CLASS HISTUHY On September 8, 1942, the members of the class of '46 entered the halls of lC.H.S. From the first they prom- ised to be an active class, when Ted Gunderson reached the finals of the poetry contest. They presented the fresh- man play, f'The Dyspeptic Ogre , starring Jim Waery, Shirley Yoder, Tom Dunnington, Mary Hunter, and Len- ard Strasburg in an assembly on December 2. To show that they did not want to be forgotten in the social world, they threw two 'fFreshmen Only parties. The first, on January 15, was sponsored by Miss Letts's ancient history classes. Lenard Strasburg was master of ceremonies at the second of these affairs held on May 21. A mock Shakespeare skit was presented by Jim Wiegand, Evan Smith, and Lenard Strasburg. Representing the class in organizations were: Mary Jane Baldwin, freshman representative to G.A.A., Mary Lou Kringel and Lillian Parizek were in Madrigal, De- light Matthess was the only freshman cheer leader, and Duane Smith was elected president of the newly organ- ized Stamp and Hinge. Bob Devine earned his first golf letter this year. This same class returned to school the next fall, con- scious a little more of what was going on. On February 16, they presented The Kid Makes Up His Mind with Jackie Gringer, Tom Taylor, Mary Hunter, Betty Crow, and Charlie Colony. Joyce Johnson, Lillian Parizek, Martha Hiscock, and Duane Smith took part in the operetta, My Maryland . Phyllis Teefy was chosen sophomore representative to G.A.A. and Jackie Kelly was a member of the G.R. cabinet. Madrigal Group claimed Lillian Parizek, Mar- tha Hiscock, Mary Lou Kringel and Mattie Albrecht. Delight Matthess, Le Roy Vandenberg, Bob Pate, and Bruce Higley were on the cheering squad. Bob Krall won a letter in varsity football and Bob Freeman in varsity basketball. Track letters were earned by Bill Olson, Bob Freeman, and Ted Gunderson. Golf and tennis letters were presented to Bob Devine and Bruce Higley, respec- tively. Not to be outdone by the Junior-Senior, they put on a Freshman-Sophomore party in the social hall that spring. This time, the freshies were guests of their older brothers and sisters. Starting out as upperclassmen, the juniors immediately selected Tom Dunnington, president, Bill Olson, vice- presidentg and Mary Jane Baldwin, secretary-treasurer. VVith thoughts of the Junior-Senior, the class began to earn money. After a year of hard, but enjoyed work, the amazing total earned was 15670. The actors in the class gave as their play Janie , Par- ticipating were Joyce Johnson, Tom Dunnington, Mary Jane Baldwin, Betty Crow, Shirley Buxton, Chan Coulter, Margaret Goodnow, Don Krieg, Martha Hiscock, Lenard Strasburg, and Bob Devine. Starring in Victor Herbert's operetta, The Red Mill , were Lillian Parizek, Tom Dunnington, Joe Baker, Mar- tha Hiscock, and Le Roy Vandenberg. The junior members earning letters on the Mississippi Valley Conference Championship basketball team were Bob Freeman, Jim Van Deusen, Bob Krall, Evan Smith, and Bill Olson. Winners of football letters were Bob Krall, Ted Gunderson, Bill Olson, Lenard Strasburg, Harold 'Eakes, Evan Smith, Bob Devine, and Bob Free- man. Bob Devine copped a letter in golf and Bob Free- man and Bruce Higley earned one in tennis. Track let- ter winners were Chan Coulter, Harold Eakes, Ted Gun- derson, Carl Hinrichs, Bill Olson, and Evan Smith. Bill Olson and Ted Gunderson were chosen as co-captains of the 1946 team. After the first year of baseball, Bob Krall, Bob Oldis, Jim Van Deusen, Charles Snook, and Bill Con- don earned letters. G.O.G. elected Ted Gunderson as president and Betty Nolan, secretary. Margaret Lee was a member of the Girls' Rifie Team. Duane Smith, Tom Dunnington, Mary Lou Kringel, Mattie Albrecht, Martha Hiscock, and Lil- lian Parizek sang in Madrigal. Tom Dunnington was president and Joyce Johnson, librarian, of mixed chorus. After a much needed three months' vacation, the seniors came back to elect Lenard Strasburg, president, Bonnie Wanamaker, vice-president, and Diane Horrabin, secre- tary-treasurer. Members of the senior council included Mary Jane Baldwin, Marion Kirby, Joyce Johnson, Mary Lou Krin- gel, Joann Paulus, Bonnie Wanamaker, Jackie Kelly, Betty Nolan, Margaret Goodnow, Betty Crow, Chan Coulter, Tom Dunnington, Don Krieg, Jim Van Deusen, Evan Smith, Bill Olson, and Lenard Strasburg. Mary Jane Baldwin reigned as queen over Homecom- ing. Her attendants were Joann Paulus, Joyce Johnson, Diane Horrabin, Audrey Ellis, Jackie Kelly, and Mar- garet Goodnow. Lillian Parizek, Duane Smith, Martha Hiscock, and Tom Dunnington had leading roles in the colorful oper- etta, Sweethearts . Shakespeare came to life when Paint and Patches presented As You Like It with Shirley Buxton, Don Krieg, Tom Dunnington, and Chan Coulter as senior leads. Bob Krall, Lenard Strasburg, and Evan Smith were chosen captains of the 1945 football team. Those receiv- ing letters were Smith, Krall, Strasburg, Bill Olson, Dale Stark, Bob Devine, and Harold Eakes. Evan Smith was elected to the first team I.D.P.A. and third team North's All-State, while .Lenard Strasburg and Bob Krall won honorable mention on both. Helping to win the 1946 state basketball championship were these senior letter winners: Bob Freeman, Bob Krall, Jim Van Deusen, Bob Crowe, Evan Smith, and Dale Stark. Freeman and Van Deusen were chosen as co-captains of the team. Freeman won a berth on first team I.D.P.A. and on North's first team All-State. North gave honorable mention to Van Deusen and Krall. Holding club ofhces were: Mary Jane Baldwin and Audrey Hunt, G.A.A. board, Gwen Pudgil, president of Girl Reserves, with ,Dorothy Slemmons, Joann Paulus, Audrey Hunt, Mary Dvorsky, Mary Reimers, Virginia Wheeler, Lorna Dohrer on the cabinet, Tom Dunnington, president, and Joyce Johnson, vice-president, Chan Coul- ter, secretary-treasurer, Betty Crow, program chairman, of Paint and Patches. Winning first with his original oration in the state for- ensic meet, Lenard Strasburg earned a four-year scholar- ship to the University of Iowa. Mattie Albrecht won first in the state with her contralto solo as did the Madrigal Group composed of these seniors: Mattie Albrecht, Joyce Johnson. Rex Parks, Carl Hinrichs, and Betty Nolan. Bruce Higley was captain of the cheerleaders. The first United Airlines plane to stop in Iowa City was christened by our own Bonnie Wanamaker, Again the actors stepped to the limelight and presented the outstanding plav, George Washington Slept Here , starring Martha Hiscock, Tom Dunnington, Mary Jane Baldwin, Boyd Workhoven, Shirley Buxton, Don Krieg, Lenard Strasburg, Jim fWaery, Joyce Johnson, Sally Barnes, Janet Shacklett, Mary Dvorsky, Dick Duncan, Rex Parks, and Margaret Marsh.
