CLASS HISTURY Frank Snider, Ion Dunnington, Harold Hartvigsen, Robert McCollister, Dean Housel, Bruce Knowles, lack Dooley, lack Murray, Margaret Kemp, Ruth Husa, Wanda Spaan, Marilyn Sid- well, Beth Wilson, Helen Gower, Dorothy Hubbard, and Ruth Ann Opfell were chosen by the faculty as members of the senior council. Climaxing Homecoming festivities, the student body chose Marilyn Sidwell Homecoming Queen. Her attendants were Rosemary Farrell, Dorree Hauser, Margaret Kemp, Gretchen Yetter, Ieanne Murray, and Dorothy Hubbard. The music department sponsored The Red Mill by Victor Herbert with Nancy Iones, Bill Rodgers, Ruth Husa, Margaret Kemp, Beth Wilson, Ianet Ziemer, and Dean Housel taking prominent parts. I Seniors in the madrigal group were Margaret Kemp, Nancy Iones, and Bruce Knowles with Helen Gower as accompanist. , . Girl Reserve officers were Helen Gower, president: Mary Dunlap, vice-president: Wanda Spaan, secretary: Eunice Lacina, treasurer, Ruth Husa, publicity: and Beth Wilson, member- ship. A G. A. A. girls elected Ioan Baldwin, president: Marilyn Sidwell, vice-president, Dorothy Hubbard, secretary: Gretchen Yetter, treasurer: and Wanda Spaan, publicity chairman. Evan Tallman became president of Paint and Patches, Ion Dunnington, vice-president: Nancy Iones, secretary: and Mary Dunlap, program chairman. Tom Hirt and Tug Wilson were elected honorary co-captains of the football team for 1944. Hirt was on the I. D. P. A. lst team and the Des Moines Register's 2nd team. Ruben Snider made the Register's 2nd team and the I. D. P. A. 3rd team. Winning their letters were Dean Housel, Russell Lackender, Wayne Lacina, Bob Lee, Chester Miller, Bob Strub, Carl Voelckers, Tug Wilson, Bud Ruppert, Ruben Snider, and Tom Hirt. The basketball team brought home to City High its first undisputed Mississippi Valley Conference Championship in the history of our school. Seniors and letterwinners on the team were Don Sehr, Russell Lackender, Dick Kallaus, Otto Proehl, Dean Hartzler, and Bud Ruppert. Iowa City was well-represented in the Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves with Dean Housel fighting his way to the Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves 135 pound championship and Wayne Lacina making his way to the semi-finals in the 160 pound class. The Paint and Patches play Sun-Up featured several seniors-Helen Gower, Iack Dooley, Evan Tallman, Mary Dunlap, and Harold Hartvigsen. Finalists in the poetry contest were Helen Gower, Harold Hartvigsen, Iack Dooley, and Mary Dunlap. You Can't Take It With You, a hilarious comedy, was presented by the senior class featuring Helen Gower, Ruth Husa, Mary Dunlap, Ion Dunnington, Bill Rodgers, Harold Hart- vigsen, Frank Snider, Evan Tallman, Marilyn Sidwell, Dean Housel, Bob McCollister, Gretchen Yetter, Ioe Weber, Ann Wilson, and Margaret Kemp.

EL SS HISTUHY Way back in the fall of 1941, some very remarkable freshmen entered the halls of City High. Although, as freshmen, they were rather shy and timid land greatly in need of a floor plan to find their classroomsl, some of them recovered themselves sufficiently to gain a little recognition. Tommy Hirt and Ruben Snider started right out on the varsity football squad and earned themselves a couple of letters. Betty Lou Williams reached the finals in the poetry contest. As freshman representative to G. A. A., the girls chose Ruth Husa. After resting over summer, the class gained strength and courage and ventured forth to new heights. As sophomores, they were feeling pretty important, you know. A new club appeared on the horizon-Stamp and Hinge-and lean Dryer was elected vice-president. G. O. G. voted lean Dryer vice-president and Ann Wilson secretary-treasurer. Mr. Martin chose Nancy Iones as a member of the madrigal group. Marilyn Browning reached the finals in the poetry contest. Football letter winners were Tom Hirt, Ruben Snider, and Chester Miller. Nancy Iones and Bruce Knowles represented their class in the cast of the Gondoliers, the operetta for that year. Starting out in September, 1943, as brand-new upperclassmen, the juniors elected Bruce Knowles, presidentp Dean Housel, vice-president: and Dorothy Hubbard, secretary-treasurer. Thoughts of the Iunior-Senior were uppermost in their minds, and the class set to work ener- getically to raise the necessary money. The result was the astounding total of 354307. Starring in the junior play Out of the Frying Pan were Alvin Iohnson, Ion Dunnington, Ruth Husa, Bill Rodgers, Ieanne Murray, Rosemary Farrell, Dorree Hauser, Margaret Kemp, Robert Lightner, Dick King, Robert McCollister, Chester Miller, and lean Dryer. Leading the student body as cheerleaders were Beatrice Nelson, Corinne Douglas, and Kathryn Kennedy. The operetta for that year was Sigmund Romberg's My Maryland with Nancy Iones, lack Murray, lack Dooley, Mary Dunlap, and Evan Tallman taking leads. Tom Hirt and Ruben Snider again copped football letters, but not to be outdone, Bob Lee, Chester Miller, Bob Strub, and Tug Wilson followed their example and garnered their letters. Bob Oldis also received a letter for being manager of the team. Ruben Snider attained honor- able mention on the I. D. P. A. all-state selections. Tom Hirt earned places on North's All- State lst team and the I. D. P. A. 3rd team. Winners of basketball letters were: Dick Kallaus, Wayne Lacina, and Bob Lee. Girl Reserves elected Eunice Lacina treasurer. Corinne Douglas, Dorothy Hubbard, and Ioan Baldwin were G. A. A. board members. Gretchen Yetter was chosen captain of the Girls' Rifle Club. Lyle Nesbitt became vice-president and lean Dryer secretary-treasurer of G. O. G. Stamp and Hobby Club elected Ioe Weber secretary-treasurer. Nancy Iones and Bruce Knowles sang in the madrigal group. The juniors on the Little Hawk staff pioneered and got rid of our mimeographed paper and started the present printed newspaper. After three months of uninterrupted joy, the seniors trudged back to school for their last year. Leading the class were Harold Hartvigsen, president: Frank Snider, vice-president: and Eunice Lacina, secretary-treasurer.
