Developing socially While acquiring leadership Organizations aid us in working together to achieve a smooth-running school. Each organi- zation has a purpose of its own and every student can find a club or an organization which fits his interests. They provide a way of helping us in getting along with other people by teaching us to understand the wants and desires of our own group. Active members procure self-confidence and poise which mold them into leaders. In clubs as well as classes the spirit and traditions of Ionia flourish. What we learn in the classroom we carry into the club meeting. Each of these activities has its advantages and we benefit from a combination of the two. Ciangi Their Pep and Vitality are Unsurpassecl Action and excitement dominate the gymnasium when the 90 girls in G.A.A. gather for one of the many activities offered them by the club. Constituting the sports agenda for the year were speedball and tumbling in the fall, basketball and bowling during the winter, and softball and tennis for the spring season. In addition, many individual sports were available. Under the direction of Mrs. Susan Shutes, the various teams competed with each other for G. A .A. Bowling This year bowling was one of the most popular sports on the G.A.A. schedule. Eight teams com- peted for the title of I.H.S. championship bowlers. Officers of the league were Barb Stout, president, Sue Hiler, vice-president, and Suzanne Little, secretary. B. Stout, pres., S. Hiler, v. pres., S. Little, sec. honors to be awarded them at the end of the year. Ionia G.A.A. played host to girls from neighboring schools for a Play Day in the spring. They also sponsored a post-game dance November 7 with pro- ceeds going for records and equipment. Sportsmanship and team participation are stressed, but individual accomplishments are equally important to the girls. They are satisfied only when they know they are doing their best. 1.1. Girls become skilled in cooking, sewing, child care, home safety, and the other branches of home- making. The club, sponsored by Mrs. Pat Moore, Mrs. Margaret Janes, and in the second semester Mrs. Janice Amold, had a full schedule of events. New members were inaugurated at a candlelight initiation early in the year. Members attended the Regional Conference in Saranac on October 14 and the officers represented the club at the State Conven- tion held in Grand Rapids in April. The girls made drums for the Co-operative Nursery School. Later they planned a Mother-Daughter Ban- quet and a Mothers' Day luncheon. Their January meeting was centered around a hair stylist from Lansing, whose speech and demonstrations were especially enlightening, a film strip on careers was shown in March, and May brought the annual installation of officers. Money-making projects were a post-game dance, February 27, a dance on May 8, and fudge sales dur- ing the winter months. The girls took time out from their busy schedules to enjoy a hayride. A June picnic climaxed the year. Norma Jean Burke received the award of Ionia High School's 1959 Homemaker of Tomorrow for writing the best examination on hornemaking knowl- edge and attitudes in a test open to senior girls. Future Farmers oi America Learning to Do, Doing to Earn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve The motto of the Future Farmers of America is Learning to Do, Doing to Earn, Earning to Live, Living to Servef' It is an organization of boys study- ing vocational agriculture and its primary purpose is to develop rural leadership. The Ionia chapter, guided by Mr. Harry McMahon, has done a good job in teaching its members about farming and in contribut- ing much to the school and community. One of the main activities of the group was the District Contests on February 11. Teams competed in Parliamentary Procedure, Farm Forum, Agriculture Demonstrations, and Public Speaking, with the winners going to the Regional Contests later in the spring. To aid young farmers in adjusting to their jobs and responsibilities as rural citizens, the Future Farmers planned a series of evening classes and recreational activities for them. Row I: M. Palmer Another community service was the distribution of baskets to needy families during the Christmas season. One of the outstanding seniors, Jim Johnson, was chosen from the fifty boys to represent Ionia at the Soil Conservation Association's monthly meetings. The object of these meetings, attended by one boy from each Ionia County school, was to teach the boys the importance of proper soil conservation methods. Jim also had the honor of serving as Regional Treasurer for the year. Heading the club as president for the 1958-59 school year was Russ Yeomans, a four year member and veteran of many district contests. Assist- ing him in his duties were: Jim Johnson, vice-presi- dentg Max Christensen, secretary, Harry Selleck, treasurer, Herb Brown, sentinel, and Bob White, student council representative. Row 4: K. Ransom Science Club One of the larger and more active clubs at I.H.S. is the Science Club, composed of students majoring or minoring in science. Films, speakers, and demonstrations were planned for the monthly meetings. Members and their advisor, Mr. Gustav Beyer, sponsored two dances, a number of concessions, bake sales, and car washes, and a big Pizza Supper to earn money for their annual spring trip, which alternates between Detroit and Chicago. The group also toured the Michigan State University science facilities, inspecting many of the research projects in progress there. Several pieces of new ra- diological equipmentwere added to the physics lab at I.H.S. this year. It has been said that The question is not whether you win or lose but how you play the game. This can perhaps be called the basic ideal of high school athletics. At Ionia we are proud of the winning record of our team but we are prouder still of the boys who make up our teams. Athletics have become an essential part of our modem educational system which is planned to tum out well-rounded individuals and to provide a means of gaining self-confidence and of leaming leadership. We have at Ionia some of the finest athletic facilities in the state: a new gym, scientific equipment, and prcr tective uniforms. The responsibility for the maintenance of high stand- ards falls directly upon the coaches. Ionia is fortunate to have an outstanding coaching staff, an enthusiastic student body, and a co-operative Boosters' Club. 35 Our Champions -The Pride and Glory of IHS - -ii of' ll J x '- I .!, v . 9 ' 1 l ' ?' .. . 2 ,L-I D' f' f M Y ' if , 1 - . , .ffd : - . .4 , A .. v ' .2 .AJ 1' f I . . Center, Don Burns, Coach VARSITY BASKETBALL The Ionia Bulldogs ended the 1958-59 basketball season in a tie for fourth place in the West Central B Conference, with a record of seven wins and seven losses. Defense was thc bright spot of the season, with the Bulldogs third in the league in this category. Much of the success of the season can be explained by the desire of the boys to win. Because of this Ionia finished with one of the best records in recent years. The cagers opened the season by defeating Lowell, but with narrow defeats by Greenville, Hastings, and Grand Ledge, visions of a Conference Championship vanished. Nevertheless, still hoping to finish high in the standings, the Bulldogs successively defeated Eaton Rapids, Charlotte and Belding. The high point of the season was the second game with Hastings. The Saxons came to Ionia with an eleven won, one lost record, and an eighth place rating among the Class B teams of the state. The Bulldogs came through with a hard-fought and well-deserved victory. Jon Whan was Ionia's leading scorer with 194 points and finished in fourteenth place in the con- ference scoring standings. At the end of the year LeRoy White, lonia's high scoring sophomore guard, was selected for the Detroit Free Press All-State Honorable Mention Basketball team. With the loss of only a few members of the team due to graduation, Coach Don Burns looks forward to Ionia's promising chances for the championship next year. Rudolph The 1958 Baseball Team Although the 1958 baseball season was not termed a success, the boys won a great deal of recognition for their good sportsmanship. They remembered that a good loser is just as honorable and respectable as a gracious winner. Coach Don Burns' Bulldogs finished last in the conference with two wins. The wins were over Eaton Rapids and Alma. Ionia was defeated by the strong team from Godwin Heights in the first round of the toumament games. However, with several regulars retuming this year the prospects for the 1959 season were favorable. Golf and Tennis: The Ionia High golf team came through in fine fashion during the 1958 season by winning five of their seven matches. One of the high spots of the season was Dale Bowerman's placing second in the conference. The 1958 tennis team also had a successful season, placing third in the West Central Conference. They played six matches, one with each conference school except Charlotte. With all veterans but two returning in 1959, coach Raymond Monte was looking forward to a winning season. Row I: L. Throughout our first three years of high school we seniors believed that we would feel a great deal of pleasure and happiness at graduation time. Now that it is here, we have mixed emotions: happiness at the thought of the various new experiences which await usg regret at the thought of losing the close companionship which has served as a powerful mortar of friendship through our high school days. Ionia High School has offered us many advantages. In our senior year we have had to carry much of the responsibility of the student body. We would like to express our appreciation to the members of the faculty and especially to Mrs. Heitman and Mr. McGrath, our class advisors, for all the time and energy they have contributed to our senior activities. These activities began with selling concessions during the football season. Then came the Senior Play, A Visit to a Small Planet, the annual Christmas Party, the Senior Assembly, and finally the publication of The Ionian. At first they were bewildered by the maze of halls and rooms comprising the school and by the strangeness of everything, but soon they grew accustomed to the buildings -and class system and began to look forward to each new day with zest and happiness. They realized the importance these four years would play in their lives and set forth to achieve their goals. The class sponsored a dance after the Charlotte game, January 9, had a booth in the all-school Carnival, and participated in many school activities. Mrs. Baylis and Mr. Griffin, the class advisors, did a great deal towards making these students' first year a success and preparing them for the rest of their high school career. 84 Karen Mketxon Kennetlt -Xtlatr Terry -Mlarnx Gloria -Xilgate Dotlglax ,-Xlhrtght Margaret Alshattgh Daxe .Mere Lou Badtlei Barbara Bailey Duniel Bailey Vickie Harcelow Jerry Batchelor 'loin llaylis Site lieeeh .lane Bennett Pat Bennett Margie Bonn Carole Booth Joan Booth Bob liowcrman Gaylord liroolv, Sandra Brottga Walter Brown David Hughee Gerald Burgtorf Patricia Biirgtorf Iilelora llttrton .lohn Carson Sharon Ciiylor lohn Challender Betty l.oit Chambers Kathleen I hrixman Rtehartl Chrtxtcnxen Dale C ltirli Ronaltl Clayeomh Ralph Cook Bob Corlmell Stephen Croel Randy Cttrtix Nola Dalton Sharlenc Dennis Harlene Dickerson Brian Dolphin Keith Eaton Niarylott Eaton Roger lieltley Judy lrlliott Roger l-rnelandcr Stanley llmshvxtllcr Xlarta lisptnoza Lamont Farrell David Fennell Harhara lrord Stephen Fountain ,lohn Calloway 'Yann Galloway Shari Getxel loanne Gharst Phyllis Graham GC7.tlel GLHCN lerrx Gregory farolxn Griffin Yearl Grtwoltl Shirley Cirttxchtnxki. Getting an early start is the duty of the bus drivers as they prepare each morning to travel throughout the Ionia area and bring rural students to Ionia schools. At noon a large portion of the students rush to the chow line to eat the lunches prepared by the experienced hands of our cafeteria cooks. Their tasty and hardy meals are sure to provide satisfaction to everyone's hunger. The cus- todian staff, headed by Mr. Speckin, begins the laborious task of cleaning up and repairing equipment after the school days have come to a close. All these well-done jobs contribute much to the ease and convenience of I.H.S. students. Row 1: C. Jerrils, C. Speckin, E. Davis, H. Zwerk Row 2: D. Fletcher, G. Gallagher, L. Martin L. Lafferty, N.
