Modern Shop Techmques Prepare 31,5 , Don Caruth works with one of the many modern machines in the Machine Shop, The eleven-month Machine Shop program trained students in all the basic skills necessary to qualify in the machine shop trades, Under the instruction of Mr, james Wiggerman, related classroom study and shop work were integrated to provide the necessary training. The course trained students to operate the metal lathe, the milling machine, the surface grinder, the turrett lathe, the metal shaper and many other metal working machines. The students re- ceived training in machine operating, in general machine shop work, and in a basic amount of tool and die making. The course consisted of a total of 1320 hours. Of those hours, 995 were spent in the modern machine shop and the other 325 were spent on related subjects. The related subjects covered included metals, machine shop mathematics, basic machine electricity, and welding, Measuring fun- damentals, shop safety, blueprint reading and draft- ing, and time, motion, and quality control were also studied. John Barr finds that setting up a lathe requires ex- treme accuracy, Mr. james Wiggerman, instructor, demonstrates proper operation of a machine press to some of his students,
