!!!!!!!! HHH- rm Many Americans saw red over the mini- series of Amerika. ABC invested $35 million - and 14 hours of primetime- in a controversial, what-if miniseries . about a Soviet takeover of the U.S. in 1996. It ended up lengthy and worse yet, boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many people gave up watching f , TV, [if possible,] and turned on the HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, ESPN, etc. Cable was extremely popular,except,of course, in the country. It must have been the Big Apple Year 'cuz in baseball, the Mets beat the Boston Red Sox in the 1986 World Series. In college ball, U of M was defeated in the Rose Bowl by Arizona State,but GRJC won the Texas Tyler, Junior College bowl. The ■ ■ . Detroit Redwings were rev du- alized and moved to the top of their division - underdogs turn topdogs! The Pistons also moved up from the depths and into the top of their league. We got used to watching our Detroit Lions lose out play very, very shabbily! General Motors t igh t ened it's belt in a rough economic time. Forced to close 5 plants in the Mid west, roughly 6000 workers were unemployed. r • Torrential Rain caused a lot of flooding around much of the Michigan farm land, causing much damage. Michigan was declared a disaster area. Farms lost much money, and many families consequently lost their farms. Democrats won a majority in Congress! Iran Arms Sales created many problems in our nation- Reason lost much respect popularity, while Oliver North's secretary Fawn Hall gained much exposure! The arms hostage swap was sadly unsuccessful, as Iran ' still held hostages, and American citizens in + Iran were still in danger. Tragedy continued in the spring as many people • were drowned by the capsizing of an English ferry, • due to an unclosed door. AIDS scares continued to sock the nation. Many churches began to give away birth control devices, a few colleges supported state funded birth control.!!!!!! QV 4 4 Opening 5
