1E IORS The Class of 1974 arrived August 29, 1971 with enthusiasm and high expectations. At that time we all knew that nurses were of high morale character, as pure as the color of their uniforms and thoroughly dedicated to the welfare of their patients. In short, we, as most, placed the nurse high on a pedestal. We were thrilled with the expectations of embarking on a new career, meeting new friends, and meeting lots of guys while attending that big University, Drake. After a time, however, we realized that we were actually attending an all girl school, that arriving at Drake in Yellow cabs was definitely not in , and that our beautiful profession wasn't as glamorous as we had thought, especially when carrying bedpans and cleaning up accidents . At the end of the first nine months of hard labor, we received our first stripe. We were no longer those naive freshmen at the bottom of the totem pole. We were Juniors! However, much to our dismay we realized we had only moved a few inches up from the bottom. To the administration and some instruc- tors we were student nurses first and then individuals. There were always our saviors though, our ever loving patients to whom we were angels and could do no wrong. During our Junior year, because of our outspokeness and determination to change certain aspects of our education, our class acquired certain descriptive names from the administration, which of course, can't be printed here. The year was filled with new learning experiences, longer hours on the floor, and study to which there seemed no end. In March of '73 we began Senior Specialties which represented one of the last milestones in our education. Each of the 3 month rotations fSurgery, O.B., Psych, and Pedsi helped us grow in new direct- ions. It was perhaps during this time we began looking at ourselves and our profession in a different light. We became more realistic and more mature in our actions and our ideals. It was a long 33 months, but during that time we were able to learn and experience things which many our age have not and possibly will never experience. As individuals we have grown in many di- rections. As students we have seen the miracle of birth, the struggle and anguish of a patient attempting to walk again. We have seen those who pray to God they could die and those who pray they won't. In short, we have seen and experienced with patients all facets of human suffering, and have shared with them the joys which come from conquering the diseases and disabilities which afflict them. .
