And how nursing had entered my mind. And I thought of the caps and the treatment trays, And the letters R. N. I would sign. I thought of the uniforms white as can be, And the pin with the letters engraved. Yet, how could I know, or how could I see That nursing's a road that you paved. It isn't your name, it isn't your looks Or your voice, or your hair or your eyesg It isn't just marks, or it isn't just books, Or the early hours you rise. It's the smile that a patient has when you're done, It's the Thank you he gives for his life. It's the cry of the newborn as he becomes one Of the-great new world and its strife. It's the mother whose family awaits her return Or the father who's too young to die. It's the 'big' and the 'little' things that you learn It's the many times you ask 'why'?'. It isn't the cap but the head underneath That makes the nurse what she is. It's not the black band or the high honored seat. It's the heart that she gives with all this. - J. A day which was an experience in itself, yet only the beginning ofa new world of experiences. Our first night was spent asking ourselves, What am l doing here'? Everybody was missed by someone. Linda M, 's dog howled for three nights after she left home. In our second week at I, L, H, we made the first of many long hikes to Grandview - 1. 7 miles to be exact. It didn't take long to realize that there were easier ways to get there than walking. Hitchhiking was developed into a fine art by Alsie W. , Darlene S., Barb Y., Norma M., and Ronda W. Initia- tion week found half of the class on their knees in the middle of East Ninth praising the juniors. We spent a lot of time with our smelly cats, and most of us became pretty familiar with the little beasts, that is with the exception of Connee H., who even in the final exam, couldn't tell the hims from the hers. Many hours were spent in the nursing laboratory practicing procedures for that big day when we could spend two whole hours with the patients. We finally got our uniforms, but even in her extra small, we almost lost Sharon S. Marsha A. will never forget her first patient or her first day at work. Did he think you were a little tired, Marsha? Each group of pre-testers did a lot for our morale. We finally found someone who knew less about the hospital than we did. Coleen L. became very proficient at bluffing her way through guided tours. Delores J. and Jo N. brought down the house at the Valentine party with their interpretation of young love, and Donna K. taught us the finer points of romance as Juliet, but from the looks of their left hands, the real experts were Sally F. , Joyce H., and Susan M. On the iciest day of the winter, February 19, 1961, First Lutheran Church was the scene of our capping ceremony. Even though the weather proved unfavorable, this day was one of the most inspirational and memorable days in our student life. For a time, certain members of our class seemed accident prone. A stray radiator cost Pat C. four stitches, and somehow Marilyn's arm went through the window in her door. Newspaper coverage was given to Judy V. as Iowa Dairy Princess, and to Jackie H. for her fifty dollar kiss. Although it didn't make the headlines, another big event occurred when Ginny D. became the first member of our class to turn twenty-one. That party will long be remem- bered. fifuf- . ' Everybody has their own way of acquiring those twenty-four demerits. If Rita P could just help Karen C. remember to sign out, perhaps Karen could hel Rita remember to record her weight each ITIOHIU- p ,- ' ' ht hour days from two hour weeks, we re- Along mth the increase to eig ceived the title of Freshmen. This lasted for three months at which time we became Juniors. Our junior year included care studies, classroom lectures by doctors along with their helpful hints clinically. The social highlight for this year again included bad weather. The theme of Sayonara was used for our banquet at the Holiday Inn followed by a dance in our new auditorium. After nine months of general medical-surgical experience we anxiously ....-.... started our year of departments. Florence D. seemed to be Dr. Hayne's special scrub nurse for 3:00 a. m craniotomies. Surgery also included simpler procedures. Linda D. , did you ever learn to test gloves? It does take talent. Karen F. and Lorraine B. also found it difficult to return from lunch on time. While in Pediatrics Vicki W. seemed susceptible to a certain disorder common to that department. This kept Vicki away from work, but Linda G. was isolated in the formula room for long periods of time. Special formulas seemed to be the fad. Clean R. found that autoclaving was the best way to destroy germs, but it doesn't do anything very glamorizing for plastic horses.J Carol H. had Dr. Nord falling for her in Obstetrics. You wouldn't get soap on the floor if you scrubbed over the scrub sink, Carol. Sandy I. be- came accustomed to deliveries in the middle of the night. This seemed the only way for her to acquire her scrubs. Care study deadlines proved to be a problem in departments too. Donna W. had two whole minutes to spare before her deadline. Each of us will carry individual memories of Knoxville through the years. With ourselves as the only tool with which to work, we all gained a new and lasting prospective, Planning and anticipation seemed to be the key words of our senior year. Through our many activities and responsibilities, we were ably led by our senior class president, Sherry C, As the end of these three years draws near, we realize that we will 'W'-'Cf f0YQCl, DOI be able to say good-bye to the experiences that will forever be a part of each of our lives. l 1 l l 1 merits.
