Francis Beasley, 190-pound speedy tackle, was named on the all-MVC first, North's second, and was given honorable mention on the I.D.P.A. list. Although 195-pound fullback Rox Shain was plagued by injuries toward the end of the season, he was still outstanding enough to be placed on the all-MVC first, and received honorable-mention on both the I.D.P.A. and North's roster. Dave Crumley, rugged 165-pound guard and center was given acclaim on the I.D.P.A. and North honor roll, also. Dick Doran, 160-pound quarterback, the mastermind behind the Hawklets' successful season, received honorable-mention in jack North's selections. IOWA CITY 18, WEST WATERLOO 12-Beginning their season against a tough conference foe, the 1948 Little Hawk gridders turned in a terrific ball game to start the victory ball rolling. The first score came with about eight minutes gone in the first quarter when Dutcher bulled his way over the goal from the three. The remainder of the first half saw no scoring. On the second play of the last half, Landau of West caught the Hawklets' trousers at half-mast and ran 77 yards to make the score 6-6. The Hawklets then marched back 80 yards for their second bid for victory. Halfbacks Dutcher and Williams, together with a Doran-to-Hettrick pass, accounted for most of the yardage. Shain plunged through right tackle for the score. Mid-way through the fourth quarter, West drove 00 yards in nine plays for its final score, made by Landau from the 15. With only four minutes to go, the Little Hawks marched back 68 yards at the rate of four plays per minute. A Doran-to-Hettrick flip accounted for City High's game-breaking tally with only S0 seconds left None of Qhains conversion attempts were good but sinc West Waterloos werent either the little Hawks never were behind although tied twice DAVENPORT 13, IOWA CITY 0--The Little Hawks got off to a bad start in initiating the newly-constructed football field east of the school by dropping their second MVC game, 13-O, to Davenport. Neither ball club was outstanding on offense, but a tough, wide-awake Blue Devil defense spelled disaster for the Red and White eleven, The first score for the rivals was set up by a Hawklet fumble on its own 20-yard line. A few plays later, Iowa City had gotten the ball, but had kicked out only to its own 18, Five line-plunges later the Imps had drawn first blood. Oaks' placement was good and Davenport led, 7-0. Another fumble by the Hawklets on their own 25 set up the second Imp score. The Batesmen held two plays for no gain, but then Jaeger skirted left end for 24 yards to the one. Oaks scored on a quarterback sneak, but an enraged Hawklet line broke through and blocked his conversion attempt. The Blue Devil defense and the Hawklets' fumbles were the deciding factors of the game which saw the Little Hawks give Davenport the ball I2 times, only five of these being punts, the rest fumbles and intercepted passe IONYA CITY IS, WILSON 7-Although the score doesnt sound as if this game was a comparatively easy one, Iowa City amassed a total of 252 yards rushing as compared to VUilson's 60. A fumble-recovery made by john Fenton on W'ilson's I8 enabled Dutcher to score a few plays later. Shains conversion was good. Doran sneaked over from the one for the second Hawklet score. Wilscin's score came with a Hlavacek-to-Fulton aerial late in the third quarter. Miller added the extra point. The Hawklets drove to the Wilsontone, twice more in the last quarter, but the first was stopped by a penalty and the second by the final gun. IOXVA CITY 27, .NICKINLEY 0-The Hawklets outdid them- selves in an eflort to make good their 19-I8 Homecoming game by rolling over McKinley of Cedar Rapids. john Fen- ton recovered a Hawklet fumble in the end-zone for the first Iowa City score. Less than a minute later, Dutcher car- ried over from the Wilson four after another Fenton-recov- ered fumble. Snook bucked through the Bears' line for the Hawklets' third and fourth scores, both from the one. Shain was successful in three out of four extra-point kicks. IOWA CITY 14, DLIBUQUE I3-A Homecoming game was spoiled for Dubuque, but it was a breath-taker all the way. Scott scored from eight yards out and Handel converted for Dubuque with only four minutes gone in the game. In the middle of the second quarter, a Doran-to-Hettrick pass con- nected and Chain split the posts to tie the score at 7-7. Late in the third quarter, Richman ran 58 yards down the sideline to score for the Rams. Handel's placement went wide. The Hawklets then battled back to score with Doran and Hettrick again connecting, and Shain booting the decisive extra-point. IOXVA CITY 14, MARSHALLTOWN 0-Defensively, this was the Hawklets' big game of the year. Dave Crumley and john Fenton made the break for the first Red and White score hy blocking a punt on the Bobcat 15. Four plays later, Shain scored from the three, The second Hawklet score was set up by a 62-yard punt by Shain which put Marshalltown on its own one-yard-line. XY'hitehill punted out to the 34, but a violation of the fair-catch rule set the ball on the Hoh- Cats' IW. In four more plays, Shain scored again from the four. Both of Shain's conversions were good, IOWA CITY 27, CLINTON 0-Iowa City took the opening kick-off and after eleven plays, a Doran-to-Hettrick pass scored. A 70-yard quick-kick by Shain was a hig factor in putting the River Kings in a hole. Snook caught a partially- blocked punt and ran I8 yards for the second score, The third touchdown was blasted over by W'illiams as a Climax to a 75-yard Hawklet drive. A 73-yard punt by Shain was instrumental in the final score on which Anderson connected on a pass to Hettrick, Shain made three of four conversion attempts. BURLINGTON 15, IOXVA CITY 6-A power-laden Grey- hound eleven snapped the Hawklets' 5-game winning streak. All touchdowns were counted in the second quarter. Burling- ton began the fireworks as Savage scored from the 20, but missed the conversion. On the next kickoff, Xllfilliams took the ball hack 'Po yards before being tackled on the Greyhound two. Doran sneaked over for the lone Hawklet score. Lemme missed the extra-point try. In the last minute of the half a pass from Savage to McBride scored for Burlington. Savage plunged for the conversion. Late in the fourth quarter, the Creyhounds caught Beasley behind the Hawklet goal as he attempted to run a fake kick, and annexed two points to their score. IOXVA CITY iii, OTTUMWA 7-The final game of the season ended gloriously for the Hawklets. Dutcher scored on a trap play for Iowa City's initial touchdown. A Doran-to- Hettrick pass failed for the conversion. Doran hit Bill Fenton in the end zone for the second score for Iowa City, Beasley's line buck was stopped short in the extra-point try. The last Hawklet score was a sensational snag by Hettrick of an Anderson-passed ball, Hay sneakecl for the conversion, Ot- tumwa scored and converted late in the fourth quarter against Hawklet subs. 194 FO0TBALL LETTERME Gene Hettrick, 6' Mfg 205-pound senior end, won his third varsity letter this year, and was outstanding in the pass-snagging department. Bill Fenton, a 6' 2 170-pound junior, added a pass receiving threat at the other end. Henry Rate, a senior 6' 170-pounder, alternated at either of the ends when occasion demanded his defensive talents, and won his second letter. Francis Beasley, a three-year letterman who weighed in at 190 and was 6' tall, played tackle, handled most of the kicking assignments, and also occasionally shifted to fullback in an unbalanced T-forma- tion. Keith Slyve Hemingway, a 6' 2 171-pounder could always be depended upon to open gaping holes through his tackle. jack Cooper filled in at either tackle and opponents found that his 6' 225-pound frame was impossible to move very far. john Fenton earned his second letter for the Hawklets, as this 165-pound 5' ll senior operated from either guard or center. Chaunce Schmidt, another senior, who weighed in at 160 and was 5' l0i' tall, capably handled the other guard position. junior Gene Kupka demanded respect from opponents at guard, where he made up for his 5' 7 135-pound size by having lots of fight and aggressiveness. Larry Lemme, a 180-pound 5' 9 junior, also played a lot of ball at the guard slot. Senior Gene Cox, 5' 5 155-pound guard, earned his letter, too. Dave Crumley, a senior three-year letterman, applied his stocky 170-pound 5' 7 frame to a very good advantage at both center and guard. In the backfield Dick Doran, a 162-pound 5' Il senior, directed the Red and White attack with his alert signal- calling and was the first party of the deadly Doran-to-Hettrick combination. He earned his second major monogram this year. Kenie Hay, 155-pound 5' Il junior, substituted for Doran in the quarterback slot, spending much of his time on defense. Rox Shain, 6' TA 195-pound senior and three-year letterman, was the bull-dozer of the team, picking up badly needed yardage at crucial moments. Rox also handled some kicking assignments and got off kicks in the neighborhood of 60 to 70 yards. Dan Dutcher, Babe Snook, and Dick Williams alternated at the half-back slots most of the time. Dan, a 165-pound 6' senior two-letter man, was fast and elusive, although he played most of the season with a leg injury. Babe also played a little fullback mixed in with a lot of halfback. This was his second letter, and the 5' ll 155-pound senior really earned it. Dick, a 170-pound 6' senior, won his third varsity letter by adding speed to the already fast backfield. jerry White, a 5' 7 160-pound speedy left-halfback, was the only sopho- more to win a City High monogram. Clayton Yoder, a 175-pound 5' ll senior, won his letter at halfback, coming back after breaking his leg in the 1947 season. jim Cilek, also a senior, played a lot of fine defense in spite of his H5-pound 5' 6 build. Those earning minor letters were: jerry Anderson at quarterback, john Hays at quarter and at half, and Bob Diehl at end. FOOTBAFI. SQUAD limi' Row F. Frey, M. Moore, A, Krall, C. Yoder, K. Hay, j.
