14772 I0 A T KE I FDR ACRGSS THE Iowa was selected to carry President Roosevelt from the U.S. to Mersel-Kebir, North Af- rica, the first leg of his trip to the Teheran conference with Chur- chill and Stalin Because of the secrecy of the mission the President ordered that no honors were to be ren dered him And so on November I3 1943 Iowa slipped out of Hampton Roads Virginia with the Commander in Chief A white porcelain bathtub the only one on any U S Navy ship had been installed in the Captains cabin for the President who suf fered from infantile paralysis It remains in place today Iowa was forced to return to sea during the Teheran conference but returned to North Africa to embark the President and after crossing the equator and visiting Bahia Bra Unfortunately one of Iowas escort ships W D Porter CDD 5791 was the cause of what Capt McCrea Iowas skipper would later call in his official report the only untoward incident of the trip Porter was makrng prac tice torpedo runs on Iowa when a live torpedo was accrentally fired directly at Iowa Porter immedr ately signalled torpedo coming your way As Iowa came to a full speed and turned hard to ward Porter the torpedo s wake could be seen 1 000 yards away President Roosevelt was a special guest aboard Iowa m November 1943 Iowa was assigned to take the Commander in Chief across the Atlantic for a sum mit meeting wrtlz the Allred leaders Be fore departing he talked to all hands on the fantatl
