It SEARCHES for definition through INVESTIGATION CONVERSATION and Countenance, 4 IIUilM It respects. It tolerates. It SCREAMS and doesn’t give a damn. i Mostly . . . ... it QUESTIONS why it’s been called the NOW generation. To accept the standards of tradition, to promulgate the theory and the practice which have proven to be the most pragmatic and expedient: these have been the committments of past generations. Yet today’s generation has asked that these committments be abrogated by the policy makers and the standard bearers in the liberal arts, fine arts and social sciences; and it is to those who ask for more than continuity and tradition that the responsibility of tomorrow’s world is committed. Observers of this social phenomenon have chosen to label today’s young people as the “now generation” because it is this generation that receives the inheritance of poverty, social disorder and injustice left us by the liberals, revolutionaries and revisionists of the tradition. Social, moral and artistic apathy can no longer be tolerated. We cannot allow labels such as “sensation- alism” or “irresponsibility” to obfuscate honest and much needed icono- clasm. Hope for a better future is now being replaced by policy implemented with action. The responsibility for the future rests in the hands of today’s generation - the excuse of tradition is no longer acceptable. 23 Brother Leo R. Downey, Ph.D. Vice President Brother John E. I want you to know exactly what’s happening. I mean, no garbage included. Just the whole truth! Well, I was walking down the street about a week ago. I don’t remember where I was going, hut I was going somewhere. I was just walking. And I was thinking. About my youth. When I was a kid I used to live in this very town and I used to know a lot of people here. But I moved away and things have changed. I want you to understand that. Things have changed! Well, like I said. I was walking down this street and I was thinking how things had changed. Not just with me, but with the street, too. I remember twenty years ago, when I was a kid, there weren’t so many cars on that road. And there were an awful lot of soldiers walking around. I re- member a lot of things, but one thing I remember best of all was this woman. She used to live on the top floor of a three story building. She was an old lady. Real old. And I remember I never liked her, because she would always chase us kids away from the street. But one thing. Whenever she chased us, I would put up a stink. I want you to un- derstand this. A real stink. And she would get ticked off even more. And so would I. Finally, she’d get a pail of water and throw it out at me. But not until I called her “Mrs. Hinkle Puss.” I don’t even know if she was married. She probably wasn’t, ’cause we never saw a “Mr. Hinkle Puss.” 1 was just a kid then, so “Mrs. Hinkle Puss” was pretty strong stuff. I mean, for a kid and all. Well, let me tell you, I was there the other day. Last week. And when I came to her window, I looked up . . . and there was no one there. Now, this made me feel bad. I mean, really bad. Not just upset, but bad. I was gonna walk away, but I stopped. I had to give it a try. So, like a real kid, I looked up and I shouted, “Hey, Mrs. Hinkle Puss!” But there was no answer. Then, I tried it again: “Hey, Mrs. Hinkle Puss!!” Still no answer. One more time: “Hey, Mrs. Hinkle Puss!!!” (Pause) Then the water came from above like the Great Flood and ruined my new suit. The old bitch! You think she would have had the common decency to move away. But not her. She’s part of the scenery. Good thing, too. Because I don’t recognize much else on that street anymore. BERNIE: Now look Horace, Pve had enough of your sped! I want to know what this is all about, so you can leave. HORACE: Hey, that’s not being nice. I could be tough with you if I want. BERNIE: I’m not looking for a fight. HORACE: I mean it, man! You push Horace Othello too hard and he gets mad. I’m a calm, sensible person, (yelling) but 1 got a temper!! I’ve been in this business for a few years and I’ve come against some of the best and I’ve always come out on top. My mother. God rest her soul, hated me. But she knew one thing. She knew I had it in me to be what I am now. She used to say, “Horace . . that’s what she called me, “Horace, you’re a sly, little bastard. You got the makings of a great private detective in you”. And she was right. I’m living proof to it. And I’m a real, live private detective. Not like these movie characters with their beautiful women and their fancy sports cars and multiple gadgets. No sir! I’m the real thing! BERNIE: Oh, you’re the real thing all right. HORACE: (To Carliit) Lady, you understand? CARLIN: I . . . think so. BERNIE: Her name’s Carlin. HORACE: Carlin?! I had a girlfriend by that name one time. Carlin. (Pause) No, her name wasn’t Carlin. It was ('aria. And she wasn’t my girlfriend . . . She was my bro- ther’s. He married her, too . . . Stupid idiot. Save them—both! What you have just seen was Iona College as it really is. We did not make it that way—you did! We simply take the pictures, you supply the subject matter. Yet we will be the butt of the complaints and scapegoats for your own guilty consciences. A school can be doctored up in the yearbook to look like the typical beehive of activity presented in other annuals, but is it fooling anyone? Perhaps so. It seems that many of the students actually believe what they see in the past yearbooks, but had not the past editors chased after club officers to pose their little groups, there would not be those impressive “activity” pictures. This year was different. The 1968 ICANN is a true representation of the student body. People may complain of an abundance of photographs from the “cliques” on Spellman’s second floor, but if it were not for the students that inhabit those offices until all hours of the night Iona would be void of life. There is nothing stopping anyone from coming up and participating in these activities. Everyone has better ways of running things but no one is ever willing to give up the time—no one except the “clique.” True, there are students who must work their way through school and cannot give their time to anything other than studies. But what of those who support only the beer industries? What of the leaders of the three o’clock exodus? And what about those cliques of students that convene at a cafeteria table for the day to discuss the apathy of the school and never leave their tables to do anything about it? Complaints! Complaints! Do any of them know what it takes to put together a newspaper, or run a student government, or create a yearbook? We of Spellman’s upper floor invite you! Iona is going through a transitional stage. It is attempting to make a real name for itself, but this will be futile unless the nobility changes policy. The administration must come down from its pedestal and communicate with the students. The students are tired of ivory- tower edicts to be bellowed over big brother’s broadcasting systems by those delegated to soil their hands with student strifes. They must learn that armchair financiers arc not the driving force of the school. The student, and only the student, makes the school what it is, and when apathy flourishes as it does, well . . . I can go on for hours but what will it matter to most. To those who are leaving, good luck! I do not know what your memories of Iona will consist of other than your “union card.” To those who remain behind, it is not too late. You are Iona. You will make the difference. It is your dutv to vour school to put Iona on the map. Will you? Or will you carry on the tradition of the Westchester wasteland . . . edd e. snyder Editor-in-chief 1968 ICANN In Ifomnrium Come on people Smile on your Brother Everybody get together Time to love one another Right notv... The editors and staff of the ICANN wish to express their deepest regrets upon the death of the great DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. During the past year there have passed away a number of well known people but none have left an emptiness as void as that left by I)r. King. He was a true standard-hearer for freedom and brotherhood and provided an image for both white and black to look up to in respect and admiration. These words will fade from our minds as will the count-' less other eulogies spoken of Dr. King but it is our sincere hope that his words of wisdom and his hopes for the future will not he forgotten. Words are not needed, but rather action. Love and bro- therhood are not to he merely words but rather ways of exist- ence. Must we always he jolted into realization at the cost of human life or will love, of fellow man flow in steady streams? Will we remember the events of that fateful week or forget until more trouble arises? The question remains as always . . . 6 6when will we ever learn ...
