flies U ie 1965 J£za £ Ii)). C5 Seorge 3£g£ Sc£oof 5owa CPar dexas The high school years are the most important years of a person’s life. In this short, fast moving segment of life one finds new friends and makes new enemies. For most, they receive their first taste of love. One learns to laugh as well as cry while experiencing love and hate. But most of all he learns to live with the people around him and make the best he can of life. We, the 1964-65 HAWK staff, have tried to record the life of W. F. George High School as lived by the students of the past year. The HAWK Staff Dedication It is a rare occasion that young men have the opportunity to associate and to work with a man of the caliber of Coach Tommy Watkins. Coach Watkins, a fine gentleman on the field, in the class- room, and in his community has set an example for each of us at W. F. George High School to fol- low. He is responsible for the Iowa Park Hawks’ first district championship in football in the history of our school. But Coach Watkins has left something more than a district and bi-district trophy at W. F. George High. He has brought to our school a win- ning and fighting spirit that can produce winning teams in the future. Coach Watkins has changed the lives of the boys who were privileged enough to play under him and has changed our school into a champion. A hundred dedications could not express the admiration and respect that we all have for this man, but we are honored to dedicate the 1965 Hawk” to Coach Tommy Watkins. 9K 9 DC 9 S 9 CR 91 9 9 0 DC Superintendent: KEITH D. The high-flying Hawk thinclads easily swept the District 2AA cham- pionship for the seventh straight year and went on to Lubbock to up- set a strong field and claim the Regional championship for the third time in school track history. Roy Don Stewart (2nd place in state 440 dash), Terry May (3rd place in state discus), and Danny Tarbet (5th place in state high hurdles), and Larry Thompson (2nd place in state high hurdles) brought home third place honors for the Hawks in the Class A A State Meet held at Austin, May 8. Hurdlers DANNY TARBET and LARRY THOMPSON break from the starting line side by side, towards another one-two finish which seemed to be a weekly occurance. The Hawk pair swept Regional together and at the State Meet Thompson took second and Tarbet fifth, as Cotton sped to a school record of 14.4. BARRY JACKSON sprints from the blocks to start the mile relay team which placed second in District 2AA. JAKE SCHMIDT finishes ahead of the pack to take home another gold medal in 880 yd. dash. The fleet Hawk middle distance man set a blistering pace in his spe- cialty to put a 1:58.0 in the school record books. E. F. IRBY gives ROY DON STEWART the baton far ahead of the pack in the mile relay. Irby, a senior, turned in several fine performances before a leg injury placed him on the sidelines for the last part of the season. His ab- sence was greatly felt on the mile relay team afterwards. Sprinters GREGG WEBB and PHILLIP GREEN Hawk milers for 1965 were: MIKE MILLER, JOHN SCHMIDT, BILL SEARLE, and JIMMY SKINNER. Miller placed fifth in district and Skinner brought home third place. Not pictured is TERRY MAY who won first in dis- trict, second in regional and third in the State Meet in the discus. May wrote his name into the school record books with an outstanding toss of 165ft. 7in., to bring home the bronze medal from Austin. Junior pole vaulter, DENNIS HILL took first place in district and fifth in regional. Weightman ROBERT DAWSON lets the discus fly, the event in which he placed second in district and fourth in regional. ROY DON STEWART breaks the tape for another first place in the 440 yd. dash. Roy was state runner-up in that event and wrote his name into the school re- cord books with a swift 50.0 off the blocks in Austin. Throughout the season LARRY THOMPSON set school records like they weren’t even there. At left Cotton flies through the air in the broad jump, an event in which he missed the school record by only an inch. His best effort in the broad jump was 22ft. lOin. In the middle Cotton finishes the high hurdles all alone for another record of 14.4. The right hand picture shows Thompson easily clearing the bar in the pole vault, an event in which he set a new school stand- ard of 12ft. Robert Owens SECRETARY Donna Hill TREASURER Pam Stephenson Mickey Smith Marvin Robertson Dwight Berry Teddy Ralston After many years have passed there will be just as many different stories about what happened during the 1964-65 school year. We will try to depict what happened. although it may be contrary to many stories, but. . . Uc Cto. But no matter what, when the bell rang it was just one big happy family. Thus we shall be- gin our story. It all started with football, which meant pep ral- lies with our cheer- leaders building up the spirit and urging the team on to another victory. GD MISHTY HAWKS Of course, some of the boys got carried away and couldn't wait until after the game to try out their new dance steps. Sometimes it was lonesome, or isolation with a teacher. Not only were their megaphones in a mess, but the cheerleaders were a riot. If you don't believe us, just ask anyone that was at the games. This is the way each game began with our captains, Cot- ton and Dirt Dawson, leading our team on to another vic- torious conquest of the gridiron. And this is the way our string of eleven victories ended with our bi-dis- trict win over Phillips. In the dressing room after the game Albert May shows our bi-district championship trophy to the team. Our cheerleaders were so amazed by the Hawks dazzling play that they stumbled around aimlessly until long after the game was over. Loverboy Keith was so over- come by the action of the cheer- leaders that he showed this feeling of roughness and toughness. When the cheerleaders saw these expressions and those of the other boys, they jumped for joy in their wild madness. The cheerleaders caused such a commotion at the Homecoming bonfire that they generated enough spirit to cause these boys to give their all during the game and came up with these ex- pression of emotions. Gorden showed his proudness and his confidence in himself and his team. Some of the highlights of the Homecoming activities have been mentioned, but the climax came about in the gym- nasium when Larry George, Student Council President, crowned Mabel Clapp as the Homecoming Queen. Although it was raining and muddy at the game that night she waded through the muck and reigned over all of the activities of the day. Our basketball team didn't fare very well during the sea- son. After a slow start they finally showed that they could play championship type basketball by their fine last two games. This is the way each game began with Terry May jumping against the opposition. No, they aren't having spastic fits. This is just the band members reaction about their getting a first division rating at the UIL Marching Contest at Mid- western University. These girls are working on the Christmas decorations on their Home Room door. Because of these decorations on all of the doors, the school looked very beautiful. Although our boys team didn’t do so well during the basketball season, our girls came out with the district championship trophy in their possession. Coach Mouser is encour- aging the girls to play their best while Diane is saying, Oh, Coachie what kind of after shave lotion do you use. ” This is what Jackie said when he was accused of cheating. He went on to say that we had just scared him and that was the reason that he acted in such an odd manner. He also said that we were just a.bunch of rat finks for scaring him so much. During half time Coach Shelton is giving the boys a talk on what to do during the next half. While Dennis is trying to point out what the other team is doing, Cotton says to Terry, Say, do I have beans in my ear. When the All-District football se- lections were announced D. L. Tarbet and Bear Waters were chosen Honor- able Mention. If you think it takes intelligence to play football, you will be shown different in this picture. As deadlines come nearer, the annual staff try to pool their ideas so to make a good annual. If you think this is confusion, you're right! Confusion, as usual, reigns in chemistry class; but since this is experiment day, it means double trouble. What a day it was when the hypnotist came to town. Here Terry May, Mike Skinner, and Amos Ross are making faces at the audience because the hypnotist told them to do it. These are some of the things that happened when the Pleasant Valley Health Club took over the Lions Club's Follies. Diane is leading the gang back from a hike on the Gym Leaders' picnic. This is what happened the day that Ben brought his bug to school. The Automotive Technology Build ing was just added to our campus this year and it has helped the boys that want to go into this field of business. This is just one of the tender moments that happen during Biology class. It looks as if Sue and Frances are enjoying themselves. Why does Mr. Jeter have the sur- prised look on his face? It's because Don got the right answer. Hie! These two characters are our coaches. The man fondly known as Little Hitler is here presiding over the German Club Party. It looks as if Gismo got a little high at the Gym Leaders initiation. We would like to know what goes on at these meetings. ”P” Green shows that he is a jack of all trades but a master of none. This is what our track team looks like late at night after they have returned from another vic- torious trip. After he and Judy Crumpton were chosen Mr. and Miss Howdy and were crowned at the Western Day assembly, Robert Dawson left to go to Austin where he won the boys' State Extemporaneous Speak- ing award. Mike Lester and Gary Cribbs became very proficient in their trampoline acts. The candidates for Student Council offices gave their cam- paign speeches during an assembly. The Speech II classes did some plays during the Western Day assembly. Nancy got carried away with the animals at Six Flags. My ribbon's better than your ribbon... With the end of the school year came the Who's Who awards and, of course, the pride of earning them. Seniors willed Don a muffler --hope it works! The U. I. L. boys went to State to compete (?).
