46, an exciting come-from-behind victory over Masconomet 72-66, and a well- fought victory over the eventual league cham- pion No. Reading 45-38. The famed physician, who reached his 90th birthday in January, worked most of his life to relieve the suffering of jungle natives. 2 Queen Speaks — Queen Elizabeth II dedicated the John F. Kennedy memorial at Runnymede, England on May 14. Mrs. Kennedy is seated to the left and Prince Philip to the right of the queen. Carolyn Kennedy is seated between the queen and her mother, and Sen. Robert Kennedy stands behind Mrs. Kennedy. 3 Miss Universe — The reigning queen of beauty in the universe dur- ing the year was a representative from Thailand. 4 Bosch Returns — Former Dominican Republic President Juan Bosch was vehement in his address at a rally September 25, shortly after his return to Santo Domingo. 5 Wins in Run-Off— Ch3i e deGaulle polled 55.2 per cent of the vote in a run-off election against Francois Mitterrandon December 19. The vote gave DeGaulle the French presidency for another 7 years, but the strength of the Socialist-Communistic candidate corroded the popularity of the 71 -year-old president.. 6 Agrees to Cease-Fire — Pakistani Foreign Minister Zulfikar Bhutto (right) agreed in the U.N. Security Council on September 22 to ac- cept the Council’s cease-fire order in the undeclared war between Pakistan and India. Pakistan’s announcement came after India had agreed to the order. 7 Abortive Coup Fails — Indonesian President Sukarno was toppled from power for a brief 20 hours last fall. He gestured at a cabinet meeting on October 6 during his first public appearance after the coup, which seriously shook his one-man rule. 8 Soviet Winner — Russian author Mikhail Sholokhov was vacationing in the Ural region on October 18 when he heard he had been awarded the 1965 Nobel Prize for Literature. The December award ceremony was held in Stockholm. 9 Return to Desolation — Hundreds of families returned to the wreckage of their homes, destroyed by eruption of Taal volcano, south of Ma- nila, on September 28. Volcanic ash covered a six-mile-square area. The death toll was estimated at 500. 10 Price of War — The number of casualties increased as the U.S. stepped up its military action in Vietnam. American advisors took part in many helicopter missions, carrying wounded soldiers, both Vietnamese and American, to copters on makeshift litters for evac- uation to Saigon. 1 1 Reason to Celebrate — Chancellor Ludwig Erhard of West Germany waved to a cheering crowd in Bonn after his Christian Democrats surged to victory in the September 19 parliamentary elections. Mayor Willy Brandt’s Social Democrats suffered defeat in the voting. 1 2 Colonial Rule Shaken — Rhodesian Premier Ian Smith broadcast a proclamation of sovereign independence for Rhodesia on November 1 1 . The split from Britain was made in an attepipt to insure a white minority rule of the African colony. It was the first such move against Britain since the American colonies broke away in 1776. Britain re- taliated swiftly and took the problem to the U.N. Security Council, which tisked all nations to enforce an oil embargo against the Afri- can colony.
