. Easy Answers 0 Tough. . . Mr. James Power, the counselor and a former English teacher at Iowa High School, has helped an uncountable number of students with their problems, from giving advice and seeing them through hard times, to guiding themlon the road to a higher education by aiding them in selecting careers and colleges for their futures. Originally from Kinder, LA, he has a bachelor's degree and master's in education, both from McNeese. He has spent eight of his ten years in the field of education at Iowa High school, four as an English teacher and four as a counselor. He says that his biggest challenge as a counselor is helping students with their serious problems. They come into my office looking for an easy answer - it's tough. He is also very pressed for time. He says that if he had all day to counsel, things would be a lot better, but he is overloaded with paperwork. Another difficult part of his job is handing out scholarships for seniors. It's a big and often unappreciated sacrifice since he is not required to do it. It is hard because he can't get any cooperation from the students. They just wait for things to fall in their laps and don't bother to fill the applications out in time, he says. He has seen several changes since he was in school. Back then the big problem was chewing gum and asking a girl on a date,'l he says. Today, it is the pressure, the drugs, the alcohol, you name it. Mr. Powers currently lives in Lake Charles with his wife, Teresa, and daughter, Amanda Renee. He and his wife are expecting another child soon. I don't care if it's a boy or a girl, he says, as long as it's healthy. 6fDedication

An English On August 5, 1986, a small group of students from Iowa High set off on a nine-day, once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Pam LeBleu, Joany Young, Tammy Du- gas, and Mrs. Belinda Dugas went on a trip to Eng- land, sponsored by Dr. Nancy Key. The group flew on a TWA plane out of Houston to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. From New York, they flew into Heathrow in London. In New York the group from Iowa met with a group from Baton Rouge, La., a group from Waycross, Ga., and a group from Annap- olis, Md. While in London, the group stayed at the Royal Scott Inn. They visited Windsor, Stratford, Oxford, Bath, Salisbary, and Stonehenge. The group also vis- ited suchtsights as: St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, the House of Parliament, Big Ben, Tower of London, Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Pal- ace, and a costume exhibit at the Victorian Albert Experience Museum in London. The group also saw the plays Mutiny, The Mouse- trap, and Blythe Spirit. This year the students even visited Portabello Road and Clapham Green which are two very large, very famous flea Markets. Most of the students agree that the food in England is not as good as it is here in the U.S. However, they did enjoy their Visit to Hard Rock Cafe. The trek- kers also gave a lot of business to a pizza parlor across the street from their hotel. They did have a short walk to one retaurant. Dr. Key, losing her famous sense of direction, led the group for an hour and a half on the way to the George Inn, an inn built in 1612. ' Both students and parents felt that the trip was a good one. All in all, it was a fun and educational experience that will never be forgotten, said Dr. Key. 'Ham
