HAWK 1973 Iowa Park High School Iowa Park, Texas Volume XXVI Our Principal. . . Mr. Bob Dawson We are fortunate to have a dedicated man such as Mr. Dawson as our principal. He is a man of high integrity and maintains an open-door policy. Mr. Dawson well deserves the dedication of the 1973 HAWK. Mr. Dawson enjoys being around people, especially young people. He has been junior high principal and science teacher, high school biology teacher and football coach, and is now serving his eighth year as high school principal. He is not the type of person who casually sits behind his desk giving orders - Mr. Dawson is involved in the activities of the school. He can be seen at all extra-curricular events, and he is con- stantly aware of the problems that must be answered to allow the school to operate efficiently. We dedicate the 1973 HAWK to Mr. Dawson to express the appreci- ation of the student body and faculty for his patience and understanding in everything he does. 4 Table Of Contents Opening Section 4 Seniors 22 Student Life 38 Organizations 58 Athletics 84 Academics 120 Honors 140 Underclassmen 162 Advertisements 182 We all dream of great deeds and high positions, away form the unimportance of ordinary life. Cosmetology initiates suffer the indignities of their superiors, and Mr. Dawson resu- mes the taming of his crew. 40 The routines resume 41 October Moods Along with the cool fall air, October ushers in the Brownwood football game. Sock day raises our spirits which are recorded by the TFA film crew from New York. The FHA holds their installation of officers, mug shots are taken, and the ornamental horticulture classes delve deep into the mysteries of the propagation bed. 42 Involvements deepen Thoughts of Novem- ber include the novel play presented by the speech department, a hat day and poster con-' test to boost our spirits for the Hirschi game, and the rush to finish home ec. projects. c, THM5 for PLENTY of VICTORIES,w ve want one more Victor V 44 45 The choir and band Christmas concerts in December provide en- tertainment for all. The newly formed chess club gives its mem - bers complicated problems to pon- der, while the juniors and the fresh- men concentrate all their efforts on the IT ED tests. IPHS bids fare- well to Mrs. Savant with class parties. 47 A wide diversion of activities speeds January on its way. Our basketball team becomes serious contenders for the district title, urged on by members of the stage band. Jack Stevens guest lectures Mr. Lyles' American History classes, giving an insight into the Old West and cowboy art. Mr . Kings's government class and Mr. Lyles’ world affairs class visit court, sampling the new experience of a trial. Mr. Miller returns the results of the ITED tests to the juniors and freshmen. Semester tests occupy days and nights of study, often not producing the desired result. Our flags fly at half mast in tribute to the late presidents Truman and Johnson. 48 The familiar role 50 February is a month of varied activities. The cold weather and snow offers John Sykes a great opportunity to end a great friend- ship with Randy Alsup. The OEA holds open house to display their office skills, and the sophomores are submitted to a battery of vocational interest tests. The National Thespian Society holds their initiation, and the tomato plants begin to produce their first fruit. The National March of Dimes prepares for their annual 20 -mile walkathon. 51 March extravaganzas 52 Different types of excitement prevail throughout March. The weather becomes a serious subject for conversation, and the basement becomes a storm cellar. The future auto body shop assumes the skeleton of a building. David Laurence succumbs to the soothing tones of a lullabye during a Southern School Assembly. Snakes become the center of attention, while the science fair explores all facets of experimentation. One of the many UIL entrants is the one-act play. 53 Ed Howard, a senior, takes things calmly, while Jack Gilmore ponders over his schedule for next year. The FHA banquet honors members and guests. The one-act play cast performs for the school, winning much praise, and Jeff Paine contemplates a slide rule problem. Hillbilly day proves to be a huge success and a pleasant way to spend a day in April. 54 56 Realization of a dream During May, the school is in a whirlwind of activities in anticipation of that final day. The annual awards assembly is held, and the seniors journey to Six Flags. Spanish Monoply is an in- teresting way to learn and a quick way to pass the hour. Without Mr. Paul Woods, our representative from Taylor Publishing Company, the task of putting the annual together would have been much harder. Our deepest gratitude goes to our sponsor, Mrs. Raydean Mattis, and our principal, Mr. Bob Dawson, who have helped to make the 1973 HAWK a reality. The Editors, 1)U Jti-flL Memory of Mr. William Nunn, Teacher Miss Patty Pressler, Student The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley Of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; For Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, They comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house Of the Lord forever.
