His services, many of which are taken for granted, are truly indispensable. mea! EDITOR'S MESSAGE Last year when the annual was put out by the Taylor Publishing Company, it was the first time in a long while that an annual had been published by a company. Therefore, we felt that it was our duty to keep the good work going and to forge ahead. We have endeavored to make this book of in- terest to the alumni as well as to the present student body and to those in this locality who are interested in us. It is through an 'annual that the incidents of the school year are con- veyed to those not connected with the school. We feel that much of the success of this an- nual is due to the business men and women who purchased advertising space. We wish to take this opportunity of extending to them our thanks for this encouragement. Marilouise Mason if 'Q R. COOK Art Assistant Editor E. TONZI MR. D, WOOD Advisor A. Among the things that they wish to know are: dependability, attendance record, initia- tive to work, and the ability to get along with others, Remember this and start building a good record now. 7dwW MR, ABRAHAM Band Choral MR, BRIGGS Socral Studies MRS, BRYANT Commercial MR, ISBELL Sclence M ath MR. Seadcvz 71641047 Our first day at high school began with twenty-one frightened students comprising the freshman class--six boys and fifteen girls. On Friday, September 16, 1950, our dreaded initiation came, The initiation lasted a week, but it wasn't so bad, even though some of the moments were embarrassing, Gradually we got into the swing of things. Our officers for the first semester were as follows: President ------ Joan Kientz Secretary ----- Cecil Koenig Vice President - - - Nell Johnston Treasurer - - Grace Ann Jennings October 7, we gave the sophomores a freshman retum dance which everyone en- joyed. These were our officers for the second semester. President ------ Cecil Koenig Secretary ------ Jean Kientz Vice President ---- Jean Wilson Treasurer ----- Shirley Watson We could hardly wait for the next year because then it was our turn to initiate the freshman class. We gained four new students: Doyle Johnson, Art Clark, Neva Layher, and Barbara Turner, Election for sophomore class officers showed the following results. First Semester Second Semester President ------ Ernie Del Rio President ------ Bob Woolsey Vice President - - - Bob Woolsey Vice President - - - Cecil Koenig Secretary ------ Joan Kientz Secretary ----- Marie Thomas Treasurer ---- Roberta Custino Treasurer - - - Marilouise Mason The Sadie Hawkin's Dance was willed to us, until the year of our graduation, by the class of 1951. When our junior year began, there were twenty-three students in our class. Junior Class officers follow: First Semester Second Semester E President ----- Barbara Turner V President ------ Bob Woolsey Vice President - - Marie Thomas Vice President - - - Bob Schelly Secretary ----- Nell Johnston Secretary ----- Doyle Johnson Treasurer ------ Joan Kientz Treasurer ----- Bruce Thayer Our junior year was an important one for us, for we had to prepare for the Junior Play, Junior Prom, and Junior Banquet. Our Junior Play was a hilarious performance entitled AUNT TILLIE GOES TO TOWN, a three-act comedy concerning a ludicrous masquerade. Everyone who participated in the play had a wonderful time on stage and at the dance held afterward, The Junior Prom was the most spectacular dance given by the juniors. The dance being held in the Women's Club, the theme of it was Peter Pan. There were beautiful decorations, including a shell-shaped dais for the orchestra, a running stream meandering through the hall, and a bevy of decorative Peter Pan characters, The Junior Banquet featured an expose of faculty and student baby pictures, The long-awaited glory of our last year found all twenty-three of us mature and dignified U1 seniors. This being our last year of high school, we wanted to make the best of it, The theme of our Senior Ball was Silver Bells, which was carried out nicely, Added attractions were a large angel-hair angel and a skier on a snow slope, Officers: First Semester Second Semester President ------ Bob Schelly President ----- Ernie Del Rio Vice President - - - Emie Del Rio Vice President ---- Rosie Cogk Secretary ------- Bill Wise Secretary ------ Bob Woolsey TICQSUICI - - - - Art Clark Treasurer ---- Irene Thompson Seadcvz 65444 pw Greetings! This is your amiable fortune-teller, Swami Phonibaloney, Have a seat while I tune in the year 1974 on my crystal ball--complete with TV aerial and chewing gum dispenser--and look up the class of '54, Ah, it's coming in, but it's foggy - oops, wrong channel. Come, come, my little time machine. Now I have it. Zounds, I see Bob Schelly, the great space conqueror, just leaving the premiere of the movie, l-lepcat, featuring the life story of the famous jazz singer, Ernie Del Rio. As he leaves the theater, he greets his old buddy, Art Clark, the well-known dancing master, whose sensational ballet, The Pink C1odhoppers, stars his newly-discovered ballerina, Jean Wilson. Bill Wise, a professor at Vassar College, is now conducting night classes in cooking, Among his many graduate students is the prosperous lady chef, Nell Johnston. I see several familiar faces in the Who's Who column of the Literary Journal. There's Barbara Tumer, celebrated dime mystery novelist, Shirley Watson, the psychologist, has just completed her 24th book, entitled How to Get Along With Your In-Laws. The great literary critic, Neva Layher, acclaims it Shirley's greatest masterpiece. Art Towle, Life magazine photographer, is busily taking pictures of lovely mink model, Maxine Stacy, Irene Thompson, while not raising show horses with Dick on their 5, 000 acre ranch, is busy raising little geniuses to send to Ione High School. The international tennis champion, Marilouise Mason, recently contributed 515, 000 to a fund--established by humanitarians Jean and Joan Kientz--for under- nourished Australian athletes. Roberta Custino married a millionaire soap tycoon. His company's motto: Chlorophy1l soap for a chlorophyll complexion, The well-known track star, Jim Grover, has just broken the world's record for running the mile . . . backwards! l l I ! Aha! I see a new building on Ione's main street. It is Shirley Bailey's Charm School. Across the street is a gigantic Super-meat-market owned by Bob Woolsey. His engineering course helps him tremendously in cutting up meat. Marie Smith has just made headlines as manager of a foreign sports car race track. At present she is sharing front-page honors with Marie Thomas, the flirtatious actress, who recently divorced her fifth millionaire husband, We mustn't forget Rosie Cook, she has really made a name for herself. She is now assistant secretary of the U, N, Red Tape committee . . . . . I think I'd better leave: they are now conducting an investigation of all red -haired fortune-tellers! CALENDAR FOR THE YEAR This year the Block I Society sponsored a fun night on January 16. Events on the program included toothpick-life-saver, relay and hopping races, the affair was a success both financially and socially. Also the Society co-sponsored with the G.A. A. , the Washington's Birthday Snow Party at Calaveras Big Trees. The Society's sponsors, Mr. Schilpp, Mr. Williams, and Mr. Isbell, were active in bringing a 'Town Team Tournament' to Ione's new gymnasium on March 18, 19, and 20. The Block Society with the G. A. A. had charge of concessions at this event. At the Homecoming Picnic on May 14, they had a ducking booth in which various members participated. The Society also voted to buy the band one new instrument every year from the proceeds. Altogether the Block I Society numbers thirty members of whom eleven earned their blocks this year. ctiuities fn, dfwfww Q EE ' gcwwaefzcckzl 77. 5. sqm .ldlaaaq Spawn! 'S HAVE BEST RECORD IN YEARS The Ione football Mustangs had one of their best seasons in years as they won 5 out of '7 games. Their season started on a low note-losing to Tuolumne by a 21-6 score and ended with a thriller lost to Calaveras by 13-12. I1 between they romped over 5 opponents as they scored 143 points to the oppo- sition's 14 Outstanding were the running of halfback Bob Schelly and fullback Ben Brown, the pass-catching of end Paul Layher, and the quarterbacking of Ernie Del Rio. A prime factor in making such a successful season possible was the big Ione line which averaged 180 pounds. with Jim Grover and Paul Layher at end, Dick Holbo and Tom Grover at tackle, Larry Stroh and Ronnie Hawkins at the guard slots, and Art Clark at center, the Mustangs could almost always count on a hole when needed rx a stiff defense when the going got tough. Superior coaching by Mr. Schilpp and Mr. Isbell was another factor in the successful season. Most pleasant victory was the 33-0 lacing of Jackson in a game where the Mustangs could do no wrong. Most exciting game was the finale at Calaveras when Ione scored their 2 touchdowns on the last play of each half - only to lose by one point. 45 6 13 26 27 I Ione Ione I Ione . Our mainstays on the A team were seniors Art Clark and Bob Schelly, Ronnie Hawkins, a junior, sophomore Paul Layher, and Marcus Johnston, a freshman who beat out some upperclassmen for his for- ward position. Led by Captain Bob Woolsey, along with Brian Bennett, Dave Walloupe, Bob Shortridge, Mike Hasty, and Fred Ybright, the young and unseasoned athletes competed in some games against fierce competition. Although behind most of each game, these boys never once gave up but fought right down to the final whistle. The Ione High School C and D basketball teams played a round-robin schedule with Amador and Jackson. They were unable to win a game, but many of the players who helped on these two teams moved up and played on the B team. Brian Bennett and Bob Shortridge from the C team, Fred Ybright and Bob Thompson from the D team moved up to the B team in Mother Lode competition. The D and C teams are a proving ground for young basketball players. They stress the funda- mentals necessary for keener competition, as it lays the ground work for future years. Winning only 3 while losing 7, the Mustangs were plagued by lack of experience and injuries. Of their seven losses only two were of the humbling variety. 'I'hese were at the hands of the Bret Harte team and the champion Jackson nine. with a couple of breaks in several games, the Mustangs could have played . 500 ball or better. As there was only one grad- uating senior on the team, the prospects for the future are bright. The high Z3 point of the year came in the last game when the Ione sluggers fix combed Summerville pitching for 17 hits and a 23-'7 triumph. A The Mustangs sent Jerry Irvin, the league's best catcher, Ronnie Hawkins, a hustling outfielder, Marcus Johnston, freshman sec- ond base- ' V man who led the team in hitting, and Art Clark, who was capa- ble of f playing almost any position on the diamond, to the All-Star Game at the end of the season. 4 -is Coaching both the Ione Varsity and the All-Star Game was ,I Mr. Isbell. He has tried to give the players more experience, and 'if through his efforts and patience, there are prospects of Ione being near the top of the league next year. Jim, through hard hours of work, was able to compete in the sectional meet to pick two top milers to repre- sent Northern California in the State meet. Jim ran a close second in record time of 4:30.
