The attractive showcase decorations have included examples of balanced meals, suggestions for inf teresting party themes, and methods of dyeing Easter eggs. At Christmas time the girls busted themselves making boxes of candy for servicef men, and later made soft desserts, attractive salads, and fancy cookies. The girls in the clothing department have worked with cottons, rayons, and wools, and many lovely creations have come from their labors. At Christmas they tried their skill at hanf dicraft by remodeling old wornout toys for small children. Miss Margaret Snow took over the homemaking duties shortly after mid-term. Home EC. club :Wi Gregg speedsters Debits and credits White-Collar Trainees Commercial subjects have an important part and a very essential one in many of the students' programs at this time because of the lack of help in downtown offices. Some students prefer book- keeping, while others enjoy typing and short' hand. Two years each of shorthand and typing are offered and one year of bookkeeping. ln the second-year shorthand class the stu- dents who pass 60, 80, or lOU-word dictattons re- ceive certificates. ln previous years pins were awarded to the students but, because of the shortage of metals, certificates are awarded in their place. The Commercial club was organized October 24 for those students taking commercial subjects. The club met every two weeks. Bonnie Wedder- burn was chosen president, Lucille Lee, vice- president, Martha Hasman, secretaryg and Bar- bara Macklin, treasurer. Seventeen members joined, all girls. Under the supervision of Miss Norris, the girls had a pleasant year. At one of their fall meetings Mr. Frank Kingston presented Commercial club them with a movie and talked about Indians of Florida and their home life and customs. As an all-year job the girls aided the local Botary club by writing letters to lonia soldiers and sailors, giving them information about their home town and sending them pictures and addresses of their friends who are in the service. These patriotic typists were named the Victory club. ln the social line, the l'Commercials' had two theatre parties and a bowling party. ln the month of March, which was pretty breezy, the girls took an over-night trip to Woodard Lake, where they had plenty of fun. To end the year the l'Com- mercialsu journeyed to lohn Ball park in Grand Rapids, where they took in the amusements. Commercial club members at the end of the year were Loraine Kohn, Lucille Lee, Doris French, Lorraine Darnell, Bonnie Wedderburn, Belvey Schroeder, Elnora Minaker, lanice Donal- son, Dorothy Kenny, Marie Coates, Doris Bane hagel, Martha f-lasman, Barbara Macklin, Esther Tafel, and Geraldine Stout. In order to do this, boys are given instruc- tion in soils, crop production, care and feeding of farm animals, and farm management. The freshmen were included in agriculture for the first time this year. They joined the sopho- mores in the study of soils and crop production, making a total of 28 enrolled in the class. The study of the care and feeding of farm animals, offered to the juniors and seniors, is made more interesting by visiting the farms in the locality and judging livestock. The seniors also have a course in farm management in which the busi- ness side of farming is taught. The boys also work in farm shop where they repair home equip- ment, make new and useful things for the farm, and wash, oil, and repair harnesses. During the year all boys enrolled in vocational agriculture carry out projects on animals, crops, or farm placement. Approved practices are followed in these projects and records are kept, The Future Farmers of America, better known as the F.F.A., provided a complete program of work, recreation, and entertainment for 35 mem- bers, under the leadership of their president, Armon Leiter, who in mid-term joined the avia- tion cadets and took math studies to help him in this line, and with the help of their vice-president, Emery Townsend, also an aviation cadet, who assumed the presidency. Other officers were: Milton Hammond, who joined the Navy, treas- urer, Paul Tupes, and reporter, Richard Peterson. ln the FFA. speech contest, Wayne Waldron, with his oration f'Post-War Agricultural Prob- lems, proved to be a very good speaker by win- ning first place in the regional held at Fremont, and placing third in the state contest held at MSC. The speech competition is one of three national contests sponsored by the national FFA. ln the entertainment field were two parties, one in co-operation with the home ec. department and the other an independent St. Patricks Prance. The FFA. took part in the basketball round- robins with Portland and Belding, in which Beld- ing captured county honors. The boys also played a few games with other teams for fun. A softball team for the summer months is being organized to play off a seven-game schedule. The biology classes, too, kept the school hold- ing its sides at the spectacle of dignified sophs chasing moths with butterfly nets and equally dignified teachers chasing the snakes that went A,W.O.L. from the classroom. When Miss Wolfes first hour biology class studied the structure of the human body, they also became very friendly with Minnie, which is the affectionate name for the schools skeleton. Miss Zemkes class tried its hand at dissecting frogs, but not until they had given them such picturesque names as 'tOld Blood'nGuts, Sittin'Bull, and Henrietta . . . All went smoothly in Mr. Morrall's chemistry classes, although several students went without their lunches rather than eat eggs after experi- ments with hydrogen sulfide . . . From the Junior high we inherited the general science class, which lays the groundwork for study of biology, chemistry, and physics. Under the leadership of Mr. Bates, the ninth graders, in order to learn what makes things tick, conducted many ex- periments . , , lf you look long enough, you may find Mrs. Cornells algebra and business train- ing classes either in the foods or clothing labs, or perhaps in the Latin rooml These classes, al- though they too were a legacy of the junior high, contain sophs, juniors, and seniors, as well as freshmen . . . In the realm of higher mathematics we find trigonometry and solid geometry, which are taught in the same class, and plane geometry, Mr, Morrall is the instructor of these classes, which strive to teach the students how to think clearly and how to work with mathematical fig- ures. Some of the boys in these groups will be our future navigators, bombardiers, naval, and artillery gunners - they hope! Vim, Vigor-, Vitality Over 50 girls attended the first meeting of the Girls' Athletic Association in September but the number was shortly cut down to 27 of the more active girls. The G.AA.'s goal is to stimulate interest in girls' athletics and to provide an adequate pro- gram whereby the athletic needs of all girls are met. The G.A.A. is directed by an executive board consisting of officers elected by the mem- bers. President Helen Eddy is assisted by Sue Houghton, secretary, Star Dickerson, treasurer, and Velma Iean Signs, concessions manager. Miss Allaine Wolfe is the GAA. adviser, Awards, which consist of numerals, chevrons, and letters, may be obtained by earning 500 points through participation in team or intra! mural sports, regular attendance, and such rec- reation as bicycling, bowling, skating, archery, swimming, and hiking. Throughout the fall and winter there have been Play ball activities in volleyball and basketball. For the first time in many years the girls' basketball team played outside teams, the girls lost five games and won one but upheld good sportsmanship at all times. Good competition was given to us by the Woodland, Lyons-Muir, and the Sheridan girls. During the spring, softball, tennis, deck tennis, and tumbling were the main activities, with softball being the only interscholastic, com- petitive sport. The treasury of the club was increased because of an enthusiastic sale of hot dogs and candy bars at the football games. As their project this year the G.AA. bought new equipment. The GAA., considering its social events to be an essential part of its program, opened the sea- son with several hikes and an overnight, spon- sored a school party, a sports premiere to open the basketball season, and shared honors with the band for the Pan-American rally, April l4.
