Class History September 10, 1962: In the beginning we were Freshmeng children of fortune, venturing into the unknown world of the student nurse. We were plagued by strong- smelling cat cadavers, loud roommates, not enough mail, late hours and those super- ior seniors. We never could remember names, and oft times found ourselves forget- ting on which floor we lived. Confusion reigned supreme as we struggled to adapt ourselves to a new environment, lacking parental supervision, but obviously guarded by House Rules. We began work on the hospital wards dressed primly in white smocks and dark skirts, lacking the glamour and sophistication we all awarded student nurses. Soon, we could wear our whites and stripes , and on March 22, 1963, we topped our uni- form with a starched, crisply folded cap. This proud moment of accomplishment was immediately followed by our first injection, Microbiology, and Drake finals. We all learned that coffee really does keep one awake, and that two weeks is just not enough time for vacation. Returning to the wards to begin medical-surgical nursing brought us a new vocab- ulary, incident reports, gripe sessions, and most of all, tired feet . September 7, 1963, brought us added responsibility and achievement as we were awarded our Junior stripes. These stripes did more for the spirit than the thought that specialties were coming up in February. The Junior-Senior banquet was a booming success, sporting an excellent dinner and a surprised social director. Specialties marked halfway in our education, and we began O. B. , Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery with enthusiasm and fervor. Our Senior stripes, received September 18, 1964, gave us a little of that super- iority seniors seem to be noted for, and the end of specialties brought our return to the medical-surgical areas to polish up our techniques. With only six months of school remaining, we began to look forward to post- graduate plans: marriage for some, budgets, insurance policies and how to possibly allow enough money for a savings account. At the end, there was graduation. We smiled through tears as we received our diplomas, signaling a new life, and we said goodbye to friends and three wonderful years. Now we are Graduate Nurses--- A new black band on your cap, A brand new, snow-white uniform. As you walk that lonesome hall, You 're on your own!
