MR. DARRELL DICK A FRIEND TO ALL Mr. Darrell Dick is a man who is interested in students as individuals, not just as faces in a group. He is devoted to his teaching, his friends, and his family. In recognition of these outstanding qualities, the 1974 HAWK is dedicated to Mr. Dick. Since becoming high school choir director here six years ago, Mr. Dick has enlarged the choral department to include the Acappella Choir, Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs, Mixed Choir, Tempos, Music Theory, and Men's Quartet. Mr. Dick con- sistently produces award-winning choirs. He has a personality that encourages his students to put forth their best efforts. Mr. Dick has helped to develop many soloists and several students have received scholarships as a result of the training with Mr. Dick. Because of Mr. Dick’s leadership and con- genial manner, the choral department, especially the Acap- pella Choir, is an organization known for unity and love for fellow members. The first two years of Mr. Dick's eight years of teaching in Iowa Park were as a junior high history teacher. He has also taught high school history for six years. Before coming to Iowa Park, Mr. Dick had taught junior high history at Cro- well , Texas and established the first choir there. Mr. Dick's wife, Ann, is a science teacher at Iowa Park Jun- ior High, and they have two daughters, Lori and Traci. PERSONAL GLIMPSES The 1973-74 school year began on August 27 as Mr. Dawson explained school regulations in the opening assembly. From that moment on, IPHS was in continu- ous motion. Throughout the year, things happened that meant something special to you even if no one else noticed. The events in the HAWK 74 were personal glimpses at IPHS because it was your annual, your school, and your year. 6 WHEN THE LEAVES BEGAN TO FALL Extra practices for football games and studying for tests were a necessary part of the beginning school year. Southern School Assemblies provided a change in the daily routine. Couples talked at their lockers and the entire student body became involved in extra curricular activities. Teachers worked hard in their classrooms or relaxed in the lounge during their conference periods. Individual mug shots were taken so that you would be a part of the HAWK 74. 11 VcWmV . THEN WINTER WINDS CAME 14 Basketball season opened, and after all the pre-Christ- mas festivities were completed, the long awaited holi- days arrived. Semester exams were taken and one half of your year was gone. To conserve energy, the speed limit was reduced to 55 mph, students had to come to school in the dark because of daylight savings time, and school thermostats were turned down to 68 degrees. Mr. Dawson decided that the lockers were getting too full of trash, so all the students were called out of class to rearrange their lockers to make room for their books. 15 o 18 19 WHEN SPRING WAS IN THE AIR General Motors sponsored an assembly to stress the energy crisis. Jack Stevens made his annual visit to the American history classes, and he talked about his life as rancher and western artist. Track season opened, and as the weather became warmer, motor- cycles were seen more often. Banquets were held, and the band variety show provided entertainment for everyone. On April 11, a successful Hillbilly Day was another way to make your year even more spe- cial. 20 21 W47t- 24 25 DO NOT BE ANGRY OVER THE PAST NOR WASTE TIME IN FEAR OF THE FUTURE BUT LOOK AROUND IN AWARENESS OF THE PRESENT HOUR. As your school year rushed to a close, band instruments were turned in. The Annual Awards Assembly was held and the 74 Hawk was dedicated to Mr. Dick. The 1974 Hawk baseball team came through with our only District 4-AAA championship. Annual staff apprentices assisted with varied tasks during the year. Baccalaureate inspired seniors to set goals for themselves, and the school seemed especially vacant because of test exemptions. Even if you were not a senior, gradua- tion provided a memorable cli- max for your school year. 28 29 SHERRY ANDERSON HORACIO ARREDONDO ROYCE ATCHLEY Senior class officers were: David Collins, President; Carlett Kyle, Vice-President; Gisele Farmer, Secretary; and Sherry Anderson, Treasurer.
