WIN, H A'wr S, WIN! 4 Gina Weaver Becky Brown Jana Cummings Holly Farnsworth Cindy Harper Lisa Holloway Kari Robnett Brian Todd LLL Iowa Park Cheerleaders — Hard Work Worth the Victories Up at six a.m. and ready to work out by seven-thirty until about five o’clock in the evening, the Iowa Park Cheerleaders have spent all summer preparing for the 1984-85 football and basketball season. They have been through early mornings, tedious exercises, plenty of hard work, lots of money, and a shortage of free time just to fit into a tiny skirt and be peppy for twenty-four hours of the day. As a newcomer to the 1984-85 Hawk cheerleaders. Gina Weaver adds. “People just don’t realize how hard it actually is.’’ But it doesn’t stop there. After the long dedicated summer, they spend their time practicing nearly every day after school, using spare time to prepare for pep rallies and games, and toughing it out through all kinds of weather. But they have surpassed the hardships and all agree that it was worth every bit of it when they won runner-up for the squad of ex cellence and many other individual awards at summer camp. Of course their benefits come in other forms also, one of which in- cludes getting to know each other and many other of the students much better. Most of them agree that cheerleading has definitely made them more outgoing. They have had the opportunity to ac- complish and that has given them personal satisfaction and as Brian Todd says, “We have had a lot of fun with it.” So the Hawk Cheerleaders have worked very hard to gain a positive response for the players from the crowd, to enthuse the students, to have a little bit of fun. and to get a little bit of notoriety for what they do best. To these cheerleaders it is all worth it when the Hawks show their might and do what they do best. Says Holly Farnsworth, You feel like you have actually participated when they are victorious.” So this page is dedicated to you, the 1984-85 Hawk Cheerleaders, for all your hard work, time and dedication to all the Varsity Hawk teams. 10 SENIORS OF ’85 “Thank God I made it!” A quote that could be taken from most any Senior. As many new rules were put into effect and lots of school functions, such as the “talent show” and “fun day,” were cut from this school year’s agenda, the Seniors managed to make it through their last year of high school. But how do you describe the word gradua- tion from a senior’s point of view? To many, it means starting their occupation or continuing an education; to others it means starting out in a new world with new responsibilities. Many will go on without the best friends they have had by their sides for more than 4 years. Others will stay and start a family. But whatever they do, the Seniors of 1985, and even the underclassmen, will have the memories of their years here at Iowa Park High. Through the highs and the lows, these years have the Best of the Best. 13 Smile, You’re on Candid Camera le havens dumb 17 Scaring with Distinction 18 Preskient-Sergio Arrendondo. Harold Cowley moved to Iowa Park in 1964 to fulfill what he called an ideal Ad- ministrative position.” He goes on to say that being the Superintendent of the Iowa Park School district is a challenge. One in which he has met with success. According to Mr Cowley, Iowa Park can be proud of its high academic achievements and overall student participation. It is proven with its high quality teachers, above average students, and the community support. Because of the new strict regulations brought upon by the State of Texas. Mr. Cowley says he is not able to install many new extra-curricular programs that he would like. When Harold Cowley isn’t behind his desk or at the schools, he likes to take advantage of the holidays and weekends, by hunting, skiing, or back-packing with his son, James. Also, among his hobbies is yard work. But his favorite form of R and R is his small ranch in Cimmaron. New Mexico. Assistant Super- intendent Robert Palmer A recent addition to the Iowa Park school system is Mr. Robert Palmer, the new Assistant Superintendent. He is not new to the teaching system however. Being a teacher at Electra High School for nine years and the Jr. High prin- cipal for six years, he has the experience needed in order to handle young students. Among his responsibilities for the job, he is in charge of curriculum, buses, and most of all making sure that House Bill 72 is followed. When asked about the change from Electra to Iowa Park Mr Palmer says. The kids have a winning attitude. They know what they can achieve and set after it.” Like Mr. Cowley, Mr. Palmer shares a passion for hun- ting and yard work. Among his achievements are winning first place in a Wichita Falls Gardeners Show and many other ribbons. He also likes to play golf, but admits that is another story. Faculty 61 To be a lizard. They won the first half of district, but came in second in the second-half of district play. The Hawks then played Decatur, who won the second half of district, a third time to see who would be the district champ. The game was played in the Old High gym in Wichita Falls. The game finished in a tie at the end of regulation. Overtime play began and Iowa Park was vic- torious in the end with score 64-60. The Fans chanted “Iowa Park Hawks are 1 and don’t you forget it! The Bi-district game was played at Hirschi before a packed house. The Hawks built a 12 point lead over the Graham Steers but the Steers made a furious comeback in the fourth quarter. The Hawk players made some impor- tant free throws and held on to win by a score of 45-41. The Lampasas Eagles were the Hawks’ next victim on the way to the Regional play-offs in Lubbock. The game took place on February 26, in Mineral Wells High School gym. The score see-sawed back and forth throughout the game with no point span greater than 5 points. The Hawks defeated the Eagles 51-50 in the last few seconds of the game. The regional tournament at Texas Tech in Lubbock in- cluded four teams from around the State of Texas. The Hawks were paired with the Seminole Indians in the first round of tournament play. The game was a close one dur- ing the first half. As the second half began, the Hawks began to fade. The Seminole Indians, with a season record of 28-2, went on to win the tournament and represent their school in the State Tournament in Austin. Thanks, Hawks, for an exciting season and for represen- ting us so well this year! Congratulations on a great season! 108 Basketball LADY HAWKS OPPONENT 43 Bowie 51 53 Bridgeport 56 41 Decatur 46 38 Vernon 63 68 Springtown 53 50 Bowie 45 52 Bridgeport 48 53 Decatur 47 45 Vernon 57 40 Springtown 43 The Lady Hawks began the 1984-85 season with high expectations. Playing in a very tough district with teams like Vernon and Bowie, both being ranked high in the state, the Lady Hawks finished the season third in the District 5-3A race. Coach Sefcik had a heart attack just before District play and was unable to coach for the rest of the season. He was temporari- ly replaced by Coach Beckham, who did an outstanding job filling his position. The Lady Hawks started out slow by los- ing their first four District games, but came back in the second half being nearly unbeatable. The Lady Hawks narrowly missed the playoffs by losing their last District game to Springtown, who for some reason seems to have a way of knocking Hawk teams out of the playoffs. They help pass time, they make us laugh when we are in those helpless moods, and they fill us in on the latest news. There is nothing we wouldn’t do for most true friends. They have given us the joy of memories with the attitudes surface and the smile that makes us forget our problems. This is the kind of feeling that editors Karin Fedo and Becky Roberts have tried to capture in the 1985 Hawk Annual. This has been a year of challenges and confusion but one that has been met by all those enthusiastic students at Iowa Park High.
