Your con- duct ashore and afloat has been exemplary, and by your associa- tions with people, foreign and domestic, you have broadened your education. Your initiative and willingness to grasp the basic phases of undergraduate naval education was evident to us who observed you during the eight weeks spent as an integrated part of ships company. The understanding of the ship as a lighting unit in which each department plays a coordinated part to achieve ulti- mate success is an accomplishment all can share. The proper sense of duty, responsibility and leadership that you take with you will serve well in the fttture. The path was not always easy, but by strict application to the rules you will find yourself' better able to lead, and to assume your responsibilities as an officer in the Navy. To all-XVIQLI. The USS IOWA IBB 615 had been on the drawing boards since 1930 and was the first of her 45,000 ton class. On 22 February, 1943, the IOWA was ofhcially baptized as one of the United States Fleet commanded by Captain john L. McCrea, USN. The rest of the lighting ladies in the IOWA class are USS YVIS- CONSIN QBB-64j, USS MISSOURI QBB-63j, USS NEW jERSEY QBB-621. In order to impress your friends, here are a few statistics you should know. The IOWA is 887 feet long, just 12 feet short of three football fields laid end to end, 108 feet broad, and her tallest point is 186 feet from her keel. She has a speed of 32 knots and carries 2,582,000 gallons of fuel, enough to float a Liberty ship. Her electrical generators can handle the industrial and domestic demands of a city of twenty thousand. Her eight turbines produce 200,000 horsepower which drive four propellers. Her nine 16-inch guns and 20 five-inch guns have a devastating fire power at ranges up to 23 miles. She is capable of cruising for 67 days without mooring. The first war assignment for IOWA came in August of 1943, when she embarked for Newfoundland for the Tirpitz Watch. In November of 1944, she carried the late president Franklin D. Roosevelt to his conference in Teheran with Winston Churchill and Stalin. Following that she was sent to the Pacific to participate in the bombardment of Truk in the Caroline Islands. From the battle of Truk, IOWA hustled over to assist Vice Admiral Mark C. Mitscher on Tinian Island in the Marianas. Finally she got a soft duty chit in October of 1944 when she was assigned as press ship for the fleet. In October of 1945, she came home and in 1946 was made flagship for the First Fleet. IOWA then took part in the traditional drills, cruises, and maneuvers of a peace-time Navy. The middies were taken aboard in 1946 for a west coast summer cruise. In 1948, the ship was put into the moth ball fleet in San Francisco. IOWA was recommissioned in August of 1951 and went on her shakedown cruise from San Diego. After advanced training in Hawaii she relieved her sister ship USS WISCONSIN as Hag ship for Vice Admiral Robert P. Briscoe, USN, Commander of the Seventh Fleet stationed at Yokusuka, japan. On 20 May, Vice Admiral Briscoe was relieved by Vice Admiral joseph j. Clark, USN, and the ship left immediately for Korea. She spent seven months in Korea, furnishing fire support for more than 50 gun strikes. Her strikes were concentrated in the Chongjin, Koje, Wosan, and Sonjin areas where she fired over four thousand 16-inch and more than eight thousand Hve-inch shells. During this seige she steamed more than forty thousand miles. After her tour of tluty in Korea, Vice Admiral joseph j. Clark sent this message to IOWA: The high morale and steadfast devotion of duty aboard the IOWA have been an example and inspiration to all units of the Seventh Fleet. To Captain Cooper, the officers, and crews-WELL DONE AND GODSP1-LED. On 5 February, 1953, she entered the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for an overhaul. Fourteen weeks later IOWA left for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for a six weeks refresher training cruise. She returned to Norfolk on 3 july, and on 8 july, Captain joshua W. Cooper, USN, was relieved by Captain Wayne R. Loud, USN, as Commanding Oflicer. On 13 jttly, IOWA embarked on Midshipman Cruise Baker. pu- ' Now bear a hand! The Admiral shows 'em how. Aboard IOWA, however, the first attempt was made to capture and solidify this phenemona of the ages. It is whispered among ancient seafaring people that the beginning of highline transfer carrie with the dawn of creation. They tell the quaint story of some subhuman species swinging hand over hand for paw over paw as the case may bel through the steaming jungles and across prehis- toric rivers. Archeologists seem to substantiate this theory and have evidence such as several knotted fossils found by the banks of the Tigres and Eu- phrates rivers still entangled in vines. Since that time we have innumerable instances ol' travel by highline. It is rtunored that Noah as the flood was reaching the tops of the trees was forced to highline at least two species of monkeys and tockatoo in a bosun's chair formed from bamboo and banana leaves. Thence to 400 BC and the Carthagenians. Their use of the corvus ta rope device by which they lashed to the Roman ships and Sent over their warriorsj was instrumental in the development of modern highline methods. The courage and daring of men throughout the ages has been tested on the pretarious highliue. From Og the ape man with his vine between two trees to a university president on the highline supported hy two groups of 5WCZlliI1g middies, we have the glorious history of the highline wayfarers, Intermingled with the formation of the Nautical Order of I-lighline Wav- larers is however an eternal question: Who is the Phantom lrlighliner? But to the midship- men, the third-classmen in particular, it was the beginning of an experience entirely different from the usual college routine. The first-classmen realized it was their last practical training before becoming naval officers. All day long an endless stream of middies came aboard, each getting his bunk assignment, his compartment ntnnber, his division, and many other first day details. Over 300 CZUUC aboard the Grey Ghost , were checked in, and shown their quarters by waiting enlisted men. By 1800 most of them were squared away and were waiting in the first of many chow lines for the evening meal. 'laps sounded at 2200 and lights went out in the sleeping compartments. Many of the middies had been borne liast on a giant wave of studs and the notes of the bugle came as a sort of anti-climax since almost everyone had already turned in. Early the next morning, division ofhcers began the task of getting their men organized. Watch, Quarter, and Station bills were posted to show them where they would help maintain the spotless condition of the ship, an accomplishment achieved and held in high esteem by the crew. 'Io the tune of a four on and eight off schedule, the midshipmcn learned the mystic joys of 24-hour-a-day living. In order to teach the 800 middies all the aspects of shipboard life, they were split up iI1lO three phases, Engineering, Operations-Navigation, and Gunnery. The phases were to bc shifted approximately every two weeks. In the engineering spaces, ship's company was kept busy answering questions and conducting instructions conterning the maintenance and operation of the propulsion units. Under supervision of the officers and crew, middies in the operations phase took part in the handling of a battle-wagon at sea. The watches, ranging from Midshipman OOD to the lookouts, discovered that it takes a carefully planned schedule to operate one of the Navy's ships of the line. Shortly after beginning the gunnery phase came the abrupt realization that gunncry covers much more than its name implies. This was evidenced by the disgruntled looks on the laces of the newcomers when they were presented with paint brushes, swabs and holystones. Throughout this phase, with assistance and supervision from the crew, the middies main- tained all guns and kept the topside decks and paintwork clean and shipshape. After the middies got used to shipboard life, and the ollicers and crew got used to them, the crossing to lidinburgh settled into routine. One of the few unscheduled events occurred when a midshipman managed to get himself catapulted over the side during a fuel transfer. A destroyer on life-guard duty picked him up in record time and returned him safely to IOXVA by highline when the fueling operation was completed. The seventh day at sea, a rainy, wind-swept Sunday at that, proved to be not a day of rest but one of turbulence. Heavy seas tossed the ship around a hit but there were no casualties, Huwever, a few of the men suffered slight cases of seasickness, an unusual hap- pening aboard the Mighty I . As IOXVA neared the British Isles, the morale ol the entire ship seemed to rise. .Xfter all, I4 days at sea is a long time to be without wine, women and song. Green, Commander Battleship Division Two, has command of the only four U. S. battle- ships now in commission: MISSOURI, USS IOWA, USS WISCONSIN, and USS NEW JERSEY. As division commander he has military command and operational control of the ships in his division. His basic mission is to keep the battleships in the highest state of operational and battle readiness. To do this he and his stall' co- ordinate exercises, inspections, and all matters of training. COMIBATDIV-TWO in the performance of his duties is assisted by a staff of 6 oflicers and a flag allowance of 36 men. The flag allowance consists of many diversified rates-yeomen, quartermasters, journalists, boatswain mates, and radiomen, and is organized as the G Di- vision for administration by the flagship. DIVISION The Admiral always flys his flag on a battleship and moves from one-BB to another, depending on the schedule of his ships and the nature of their mission. For the past two months, COME.-X'lSDlV-'I'XVO has been assigned the task of planning for and carrying out Midshipman Cruise Baker to Northern Europe and Cuba. Rear Admiral Green relieved Rear Admiral H. R. Thuber, USN, on 7 November, 1952 and will complete a lOtll' of duty as COMIS.-XTDIV-'I'WO this fall. The Admiral has been a familiar face to all aboard and will be remembered as a good shipmate. Although the Commanding Ollicer, and the Ollicer ol the Deck under him, are directly responsible for the safe navigation of the ship, it falls the lot of the Naviga- tion Ollicer to make important recommendations to them. In addition to plotting long range courses and speeds for the ship to lol- low, the Navigation Department must at all times have an accurate account of the position of the ship. The Navigator must make regular reports to the Commanding Ollicer concerning the position of the ship. To aid him in making his position reports, the Navigator, in addition to .-r- the heavenly bodies, has at his disposal sexeral man made navigational aids, among these are: radio, radar, loran, and the fathometer. When a ship approatlres land the real test of a good navigator is at hand. The exact position of the ship must be known, and an accurate plot of the ship's future course and speed must be kept. The Navigator is continually taking bearing cuts on objects in sight, receiving radar ranges, and check- ing the depth of the water. LCDR J. MCLAUGHLIN, USN Nnviguior l if .. , A V r A 'iz . '.. Navy has someone. if only a single pharmacists mate, to look after the health of the men. On a large ship such as IOWA, the medical and dental outlay rivals that of many city hospitals. The linest medical equipment available can be found in Sick Bay. Of course equipment alone cannot mal-ae ll man well. It takes trained technicians in the use of such equipment, along with competent doctors and hospital corpsmen to complete the task. This combination gives the Navy a one-two punch against disease and injury, and enables her hghting men to be ready and able at all times. As the Medical Department is constantly lighting disease and providing aid in emergencies, likewise, the Dental Department is keeping the Cuspids and molars of the men ship-shape . A man with a toothache is worthless both to himself and the Navyg therefore the Dental De- partment is on hand to ease the pain and repair damage. . -Q., -f. . - I-ff ,.., ,K . ,...,,. ,. V,,.,,, YW.
