EL SS HISTUHY Way back in the fall of 1941, some very remarkable freshmen entered the halls of City High. Although, as freshmen, they were rather shy and timid land greatly in need of a floor plan to find their classroomsl, some of them recovered themselves sufficiently to gain a little recognition. Tommy Hirt and Ruben Snider started right out on the varsity football squad and earned themselves a couple of letters. Betty Lou Williams reached the finals in the poetry contest. As freshman representative to G. A. A., the girls chose Ruth Husa. After resting over summer, the class gained strength and courage and ventured forth to new heights. As sophomores, they were feeling pretty important, you know. A new club appeared on the horizon-Stamp and Hinge-and lean Dryer was elected vice-president. G. O. G. voted lean Dryer vice-president and Ann Wilson secretary-treasurer. Mr. Martin chose Nancy Iones as a member of the madrigal group. Marilyn Browning reached the finals in the poetry contest. Football letter winners were Tom Hirt, Ruben Snider, and Chester Miller. Nancy Iones and Bruce Knowles represented their class in the cast of the Gondoliers, the operetta for that year. Starting out in September, 1943, as brand-new upperclassmen, the juniors elected Bruce Knowles, presidentp Dean Housel, vice-president: and Dorothy Hubbard, secretary-treasurer. Thoughts of the Iunior-Senior were uppermost in their minds, and the class set to work ener- getically to raise the necessary money. The result was the astounding total of 354307. Starring in the junior play Out of the Frying Pan were Alvin Iohnson, Ion Dunnington, Ruth Husa, Bill Rodgers, Ieanne Murray, Rosemary Farrell, Dorree Hauser, Margaret Kemp, Robert Lightner, Dick King, Robert McCollister, Chester Miller, and lean Dryer. Leading the student body as cheerleaders were Beatrice Nelson, Corinne Douglas, and Kathryn Kennedy. The operetta for that year was Sigmund Romberg's My Maryland with Nancy Iones, lack Murray, lack Dooley, Mary Dunlap, and Evan Tallman taking leads. Tom Hirt and Ruben Snider again copped football letters, but not to be outdone, Bob Lee, Chester Miller, Bob Strub, and Tug Wilson followed their example and garnered their letters. Bob Oldis also received a letter for being manager of the team. Ruben Snider attained honor- able mention on the I. D. P. A. all-state selections. Tom Hirt earned places on North's All- State lst team and the I. D. P. A. 3rd team. Winners of basketball letters were: Dick Kallaus, Wayne Lacina, and Bob Lee. Girl Reserves elected Eunice Lacina treasurer. Corinne Douglas, Dorothy Hubbard, and Ioan Baldwin were G. A. A. board members. Gretchen Yetter was chosen captain of the Girls' Rifle Club. Lyle Nesbitt became vice-president and lean Dryer secretary-treasurer of G. O. G. Stamp and Hobby Club elected Ioe Weber secretary-treasurer. Nancy Iones and Bruce Knowles sang in the madrigal group. The juniors on the Little Hawk staff pioneered and got rid of our mimeographed paper and started the present printed newspaper. After three months of uninterrupted joy, the seniors trudged back to school for their last year. Leading the class were Harold Hartvigsen, president: Frank Snider, vice-president: and Eunice Lacina, secretary-treasurer.
