. Easy Answers 0 Tough. . . Mr. James Power, the counselor and a former English teacher at Iowa High School, has helped an uncountable number of students with their problems, from giving advice and seeing them through hard times, to guiding themlon the road to a higher education by aiding them in selecting careers and colleges for their futures. Originally from Kinder, LA, he has a bachelor's degree and master's in education, both from McNeese. He has spent eight of his ten years in the field of education at Iowa High school, four as an English teacher and four as a counselor. He says that his biggest challenge as a counselor is helping students with their serious problems. They come into my office looking for an easy answer - it's tough. He is also very pressed for time. He says that if he had all day to counsel, things would be a lot better, but he is overloaded with paperwork. Another difficult part of his job is handing out scholarships for seniors. It's a big and often unappreciated sacrifice since he is not required to do it. It is hard because he can't get any cooperation from the students. They just wait for things to fall in their laps and don't bother to fill the applications out in time, he says. He has seen several changes since he was in school. Back then the big problem was chewing gum and asking a girl on a date,'l he says. Today, it is the pressure, the drugs, the alcohol, you name it. Mr. Powers currently lives in Lake Charles with his wife, Teresa, and daughter, Amanda Renee. He and his wife are expecting another child soon. I don't care if it's a boy or a girl, he says, as long as it's healthy. 6fDedication
