Hy Mun' Iltrxrrk CLASS HISTUHY On September 8, 1942, the members of the class of '46 entered the halls of lC.H.S. From the first they prom- ised to be an active class, when Ted Gunderson reached the finals of the poetry contest. They presented the fresh- man play, f'The Dyspeptic Ogre , starring Jim Waery, Shirley Yoder, Tom Dunnington, Mary Hunter, and Len- ard Strasburg in an assembly on December 2. To show that they did not want to be forgotten in the social world, they threw two 'fFreshmen Only parties. The first, on January 15, was sponsored by Miss Letts's ancient history classes. Lenard Strasburg was master of ceremonies at the second of these affairs held on May 21. A mock Shakespeare skit was presented by Jim Wiegand, Evan Smith, and Lenard Strasburg. Representing the class in organizations were: Mary Jane Baldwin, freshman representative to G.A.A., Mary Lou Kringel and Lillian Parizek were in Madrigal, De- light Matthess was the only freshman cheer leader, and Duane Smith was elected president of the newly organ- ized Stamp and Hinge. Bob Devine earned his first golf letter this year. This same class returned to school the next fall, con- scious a little more of what was going on. On February 16, they presented The Kid Makes Up His Mind with Jackie Gringer, Tom Taylor, Mary Hunter, Betty Crow, and Charlie Colony. Joyce Johnson, Lillian Parizek, Martha Hiscock, and Duane Smith took part in the operetta, My Maryland . Phyllis Teefy was chosen sophomore representative to G.A.A. and Jackie Kelly was a member of the G.R. cabinet. Madrigal Group claimed Lillian Parizek, Mar- tha Hiscock, Mary Lou Kringel and Mattie Albrecht. Delight Matthess, Le Roy Vandenberg, Bob Pate, and Bruce Higley were on the cheering squad. TOURNAMENT PLAY DISTRICT TOURNAMENT-Coe FIELDHOUSE City High had little trouble in subduing their first tournament foe, Wilson of Cedar Rapids, 42 to 33. Freeman paced the Hawklets with 18 points. Next a spirited U. High team put up a terrific battle on a. City High off-night before falling, 28 to 26. Freeman led with 14 points. SUB-STATE-TOVVA FIELDHOUSE The Little Hawks were really up for this contest, with Davenport. The Hawklets and Blue Devils put on a fine exhibition of high school basketball, each team playing superbly. City High had too much stuff for the Devils, and took the game, 40 to 31. Freeman hit for twelve. Next, City High renewed its tournament rivalry with Ottumwa, and this time won, 30 to 25, thus gaining revenge for former years when Ottumwa has blasted the Hawklets out of the tournament. It was a tight game all the way, as the Bulldogs continually threatened. Krall with 10 was high. STATE FINALS-IOWA FIELDHOUSE City High did not look very impressive as they knocked off a rather impotent Lansing five, 39 to 30. The Hawklets could not seem to get the ball rolling. Van Deusen slipped in 10 markers. The Little Hawks turned what was supposed to be a tough encounter into somewhat of a rout as they played near-perfect ball to subdue a feared Harlan team, 53 to 32. Hitting an astounding of their shots in the second quarter, the Hawklets had a game average of AMW. The game total was the highest of the tournament, and one of the highest in tourney history. Freeman netted 16. Although they led until the final three minutes, Danbury's Marooris fell before the Little Hawk onslaught, 25 to 24. The frigid Hawklets almost fell to the conquerors of Clinton and had to stall out the last minutes of the game. We hit only 202: of shots. Freeman again led, with 11. City High won its first State Basketball Championship, from the towering Le1Wars Bulldogs, 41 to 40, as 16,000 watched the most thrilling finish in tournament history. With 55 seconds remaining and the Hawklets trailing by five points, Bob Freeman hit for three field goals to provide the margin of vic- tory. LeMars held a 20-21 halftime advantage, but the Little Hawks raced to a six point margin in the third quarter. The Bulldogs then turned on the steam early in the final period, to take over the lead by five points. They held this until the last minute, when Bob took over. Scoring: Freeman, 22 points.
