IOWA Heads to Sea It was a cool brisk moming on June 7 as Battleship IOWA eased away from her berth at the Norfolk Naval Base. As the WWII vintage battleship hauled in her mooring lines and was relieved of her accomodation brows forward and aft, family and friends of crewmembers waved their goodbyes from pier 11 for what would be a six month separation. In addition, various media were on hand to record the event as IOWA slowly steamed toward the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and out into the Atlantic. Although the separation from loved ones is always difficult, the adventure and experience of the North Atlantic!Meditera- nean Cruise promised to be great. With that in mind, IOWA sailors tumed their minds to the deployment that lay before them as well as the eventual homecoming.
