The Old Gold and Black football team of 45 enjoyed a fairly successful season under Coach Flower. With eleven lettermen out of the 45 that reported for practice, the Cadets Won three games and lost six for a percent- age of .333. For the first time Waverly was added to the schedule making a total of nine games. - The team was handicapped by Meyers broken shoul- der, Voigt's dislocated elbow, and Hoing's twisted knee cap. The highlight was the defeat of Eldora by one point in one of the hardest fought games of the year. Although Eldora led 13-0 at the half, the fighting Cadets came back to score a 20-19 victory. This game marked Iowa Fall's twenty-sixth straight football victory over the Tigers. This year 19 men received major letters. Among these were 12 seniors and 7 underclassmen. The seniors re- ceiving letters were Russell Miller, Francis Voigt, Dick Olsen, Iohn Robbins, Arend Tjarks, Max Barker, Allan Hummel, Curt Iohnson, Christian Hansen, Ronnie Grand- george, Iames Rankin, and Chuck Wolford. The two managers receiving letters were Kenneth Nassen and Eugene I-leilin. Allan Hummel was selected Captain for the year. Delbert Mitterer was elected all-conference end by the coaches and officials. Arend Tjarks and Homer Bienfang made honorable mention on the All- State teams. Under the capable direction of Coach Howard Flower, the 1945-46 boys' basketball team came through the season winning 9 of their 18 games played. Oi the ll conferen played, the Cadets won 5 and lost 6 to give them a percentage of .455 and place them fifth in the North Central Conference. ln their l8 games the Old Gold and Black team scored 530 points to their opponents 671. Although there were only three lettermen returning from the previous year, 30 other boys reported for practice. Only four seniors are leaving the team-Francis Voigt, Allan Hurnrnel, Max Barker, and Bill Hoing. ce games For the 1945-46 season Bill Hoing was elected Captain by the team. Kenneth Nassen acted as manager. The Cadets only contestant in the section al tournament held at Hubbard was Eldora. They overcame them easily, drubbing them 40-16. ln the district tournament held at Cedar Falls, the Iowa Falls team- was defeated 29-35 by Oelwetn, after a closely fought game.
