.S.S. X.. A ,5 to many people. Men ow the have feelings about their ships that landsmen cannot understand. Fo' sl is a har j mistress. She carries you oll' to distant lands, far from those you love. he 'mands unc sing attention, day and night, fair weather and foul. She keeps you up l f the night n watch, then drags you to pre-dawn battle stations. She bakes you in the lireroom, an 1 freezes you on lifebuoy watch. She's a p 1 'erse creature, with little softness to her. But sh has another side, that comes out on certain evenings, when the sun has set and the soft ' ow of twilight hangs over the sea. You sit topside in the cool night air, and spill tales w your shipmates in the quiet hush about you. Beneath your feet you feel the faint throb ,- her powerful engines, driving her sleek hull through the long rollers-and every now and then she llings a careless breath of spray into the air to mist across your face. Somewhere nearby a guitar strums softly. Above you towers the massive forelnast, its bulk softened by the night, shadowy against the stars. When shc's in that sort of mood you wouldn't trade her, with all her unreasonable ways, for anything else in the world. That's how we feel about the IOWA. We've polished her, painted her, nursed her through a ih0l152Uld IFOUIJICS, and she hasn't thanked us yet. But she's taken us places, and showed us things, -2-1, narle us a lot of friends we'd never have met if it hadn't been for her. And taking ' Od with lh , She's been the best ship in the United States BB'6I l I
