not very sanutary and could stand much umprovement I do not lunger at my uob for I have so much to accom plush I am allotted only a very short tume for my lunch whuch us very sparse Feelung quute exhausted now I return to work for the long afternoon sessuon Upon r turnung home after a hard days work I am agaun confronted wuth my many household chores If I am fortunate enough to have a few munutes and a newspaper at hand I usually read along and fund that the newspaper tells me only what my government wants me to know and belueve I do not own a raduo by whuch I can hear the latest slanted news of the day and of course a televusuon set us just a dream to me Socually I have luttle recreatuon uf any at all My actuvutues are Iumuted as I am separated from my fruends and therefore cannot meet them I cannot go to any ultra modern shoppung centers as they too are unheard of here My clothes are not bought un a fashuonable store but are handed down to me I cannot attend movues or concerts nor does the thought of a vacatuon trup ever full my mund As for as my reluguous lufe us concerned I do not have the rught to choose my own fauth If I am to attend a church I must go to the church whuch has been set asude for the people If I refuse to do so I cannot proctuce my own fauth Then at the end of the day when I have accomplushed my dutues I reture to bed possessed wuth a feelung of fear and uncertaunty my home wuth my own famuly un a fune respectable com After a peaceful nughts sleep I awaken at euther an early or a late hour dependung upon my day s In my case I awaken wuth the untentuon of attendung school uf ut happens to be a weekday Possessed wuth such an untentuon I eat a hearty breakfast and start the day off wuth a happy healthy attutude After I have attended my classes I usually have several hours for recreatuon My fruends and I can gather to talk to dance and to have an afternoon snack I am able to vouce my opunuon and to offer crutucusm as long as I remember to respect the rughts of others munuty schedule Fulled wuth the desure to catch up on the latest news of the day I have access to a number of newspapers I can easuly read one of several dufferent newspapers I fund on the whole that they present the news umpartually and that I may consult edutoruals for dufferent unterpreta tuons of the news whuch help me to make up my own mund I also have the use of a raduo and televusuon set whuch provude me wuth unformatuon on the questuons of the day as well as wuth entertaunung programs for recrea tuon My socual lufe us very extensuve I am able to get a druvers lucense at the age of suxteen and usually have the use of the famuly car I can travel to neughborung towns and cutues whenever the tume us convenuent for me as well as go on shoppung trups as often as I lke I attend the movues and vuew the puctures on a regular suzed screen as well as un three dumensuon and cunema scope My movements are defunutely not restrauned or lumuted I have a rught to o free educatuon from the tume I reach the age of sux years untul I have completed hugh school Durung my hugh school days I select my own curruculum accordung to my needs and abulutues un order to prepare for the future If however I wush to further my educatuon I am able to do so at my own expense Sunce travelung and vacatuon trups appeal to me greatly I have the freedom of movement and can take many pleasure trups whenever I have the tume One of my favorute trups us to the fascunatung crowded cuty of New York Here I can spend my tume sughtseeung as well as vusutung fruends I can go to the top of the Empure State Buuldung vusut The Statue of Luberty and see The Unuted Natuons un actuon For a more entertaunung scope I attend musucals or Broadway huts at any of the numerous theaters I have the rught to come and go as I please a pruvulege that I make constant use of every day Then too upon the arruval of Sunday I attend the church of my own fauth I can defunutely choose my own fauth and practuce ut accordungly Keepung un mund that ones chouce of a fauth us structly between humself and has conscuence I take specual care not to beluttle any one else s fauth Polutucally I know that one of my greatest pruvuleges us the rught to vote Although I am not yet of votung age I understand the umportance that votung plays un the well beung of my country, and I am Iookung forward to the day when I too wull have the pruvulege of votung l always keep un mund that through thus pruvulege I am permutted to choose the representatuves and offucers un the local state and natuonal governments l know that uf I foul to do so I cannot expect to be represented un the way that to me seems rught In addutuon I am able to uoun many clubs and organuzatuons The aums of these organuzatuons may be expressed un varuous ways but behund all theur words I determune one true sugnuflcance to better the lnvung condutuons of all the cutuzens of the Unuted States Thus us most evudent un our govern ment whuch us of the people by the people and for the people I am possessed wuth a feelung of securuty a wonder ful feelung of undependence My feelung of securuty em anates from the rughts and pruvuleges bestowed upon me by my cutuzenshup un such a fune country the Unuted States as well as from the fact that I am secure from any untrusuon un my home from people who, for some reason or other want to search my property wuthout a warrant Consuderung the strong vuvud contrast between lufe un 0 country of tyrannucal servutude and lufe un a freedom Iovung country wuth hugh democratuc udeals I affurm that most of us can see gust how umportant and valuable our rughts and pruvuleges of cutuzenshup to the Unuted States are We should always consuder ourselves the most fortunate people un the world and hope that un the fu ture some of the less fortunate people un thus great world may also have the freedom we now enjoy l31l . , . MARILYN Today many of the catazens of Ameraca seem ot be concerned only wath the raghts and pravaleges whach our government offers to them They seem to have forgotten the correspondang oblagataons and dutaes that are attend ant upon freedom If you were asked Are you gualty of bad catazenshap? your answer would an all probabalaty be emphatacally negatave Few of us realaze just haw frequently and easaly we do vaolate the good catazenshap law The person who agnores the traffac sagnal ns equally as gualty of thas offense as the person who an some way defrauds the government Unless we accept and carry out our responsabalataes as catazens we wall eventually lose the freedom and democracy whach characteraze our government I belaeve that a good catazen as one who not only accepts the pratectaon and pravaleges offered ham by thas great government but who realazes the oblaga taon amposed by the acceptance of such blessangs Our most amportant oblagataan as to adhere to every law so that we may not vaolate the raghts of fellow catazens There can be no democracy unless we exercase an the fullest measure our responsabalataes as andavaduals We an Ameraca talk extensavely about our Ball of Raghts We are dependent upon our government to see that these raghts contanue We have laved an freedom so long that we are prone to take our Iabertaes for granted and when that happens there as danger of losang them Perhaps the threat to our Republac wall not came from outsade Perhaps we have nothang to fear of Communasm and all the other asms atomac weapons and other modern warfare Perhaps the threat to our great nataon wall come from wathan from you and me because we neglected our responsabalataes We cratacaze our govern ment wathout realaznng that good government can exast only as long as we make at good In I95O approxamately one half of those elagable to vote actually cast a ballot Thas appallang fact means that we are faalang an a most dasastrous way It as not even enough to go to the polls and vote people an Russaa do that they have to In order to vote antellagently we must farst anform our selves by examanang thoroughly every candadate before makang a choace Votang as a pravalege and a duty not to be sharked but to be exercased wath thanksgavang that we are stall free to elect the powers whach govern our country Those who faal to vote are contrabutang to what ever fault they maght fand an the government because they have done nothang to put thear prancaples of good government anto effect The greatest sangle cause of delanquency an catazenshap can be traced perhaps to the declanang sense of respon sabalaty an the home the church the school and the communaty What kand of examples do the parents set who expect thear chaldren to go to church when they themselves faal to go? Abe Martan once phalosophazed The reason a lotta parents aant Ieadan thear chaldren along the raght road as cause they aan t goan that way themselves We need to return to famaly prayers to grace at meals and to the sample honest lavang whach most of us have forgotten an our lafe of rushed advance ment Our parents are responsable for us thear chaldren however they have devaated from thear old fashaoned adeas They are gavang approval to thangs whach were thought dasgraceful when they were adolescents Because of thas we thear chaldren are beang aepraved of tl-e closely knat famaly Iafe whach once produced so many great men and women How much happaer the world would be af everyone belaeved and practaced the old sayang The famaly that prays together stays together Many young men the products of todays homes churches and communataes serve an the armed forces wath feelangs of complaants and batterness The cause of thear rebellaon laes not wath the armed servaces but wath the faalure of the people to grasp the ever present threat facang a free democratac government People faal CITIZENSHIP-OUR INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY ATKINSON 132 to realaze that an order to eradacate the possabalaty of losang our freedom we must have malatary preparataon to protect that freedom Just as malatary servace as the duty of every healthy young man so as constructave preparataon for partacapo taon an government the responsabalaty of every educataon system What good as the educataonal system whach requares the students to recate the Constatutaon and the Ball of Raghts word for word? Unless the students are taught the meanang of these wards of the darect applaca taon to them as andavaduals the whole obaectave wall be lost The home and the school should work an close co operataon ta put the students on the haghest passable level of understandang of the government ats functacns and every andavadual s part an at Jury duty as another servace whach brangs out the faalure of the people to meet thear responsabalaty to catazenshap The people who qualafy for aury duty are frequently other wase occupaed when thear call comes In large cataes rather than small communataes where thas problem as prevalent these same people go to the extremes of em ployang polatacal anfluence to keep from servang thear summons Perhaps af they were to stand traal before a aury composed of people who were not suffacaently pre pared for thear posataons they would comprehend the amportance of fulfallang such a call for servace How small these people would feel af they were to watch a so called traal an Russaa where the accused are denaed the freedom of lawyers auraes and pustace where a forced confessaon ns elacated and where the condemnataon as predetermaned All the freedoms that we Ameracans enjoy are the component parts of our government The basas of our government as the communaty If every communaty wathan the country would undertake a program to amelaorate ats system of government the state and nataonal govern ments would automatacally be relaeved of many respon sabalataes and have more tame and money to accomplash thear own tasks If catazens began an thear respectave communataes to examane thear government and to place only the best qualafaed people an offace the communaty government would amprove The nataonal government has ats roots an the communaty and can thrave only af each catazen fulfalls has oblagataan to hamself has fellow catazens has communaty and has nataon What really cements peoples together as not the statutes of a nataon but the wallangness of the people to accept thear respon sabalataes to that nataon and to cooperate to make a faner happaer world As I mentaoned prevaously we Ameracans thank and talk far too much of our Ball of Raghts General Omar N Bradley had an excellent adea that along wath thas Ball of Raghts we should have a Ball of Dutaes If such a Bsll were drawn up our freedom would be guarded and retaaned by ev ry andavadual Our democracy as con tanually on dasplay before a questaonang world Each of us as the custodaan of thas democracy thas as the real professaon of every Ameracan catazen lt as therefore our andavadual responsabalaty to make certaan that our freedom and democracy are retaaned forever through obedaence and servace In conclusaon then may I quote from the speech that Presadent Cooladge made to the graduates of the Naval Academy an I925 Under our anstatutaons each andavadual as born to sovereagnty What ever he may adopt as a means of Iavelahood has real busaness as servang has country He cannot hold hamself above I-aus fellow men The greatest place of command as really the place of obedaence and the greatest place of honor as really the place of servace It as your duty an the part you propose to take to make the largest con trabutaon you can to the general catazenshap of your country fl ' , . . . . . , - -- ' H ' . .
