With this principle in mind, the Bomb of 1949 presents a pictme of all aspects of collegiate life, covering the unicpie and the high- lights bill not overlooking the n)iuine. The Bomb of 1949 reports the year ' s special e ents and pictures leading faculty and the gradtiating seniors. Athletics, both arsity and intramural, are included and student organizations are gi en space. Campus homes conclude the book, li is the thought of the Bomb staff that a oliune of gieatesl interest demands inclusion of as many students as possible. HE HKxHLK;Hr.S of 11)48-1949 at Iowa State serve as an introduction to the fifty-sixth volinne of the Bomb. Incltided are the traditional festivities such as Veishea and Homecoming and many events that were pecidiar to the period. Glen Brand, an Iowa State engineering student, climaxed a long and victorious na- tional wrestling record by winning a world ' s championship in the 1948 Olympic Games. Millions of dollars of con- struction projects were undertaken and some were brought to completion. Three iniits of the atomic research plant Avere begtm on the campus and the 70-million- ' olt synchro- tron was started. In addition, a new electrical engineering building sprouted up south of the armory and an outdoor dance Hoor was included in the Memorial Union expan- sion. WOI, Iowa State ' s radio voice, set up the highest broadcasting antenna in the state in anticipation of its scheduled FM and television services. Off-campus con- struction included several new student centers to meet growing needs. Meanwhile, Iowa State students were privi- leged to hear a number of distinguished visiting speakers and to enjoy performances by the nation ' s leading musical artists. Campus Varieties and other student staffed enter- tainment provided a lighter measine of recreation. Dozens of new names were added to the impressive roster of Iowa State queens, the beatuies as pretty as ever. Freshman Days and graduation were taken in stride but were bigger than in years before as one might expect with ISC ' s expanded enrollment.
