Spirit Week 11 Elk's Host vmmmmm m Homecoming 1986 featured a major return to tradition. For the second year in a row, there was a Homecoming parade which traveled through downtown Ionia as part of the pre-game festivities. In the play, two elderly ladies, played by Misti Ludwick and Sandy Packard, feel they are doing elderly men a mercy by killing them with poisoned elderberry wine. They are helped by their insane nephew, who thinks he is Theodore Roosevelt, in burying the gentlemen in their cellar. Teddy was played by Steve Pearson. When their other nephew Mortimer Brewster, (Cort Skoog), finds a body in the window seat he thought Teddy killed him. He wanted Teddy to be institutionalized immediately. Then the aunts were paid an unexpected visit by their third and last nephew, Jonthon, (Chris Hopkins) and his friend, Dr. Einstein (Joe Ferguson). Jonthon hadn't been home since he was a boy and he wasn't the kind of person you wanted to welcome into your home. This play was directed by Mr. Raymond Monte and student directed by Darryl Curtis. In charge of lighting was Cathy O'Mally. 5. 1. Joe, Chris, Sandy and Misti chat about old times. 2. Cort and Becky have a lovers quarrel. 3. The Christmas Dance was sponsored and organized by the entire Junior class. The music was provided by WBCH in Hastings. The palm trees which decorated-the IHS gym were donated by Sids Flower Shop. In the center of the gym there was a huge decorated tree, donated by Wilson’s Christmas Trees. Another year, another dance, another success!!!! 1. This play was last performed in Ionia in 1965. The play was directed by Mr. Raymond Monte. In charge of the vocal part of the play was Miss Judy Schnebly. Directing the pit orchestra was Mr. Charles Brill. In this play Professor Higgins is out on an endless quest to study the London language. He meets Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney speaking flower girl that lives in the streets. Colonel Pickering, a linguistic expert, bets Higgins that he can't make Eliza into a proper lady. Eliza wants Higgins help, so she agrees to live at his flat for 6 months and get speaking instruction from him. Mrs. Pierce, Higgins's maid, helps Eliza clean up and pick her clothes so she will look presentable to the public. A nice looking young man, Freddy Eynsford Hill, falls hopelessly in love with Eliza. Mr. Doolittle, Eliza's father, is a comical drunk who lives in the streets. After much work Higgins decides that it is time to test the new Eliza in public. This test turns out to be quite an experience for everyone present. Opening night for the Spring Musical was April 24. No, the change was not the dress code (The tuxes were still rented, and dresses were still fussed over for weeks.) The Junior Class representatives, led by president Sheri Cusack, went to the school board, and asked permission to hold prom in Grand Rapids. Although the switch met with many concerned parental grievances, Prom 1986 (dinner-dance) was held at the Hoffman House in Grand Rapids, on the Third of May, at 8:00 p.m. The dinner selections were Prime Rib, and chicken Cordon bleu, both with veggie plate and salad. Eating with everyone who attended prom was an experience in itself, and we're sure everyone used their best table manners! Carnival, a band from G.R, provided the music after dinner. The prom theme was A Rainbow Romance, with everything decorated in pastels by the sophomore servers. Traditionally, complimentary wine glasses were given to each couple. As always, on Sunday, many couples got around early in the morning and left again, this time for Silver Lake and the sand dunes! With the new arrangements mixed with the old traditions, Prom 1986 was a most memorable occasion. 1. It looks like Jenny caught the bouquet! 2. Tammy Davis and Dave Ward take a break from the action. 3. Sophomore servers relax after a long evening. 4. The Blue and Gold were also convinced this was the ELECTRIC YEAR!!!!_______ Prom 25 High Achievers Honored Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest achievements a high school Junior or Senior can attain. To be selected, students must have a 3.30 grade point average and maintain it throughout their final year of high school. In addition, the students must be evaluated by the faculty in three areas; citizenship, leadership, and service. To get in, one must go through the Initiation activities. Members are also expected to participate in other activities such as the Marathon Dance, which is held to support the Ronald McDonald House. All the qualifications must be maintained or the student is removed from the society. This years officers were President Sheri Cusack, Vice- President Michelle Reisbig, Secretary-Treasurer Chris Sutter, and Student Council Representative Michelle Nevins. The advisors were Mrs. Deb Hagen and Miss Michelle Goodwin. i. 2. 28 NHS 1. Paul Sutter takes a bath for his initiation. 2. First year members. 3. Second year members. 4. NHS 29 Council Has Many New Ideas The Student Council dabbled in creativeness this year. They started the year with homecoming week, as they organized all the activities throughout the week. The student Council moved the Homecoming Dance to the Elks Ballroom for the first time. Mrs. Powell, Student Council Advisor added, The Homecoming Dance was a smash. The Annual Bonfire was held before the Homecoming Game. The council held a winter carnival at Bertha Brock Park in January. Another new idea was the semi-formal Valentines Dance held February 14th in the gym. Another activity this year was the bond issue in which the student council helped out a lot. The passage of the bond issue was one of the high points of the school year. Sophomore Steve Pearson was chosen as the I.H.S. recipient of the Hugh O'Brien Award. He attended a seminar in the Spring. The following met monthly with Dr. Hagerty: Tammy Davis, Jack Powell, Sheri Cusack, Tom Droste, Cindy Cusack, • Steve Pearson, and Shawna Hood. The students had a definite major part on the building and equipment going into the new Senior High School. Student Council President Tammy Davis added, I think the student council had a successful year in planning so many new activities. Advising the student council was again Jan Powell and the officers were: President, Tammy Davis; V. Pres., Sheri Cusack; Sec. Leslie Adams; Treas., Chris Sutter; Corresponding Secretary, Becky Bowne; and Historian, Julie Powers. 30 Student Council 3. FRONT: Marci Gregory, Lisa Boley, Shawna Hood, Amy Croel, Kari Dipzinski. O.M. is a creative problem solving group. There were two teams each team working on a dirrerent problem. The first team consisting of John Shaffer, Jason Coe, Julie Powers, Christina Sorenson, Amy Radigon, Scott Heminger and Katherine Smith. Their problems were Poetic License in which the team chose a poem, Shakespeare’s all the world a stage. They then wrote a parody complete with props, backgrounds and a playbill. The second team was Trish Todd, Sue Ehl, Jackie Roberts, Jon Cusack and Chuck Cusack. This group chose Chain Reaction as their problem. The team had to set up 50 mousetraps and after one was set off the rest would continue to go off and complete certain tasks, such as raise a flag, break a moving balloon, start music, and then 2 free choices. Finally, a bell had to ring to signal the end of the task. The team’s theme was The Swiss Cheese Family Robinson Visits the Big Rat Race New York City!” The team placed 2nd at Regionals and qualified to participate in State Competition at Central Michigan University. This years coaches were 2nd time veteran Richard Tipton, and newcomer Michelle Goodwin. 32 Olympics of Mind In 1987 the IHS Pom Pon squad returned to Ionia and gave the half time shows a creative and energetic spirit The team was coached by two first year teachers, Kelly Beaman and Pamela Morrison. Eight girls made up the squad, with two alternates. The members were April Fisher, Becky Banhagel, Leslie Adams, JoLynn Cole, Jennifer Fisher, Dawn Renucci, Amie Valentine, and Cheri Wittenbach. Alternates were Dawn Shattuck and Janis Sherman. The squad and the coaches all worked together to make up the routines. Music for the routines was picked by the members and used after being OKed” by the coaches. Next year, a squad of 18 girls with 2 alternates is the goal. Languages Make Changes The foreign language classes had a big surprise this year. Starting the year out were Mrs. Deb Hagen as the Spanish 1-4 teacher, Miss LeeAnn Cunningham with French 1-4, and Mrs. Gloria Dryer who taught Spanish 1- 2. When the second semester started, many students underwent a major change with the loss of Miss Cunningham, who decided to further her career in Farmington, Ml, and the loss of Mrs. Hagen, who switched her career from teaching Spanish to becoming a counselor at Ionia Junior High. The new replacement for Spanish 1-4 was Mrs. Deb Butler. She is very experienced in this field, as she spent 6 months in Chile, and recently visited Cancun, Mexico. - The new replacement for French 1-4 was Miss Kelly Beaman. Miss Beaman was also coach of the Pom Pon squad, along with Miss Pamela Morrison, another new teacher at IHS. The French and Spanish Clubs were proud to receive the trophy for the best float in the Homecoming parade for the second year in a row. The foreign language students had the opportunity to purchase sweatshirts and T- shirts with Spanish expressions on them. 1. 1986-87 Ionia French Club. 2. 1986-87 Ionia Spanish Club. 3. These students include two seniors from France, Aymeric Le Juene and Isabelle Guyenot; and two juniors from Spain, Felipe Samaran and Marta Cozar. Aymeric stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Ted Ridders. He was a member of the boys tennis team. In France he plays tennis, soccer, hand- ball and basketball. Eighteen year old Isabelle Guyenot was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Tony Limon and family. After already receiving her diploma in France, Isabelle attended IHS to further her English speaking knowledge and to participate in American cultures and way of living. This winter Isabelle played on the volleyball team. She will return to France in July where she will begin college studying social work or tourism. From Madrid, Marta Cozar was hosted by the William Blundy family. Marta accompanied the IHS Chorus on the piano. In her extra time, she rode with the Ionia Equestrian team. When back in Spain, Marta will finish high school, then go on to college to study law. Felipe Samaran visited us from Spain also. Felipe stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Zenon Cardenas and family. The biggest change was an Apple computer which enabled the staff to type and print their own body copy. Most of the computer work was done by Missy Martin, Wendy Holther, and Tamara Ferguson. The Editor of the yearbook was Wendy Holther, and the Assistant Editors were Jill Robinson and Sandy Packard. Sports were done by Dana Pierson, Kurt Swinehart, Trennon May, Joellen Jesko, and Mary Rozeboom. YEARBOOK STAFF 43 GUYS LEARN ABOUT HOME EC Each year, more and more males are realizing that they, too, need to learn the skills essential for living. The most popular class was for seniors, Living On Your Own. It was designed for students who had not previously been enrolled in these classes. Some of the units included were getting a job, managing a paycheck, learning what it means to be independent, finding and decorating an apartment, and learning to take care of it, and how to shop for and prepare nutritious food. The class also dealt with entertaining friends, and choosing your clothes and caring for them. A large number of males have realized importance food plays in their lives, and have enrolled in the food classes. Here they learned the necessity of good nutrition, as well as learning to prepare good meals for themselves and their families. Only a few brave souls enrolled in the other departmental classes, Child Development, Family Living, Home Furnishings, Stitch and Stir, and a Sewing Class. The teachers hope that even more male students will take advantage of the versatile class offerings in the future. The art department, headed by Mr. Gary Smith, provided Intro Art, Applied Art, and Studio Art. Through the year, Intro Art students worked on projects such as still life drawings, buttons, album covers, slogans for ads, and much more. Second year Applied Art students worked on jewelery, ceramics, and silk screening. Third year Studio Art students worked on wax rings, pendants, polished rocks, and business cards. The art club officers were Pres. Renee Smith, Vice President Jill Seidelman, Sec. Treas. Kelly Koehnlein, and Rep. Theresa Lobdell. The Advisor was Mr. Smith. 1. Ionia High School has a good program to educate students in these areas. To prepare graduates for their career choices, our school district has adopted a two year math graduation requirement. Through academic advising, the math program better served the individual needs of our students. The curriculum insured competency in general and basic math skills, including two algebra options which accomodated our underclassmen's varied strengths, and a complete four year math program for the college bound. IHS competes annually in the Michigan Math Prize competition and a number of our students receive recognition. Mr. Gary Welch, Mr. Don Frayer and Mrs. Kay Springgay were instructors in the Business Department. There are now 22 IBM Computers, three Displaywriters and six Printers along with electronic calculators, dictaphones, a photocopier, time clock and a Merlin AT T phone system in the Office Technology classroom. Office Tech, along with Computerized Accounting are two hour vocational classes for Juniors and Seniors. Typing I and Accounting | are prerequesites for these classes. The marching band shows their discipline as they stand at attention. The 1986 Marching Band started their season by attending band camp at Twin Lakes 4-H camp in Traverse City. The music, drills, and routines learned at band camp were enjoyed by audiences at all home varsity football games. Under the direction of Charles Brill and John Taylor, the band took an entertaining show to their marching band competition at Northview High School. Performing in unsatisfactory weather conditions, the band missed a first division rating by one point. 54 Symphonic Band The 1986 Ionia Marching Band had a good year, as they missed a first division rating at competition by only one point. The band was directed by Mr. Brill and the drum major was Jon Taylor. Many new rhythm instruments were purchased to fill and refine the band’s sound. The Jazz and JV bands, directed by Mr. Andrew MacFarland, had an electrifying school year. The Jazz Band had a full calendar. They toured to the Ionia Public Schools, hosted the District Jazz Clinic, Interlochen instructors came to the school for a teaching session and the band performed for various community invitations. These were only some of the activities performed by the IHS Jazz Band. The Symphonic and Concert Bands, also directed by Mr. Charles Brill, had a year of continuous learning. They spent much time sight reading different music and practicing numerous scales and drills. All of the bands also performed the annual Christmas, Winter and Fine Arts Week concerts. The bands held their annual magazine drive again this year to supply them with the sufficient funds to pay for various expenses. They also started a new sale, flower bulbs and all purpose soaps. 1. In this department Randy Cowling instructed his students on the basics of welding and working with the lathe and other tools. The students worked with many types of metals and did projects of different sizes. Drafting, taught by Ken Trevan, was another class offered at Ionia. There were five different drafting classes offered. These were Beginning, General, Mechanical, Architectural, and Engineering which covered what is in the drafting world today. Every year the Mechanical, Architectural, and Engineering classes enter drawings in regional competition. The top two drawings go to state competition. Ionia has a reputation of having many winners in both regional and state competition. The Wood Shop department offered three classes: Handwoods, Machine Woods I and 2. Mach. Woods 1 and 2 also sent projects to regional competition in Traverse City. The students, instructed by Brad Garrison, start at the beginning of the year on their projects and send them in in April. The major accomplishment was the passing of the school bond issue. Among the people who helped make this all possible were the Board of Education. Members included President Harry Larkin, Vice President Ken Felice, Secretary Richard Hull, Treasurer Dave Pinnow, and Trustees Marshall Nyland, Spiro Mann, and Dorothy Durst. They all worked in conjunction with Superintendent Dr. Robert Hagerty. Principal C. Gary Carlson and Ass't Principal Robert Rood felt they accomplished many things this year. They felt that they recognized the students that did well academically. They also felt the communication with the parents improved, as a result of newsletters sent home every two weeks and articles submitted to the Sentinel - Standard. Mr. Carlson said, This school year was very successful. We hired several new teachers and they blended in well with the rest of the faculty. The Athletic teams had successful seasons while they showed good sportsmanship, which reflects on the school. Serving as Administrative Assistant was Mr. Don Gorsuch, taking care of attendance problems. In addition to this job he was also the Athletic Director, scheduling all the events and getting the officials. 1. Don Gorsuch, Principal C. Gary Carlson, and Asst Principal Robert Rood. 2. Ionia High School did not just run on students, teachers and administration alone; the secretaries, cooks, and custodians were an important part in helping keep the high school running. Doreen Schaffer and Karen Bradley kept things running smoothly in Principal C. Gary Carlson's office. They had to keep the records straight and do other tasks, such as keeping up with the rush of students and answering the telephones. This year Phyllis Powell assisted Mr. Don Gorsuch, administrative assistant and Athletic Director, in keeping the attendance records. Working in the counseling office this year was Marilyn Hofbauer. She helped the counselors who in turn kept the students informed of new programs and activities. Also she was the Athletic Secretary. This year, cooking together to make the lunches, were Sandy Antonides, Pam Bosley, Jewell Rittenburg, Cindy Hartman, Connie Munger, Jane Dipzinski, Jackie Miller, Mary Flint, Mary Bensinger, Gloria Keast, and Anna Guernsey. The custodial and maintenance staff just don't fix things around the school, they also work on keeping the school system landscaping up. Floyd Rogers is the custodian on days while Phil Patterson, Ned Graham, Marty Huntley and David Hawley on nights. The maintenance staff this year included Jerry Selleck and Dan Wagner. Jack Ziegler was grounds and maintenance man while George Whitelock was grounds. 1. Floyd Rogers sweeps the floor in the IHS. 2. Doreen Schaffer would rather sit and talk than finish her typing. 3. Seniors 159 JUNIORS In August, the 1986- 87 Juniors walked through the front door of Ionia High School with some big ideas of how to make their junior year exciting! Most Juniors took a big step in preparing for the future as they took the PSAT or the SAT, both which are required at most colleges. Juniors also had to bear a full year of American History. Many Juniors had the opportunity to join the National Honor Society. The Juniors sponsored the Christmas Beach Party dance in December, and planned the Prom, the biggest event of the year. The Junior class officers were President Kevin Wassom, Vice President Joe Sawtell, Secretary Lynette Swinehart, and Treasurer Trenton Loucks. Student Council Representatives were Cindy Cusack, Mark Roberts, Steve Hallead, Jill Seidelman, and Cathy O’Mally. The Junior class advisers were Elena Spice and Ray Monte.
