Psalms l19gl05. The paradox of an enlightened civilization living in darkness is a grim reality. As man has gained advantages over time and space through his scientific achieve- ments, there has not been the corresponding progress in the spiritual realm but rather a continued groping in darkness. With the graduating class of '49 goes my prayer that as you leave our halls there will be no periods of darkness as you pursue 1ife's pathway. You will find the path winding and strewn with obstacles, but as His word has become precious to you it will cast the necessary light to enable you to negotiate life's course success- fully. One aim of our school is to enrich the heritage of our students. To remember your Creator in your youth and then to offer a life of service to God and the Church would be a realization of our fondest hopes for you as graduates. 'l'herefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abound- ing in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye knowi that your labor is not in vain in the Lord, I Corinthians 15:58. Though we've sornetimes almost envied Trula of the grades on her report card we're sure she is very deserving. She served on the Student Chapel Comrnittee first semester. I ARLEEN EASH Another interesting personality on our cam- pus is Arleen. Her outlook on life is quite op- timistic and her vocation unpredictable, She has served on the Reflector Staff both as a re- porter and editor,Aserved on literary commit- tees and as leader of Student Prayer Meeting. KEITH ERB lt seems almost out-of-the-way to intro- duce Keith, because everybody knows him. He is an exceptional conversationalist and enjoys laughing. When he finishes his schooling, he intends to settle down in home life and be a real farmer. HAZEL FERREIRA I-lazel's studious manner and willingness to work have made her a worthwhile student at l.M.S. She has an observing eye and enjoys many of the finer things in life. He is friendly to everyone and always manages a bright remark. His ex- tra-curricular activities through the three years he has been at I.M.S. have leaned toward ath- letics. He is another future farmer. MARGARET MILLER Margaret has been with us only one year and we have found her to be a quiet and reserved girl. She is studious and enjoys reading as a pastime. As a member of Service Club and a Reflector typist, her contribution has been of value. NEDRA MILLER Nedra is an energetic, ambitious, person who can enjoy almost any sport. She likes good books so spends much of her leisure tixne read- ing. Her station wagon has been a solution to some of our transportation difficulties. To be a school teacher is her ambition for the future. RUSSELL MILLER The quiet courtesy of Russell is an admir- able tratt. It is good to see how he takes a joke and also how considerate he is. He is a typical farm boy and plans to do farming after gradu- ation. He has served as the Reflector business xnanager the past year. FERN SWARTZENDRUBER Fern has done her share in using her orig- inal ideas in helping to produce some of our student chapel programs. She also has a big part in our music activities. LUKE YODER lf you want a man to help you, call on Luke. He is a good sport and when it comes to music is a dependable tenor. Physics seemed to be quite enjoyable for him, probably because of his interest in science. His photographic in- terests have been a definite asset to our school. ROSALYN M. It is a precious treasure when one has a carefully trained voice for singing. But if one will but sing, the heart of the singer with the song, will give a resonance of expression that is beautifully worth-while. Our Mixed Chorus this year had thirty-six members. Among our most in- teresting activities was our visit to Radio Station WSUI in Iowa City. There we furnished some music during the Morning Chapel . We undertook this activity as a real opportunity to honor and glorify God, and to lead others into this spirit through our message. One of our favorite pieces of work was our Christmas Cantata, The Music Of Bethlehem by Holton, which we rendered at the East Union Church on the even- ing of December Zl. Our Chorus met to practice on Tuesday and Thursday of every week, Every hour we spent in this way was certainly a blessing to each member. fharus The nineteen voices of our Ladies' Chorus have spent one period of each week in singing for our own enjoyment and also in preparing for special programs. We have found that music well expresses our praise to our Creator, so we strive to convey these expressions in song. One special benefit which we have received by being members of Ladies' Chorus is learning to become inspired with the words and music of our songs, Under the efficient direction of Miss Duerksen, we have been able to put emphasis on expressive singing. As in the world of nature and in the world of thought, we find the beautiful, the gra nd, and sublime, so he re we find it possible to have the added charms of sweet- ness and inspiration with that of the beautiful and grand and sublime in the realm of sound 26 Mme. l 1 F MIXED CHORUS Front Row, left to right: Martha Duerksen, Director, Lillian Yoder, Marilyn L.. God has furnished the armor with which the Christian can withstand the darts of the wicked one, - Truth is the best way of fighting error. It is time now to begin to develop the technique of concentration because life grows more complex. CHAPEL GUEST SPEAKERS Spiritual Life Week QOctober Z5-291 was a period of spiritual refreshment from which many benefits were gained. Brother Wilbur Yoder from Middlebury, Indiana served as speaker. Appreciation of his efforts is shown by these testimon- ies gathered from students. Spiritual Emphasis Week has led me to closer walk with my Savior, and rededication of my all to Christ who has done so much for me. I was surely grateful to listen to Brother Yoder this week. Life has a dif- ferent meaning to me than it has had before. I think we were all helped spiritually because of his stay with us. Brother Yoder's presence was a source of encouragement to me. His work among us has helped me to find that the re truly is a 'joy unspeakable and full of glory' in serving the Lord. This week brought me to realize more fully that truly 'Jesus is the .Toy of Living' and that living without being ag His, life was useless. To me Spiritual Life Week has been a awakening of my spiritual condition, and a struggle to gain victory over sin. I believe it was a challenge to all of us, at least it was to me, to have Brother Yoder with us for he gave us very inspiring messages. Come again, Brother Yoder. During the first year the literary society though one was probably quite weak, but by the fourth year it has grown strong enough to divide. This process of division was accomplished by each student drawing a slip of paper which had an odd or an even number on it. Accordingly, the societies were known as the Odds and Evens until the task of reorganization and the selection of a permanent name was made. The Evens chose the name Alethean which is derived from the Greek for truth. The Odds became En Avanians from the French for onward, forward. Though competition has added new life to our literary work we realize that each may borrow from the other and go forward in the quest for truth. Money was earned by the members of each club by selling greeting cards, the pro- fits going to the club to which they belonged. Two new clubs have been added-- the Campus and Christian Service Clubs. By the large membership of both it was evident many we re inte rested. The purpose of the Service Club was to be of service to anyone who needed help. They found the re was plenty to do. Wood was carried, a Thanksgiving din- ner was prepared for a poor family, Christmas dolls were made for the colored childred in Chicago, a scrapbook was made for a sick girl, and similar projects. Although this club was de signed to enrich the lives of others the members found they received a real blessing themselves. The Needlecraft Club was so small that they united with the Service Club. Sister Brenneman and Sister Duerksen spon- sored the combined club. The ambitious Campus Club members under the enthusiastic leadership of Brother Horst, planned a beautiful landscape for the campus. Their spring pro- ject, which was continued by Brother Guengerich, was the planting of shrubs and trees. Undesirable objects were removed and the general appearance inside and outside the building improved. The Star Club, although the smallest, was by no means the least interesting. After it was begun its membership was almost doubled. Occasionally they had star gazes, under the direction of Brother Nafziger, who also gave lectures on points of special interest. Everyone in the Camera Club was required to have a camera. Sister Sho- walter gave informational and instructional talks on the technique of taking good pictures. Illustrated lectures from the Eastman Kodak Company were an impor- tant feature. A beginning in developing pictures was made. To comprehend the greatness of our God it is necessary to appreciate His marvelous works of creation. The Nature Club aided in doing this. They spent much time hiking and studying flowers and birds. With a microscope, several pairs of binoculars, and Sister Detweiler as director, the enthusiastic group was able to learn many new things they had not observed before. They also made the class rooms more cheerful by bringing potted flowers. As students, we greatly appreciated the opportunity of deepening our interests in the fields we most enjoyed, as well as the provided relaxation from our studies. 37 STAR CLUB Sponsor: Samuel Nafziger Donna Marie Brenneman Milford Brenneman Virginia Ann Brenneman Cletus Miller Ellis Roth Leroy Schrock Willard Schweitzer CAMPUS CLUB Sponsor: Paul T. Nothing alone, yet something in Him, All self-gain is counted as dross Counted as nought--only loss, We are nothing, but only in Him. All of our joys and our personal gains, The friends that we make and the homes that we build Will vanish and pass as the mist of the morn When all to our pleasure they ever are willed. So live in His will and work for His joy, And even a smile or a word that you give Will bestow you a blessing of contentnient and peace And help someone else more fully to live. Dear Lordg Open each vision, grant passiong A passion to do and to say The words and the deeds that help others, Oh, cast all our self-will away, Fill us with love so boundless and deep, Love as full as the sky is of sta rs, Make our greeds and our hurts to be lost in To do only thy willy never ours.
