Q9 Down-set-hike, was the familiar chant to any visitor viewing the practice sessions which molded the 1955 City High football team under the tutelage of Coach Frank Bates. Missing from the scene were most of the experienced veterans of last year's fine ball club. The inexperienced, but scrappy Little Hawks tasted defeat on numerous occasions. They were outscored many times, but never outfought. The I-lawklets opened their season at home by entertaining Cedar Falls. However, the Tigers proved too strong for their liking as they carried home an 18-13 victory. City High next played host to a very strong Cedar Rapids Franklin team. Again, inexperience caused the downfall of the Little Hawks. The Thunderbolts lived up to their name by shooting out to a Z7-U first quarter score. The l-lawklets fought back to hold the Bolts the rest of the game, but the damage had been done, and Franklin went away victorious, 33-U. The winless City High boys next went on the road to meet a very superior Davenport team. The hardecharging Blue Devils corn- pletely overpowered lowa City, Winning 48-U. The next Friday night proved a heart- breaking one for the Little Hawks, as they lost to Roosevelt, 6-U. Time after time, they were in scoring territory, only to lose the ball through fumbles or intercepted passes. Les Ferguson was knocked out after stopping tlus Dave McCuskey, quarterback, I8 about to b Franklin player. bowled over by an unidentified player A 2 The Clinton River Kings, inspired by their own Homecoming festivities, downed the Hawklets, 26-U, the following week on a rainy, mud-soaked field. The tide finally tumed for the Little Hawks, as they entered the win column for the first time against Wilson of Cedar Rap- ids, l9-7. Many observers felt that a por- tion of the win could be attributed to Bill Reichardt, a former City High football star, who delivered an inspiring preegame pep talk to the team and student body. Kuemper Academy of Carroll became the Hawklets' second victim as they absorbed a 34-U pasting. Iowa City fans began to think that Coach Bates had finally put together a winning combination. Undoubtedly the best game of the season for the Little Hawks was their Homecoming, when they met and readily defeated the highly-rated Dubuque Rams. City High fans found a lot to cheer about as the Hawklets dominated the game and came away with a glorious 19-7 Homecoming victory. The season finale found City High travel- ing to Rock Island, Illinois, to meet Alleman High. They encountered a tough, veteran ball club which trounced them soundly, 34-O. The season was unique for Iowa City High in that the team had to work extra hard and improve steadily all through the season to become a winning ball club. The season was successful in giving some jun- iors and sophomores valuable experience, and, all factors considered, the record was satisfactory. .lock Sclzwanh fumbles the ball whsle bemg tackled.
