• •• 4 5 FR. JIM POISSON Reverend James D. Poisson was teaching in a White Plains school in 1970 when he received a message to contact Iona College. Iona wanted Father Poisson to participate in an experiment — the formation of a Campus Ministry. This organization would minister to the religious needs of the college community and provide a place for students, faculty, administration and staff “to be”, a neutral area. Working with these principles in mind. Father Poisson and a handful of volunteers started the Iona College Campus Ministry program. Seven years have passed since Father Jim returned the message to Iona College. He is still coordinator of this organization — which has grown stronger each year, continuing to serve the Iona College Community. Father Jim aided in the transition when the Ministry moved from a small building on President Street to its present location in Spellman Hall, thus making its services even more accessible. Father Jim has given a great number of Iona students, faculty, administration and staff his never-ending love and dedication to his vocation. He has provided leadership to those misguided, shared his love with all, served each while serving many. Father James Poisson is the paragon of love, virtue, and truth. Y. 10801 Office of the President February 24, 1977 Earlier today I spent a very interesting hour with Jim McNamara, Editor-in-Chief of the ICANN—1977. It was an informative and happy meeting; our conversation ranged over many topics, most of them dealing with Jim’s reflections on Iona and my own. When our coffee cups were about emptied, Jim asked if I would write this brief note addressed to the Iona Students reading this Annual, especially the members of the Senior Gass. He suggested that I might share some of the thoughts which he and I discussed together. I am very pleased to do so. All of us have had some experience of an Iona that is becoming more of what our Alumni and Alumnae have always hoped we would become, while retaining those attributes and qualities which our graduates have remembered and treasured. No single experience is common to us all but perhaps no other activities better exemplify the spirit and meaning of Iona than the “other-directed” works of love which abound here. The Special Olympics Program, the Muscular Dystrophy Carnival, the Appalachian projects, the visits of the Iona Singers to hospitals and nursing homes, the Blood Bank Days, the special liturgies of the Campus Ministry, Senior Citizens activities, Catholic Big Brothers and Big Sisters projects, volunteer work in children’s homes, peer counseling . . . What an encouraging catalog! That special relationship which exists between a teacher and a student at Iona overflows the classroom, and other trusts, sharings, confidences, friendships are formed. From these come the energy and enthusiasm which move people to give of their own power, strength, ability — whichever of God’s talents they share — to the loving service of others. At Iona there will always be much which a student will be able to take away at Commencement. But they share most deeply in the abiding spirit of Iona College who contribute. 178 179 JOHN C.
