ICANN IONA COLLEGE, NEW ROCHELLE, N. Y VOL. VI - «ttfrft i., r lia The ICANN for 1951 presents a review of the tenth year of Iona life. on of any college yearbook is to present a graphical review of the life of the college for the period it covers. To do this adequately it must portray first of all the basis of the academic life of the institution, the FACULTY. The annual must pay tribute to those who have reached the goal for which we are all striving, the GRADUA I ES. Then logically it must represent the great bulk of the student bo dy. the UNDER- GRADUATES. The story of the College year is the story of the student body, but to present it pictorially, the annual must portray the year s ACTIVITIES. Iona engages so extensively in intercollegiate A 7 HLE1 ICS that a sep- arate section must be devoted to this activity. Finally in a college with an active student body, many clubs are enthusiastically supported, pro- ducing the need for a section of ORGANIZ.A7IONS. RISC Very Reverend Brother Edward Ferdinand Clancy, LL.D Superior General of the Christian Brothers of Ireland On the second of June. 19 0. Iona was proud to present an honorary degree of Doctor of l aws to one of the most illustrious spiritual sons of Brother I'.dmund Ignatius Rice — Reverend Brother Ivlward Icrdinaml Clam y. In dedicating this publication to him the staff feels it can do no heller than to quote a portion of the it.ition whit li states that the degree was conferrer! for his life long devoted service to the ( hurt li; his outstanding ability as an edurator ami administrator: his zeal in furthering the reputation of the Congregation on every continent, and to mark the esteem of the American Province of the Brothers for his great qualities of mind and heart.’’ I lie citation also made reference to his great work for the Church in Rome as secretory to the Cardinal in charge of audiences w ith the Rope and as a staff member of the Vatican Secretariat of State. In 1801 In dec ided to s| en«l Itis life bringing Christian Doctrine and learning to tlie poor waifs of Itis homeland and secured ecclesiastical | ermission to initiate his gre.it work. Joined by two zealous youthful companions. Mr. Rice officially ojtened the Mount Sion House at Waterford, on May I. 1801. Young under privileged Catholics Hoiked to the school in droves. On the feast of the Assumption in I80S. seven companions took lcm| ornry vows of poverty, «hastily and obedience. In 1822 there were thirty-five brothers present at the first general chapter of the llrolhi •rs id the (‘hristi an Sc bools of Ireland. At this time, the rules and regulations of the new congregation were drawn up. perpetual vows were subs rihe«l to. and Brother I-.. Ignatius Rice was elected Superior Ocneral. C onditions in the early s« hools were not always condin ive to su « cssful effort. I here were as many as two hundred eighty pupils under the care of a single brother and no memlrer of the community had less than one hundred fifty under his supervision. As late as ISIt) there were seven hundred pupils under two brothers at the Francis Street .school. In addi lion to its ordinary teaching work, the C ongregation conduc ted night sc hools and even begged for the Irenefit of the orphans of Limerick. With all these obstacles, the Brothers’ pupils received such a superior education that they captured an overlarge percentage of the annual govern- ment awards for sc holarships. I he national school hoard raised its stand arcls to give the classical schools a chance, and the following year the percentage of Brothers students securing passes, exhibitions and medals increased ever further. Realizing the vast field open to him. Brother Rice always sought to extend his holy work throughout Ireland, throughout F.uropc. throughout the World. In spile of numerous obstacles placed in their path by the British government, by Irish Protestants and by the exigenc ies of finance, the Brothers always extended their labors as far as | os ihle. Before the death of Brother Rice in 1841. the C hrislian Brothers had twenty-four establishments stretc hing from all points of Ireland, to Gibraltar, to Eng land, and even to Australia. Brother Rice’ s work was like a pchhlc dropped in a hike, wliic h caused ripples to spread to the shores of the lake and up its tributary streams. I he twenty-four establishments, seventy brothers and eight thousand pupils under the Congregation when the Founder died have since increased to two hundred forty houses with more than two thousand brothers teaching over one hundred thousand young men on every inhabited continent. What began as a tiny mustard seed continues to grow and hear good fruit. ?! ’ ecotneth a irec i i i ARTANT. - The Boy Town ol Dublin, whnr tlic IWini tnfr lor rlfkl hundred homelm )vun(ilr«. It is forcibly demonstrated in the diverse fields of work in which we find him engaged in the hours when he is not in school. The students work to earn their tuition or for spending money or in some cases to acquire valuable experience. This experience, gained at the same time as their formal education, gives these men a much better start when they go ubout the business of earning a living in a competitive world after graduation. In the following pages, a typical cross section of Iona men at work will l e presented. You will see a store manager, a news- stand attendant, a baker, a gravedigger, camera store manager, florist, child counsellor, a | oliccman and a steelworker. These are only a few of the many that could be taken. Iona men are also Pinkerton detectives, ballet dancers, photomic rographerv carpenters, band vocalists and musicians, printers, and are engaged in so many other lines of occupation that even listing them would he difficult. A glance at the men in these pages will show you a microcosm of Iona. 'I here are clay and night students, men in every department of the school, men in each of the four years, veterans and young men just out of high school. I hey all comprise a good picture of the mythical Mister Iona , in his extra-curricular occupation. 62 L _____________________________________________________________ Applying llir principle he learn .1 n xophomore buci- ne «Indent ut «iIhmiI. RICTREAT UME I he religious activities of any Catholic college center about the Religion and Philosophy courses in the urri ulum. but the voluntary, extra-curricu- lar work of the students forms a militantlv power- ful adjunct to these. 1 his outside work has two co-equal aspects, personal sanctification ami mis- sionary work through Catholic Action. The high point of personal sanctification is at- tained through the annual retreat. For a three day period each fall. l ooks are forgotten as an experi- enced retreat master guides the students in a period of self searching during which great graces are bestowed. I he Catholic Action program is under the direc- tion of the Xational hedera I ion of Catholic Col- lege Students' campus representatives. Under the overall direction of the NFCCS delegates, the Catholic Action Group arranged a series of speeches by prominent Catholic laymen, initiated a daily rosary campaign in the chapel, issued a booklet explaining NFCCS activities and organ- ized several active committees and commissions. Reorganized this year under a new constitution, its work was so outstanding that it was the only men’s college of the twenty-three New York-New Jersey regional members to be awarded the top rating of Very Good.” Iona holds the hamilv Life Committee commis- sion for this region. I Inn group has organized a panel discussion series which was presented at many member colleges. It works together with the Ionian to publish the Family I.ife Supplement ' which is distributed to every college in the region. I hrougli the efforts of the committee, over three hundred pamphlets have passed through the rack in Ryan Library. I he Catechetical Groan now brings religious education to over five hundred public school pupils in six parishes. At Christmas the thirty-five mem- bers of the group arranged for rosaries and ineduls to be given to each of their pupils. Other Catholic Ac lion committees inc lude the I’.ducation Committee. whic h has helped in the publication of the regional education bulletin; the Liturgy Committee, which compiled and dis- tributed a folder describing the ceremonies of I loly Week; the Mariology Committee, which spon- sored a contest for poetry on the Blessed Virgin. Jumbo Lyons is the most versatile man on the squad, working either from the pivot or on the outside, and is a great shot, rehounder. and defensive player. I wo sophomores. ED CROKE Visit lima t'ol■ •; in . w lto« li ‘ll4‘ A friend of ours drove by the house, and on our way to the office he took us through the picturesque entrance of Iona College in New Rochelle. This is not much more than a couple of hefty brassie shots from our front door, but it was our first visit. We crossed a football Held which Iona I’rep also uses. At the end of the held we entered O'Connell Memorial Gymnasium. It was named after an Iona College student and athlete who was killed in World War II. We were impressed by its cleanliness and college atmosphere. There were close to 200 students sitting in the gym. They were watching Jim McDermott, the basketball coach, put his squad through the paces. Oft to the right, as we entered, sat assistant coach Artie Wilkins and his freshman squad. They were waiting for the varsity to finish so they could occupy the floor. No Smoking signs were posted and the open windows allowed the athletes sufficient fresh air to keep them alert. Our friend pointed. There is the basketball team that won 21 out of 23 games last season. There are roughly 77S rated teums in the United States. These ranked 115th. This is better than any other college of equal size in the entire New York area. How much space did they gel? Very little. Hut the boys played their hearts out and enjoyed a really spectacular season. You don’t see many quints win- ning 21 out of 23 in any league. Iona, we learned, was founded only 10 years ago by the Christian Brothers of Ireland. Since its inception, it has been respected both athletically and academically. The president of the college. Brother Arthur Loftus, organized and coached the first basketball team. He doubled in that duty for six years. Students must keep up their grades to remain on the varsity. Eligibility rules are strict. Coach McDermott believes good students make good basketball players . . . It is a game of quick reflexes. You need speedy men who are fast thinkers. In a lightning flash a play develops. In the same fraction of a second a defense must form. These boys automatically make good students. McDermott is one of the finest young college coaches in the coun- try. He is u coaches' coach. He is a strict fundamentalist. He spends a lot of time on little moves most coaches assume their players perfected In high school. McDermott takes no chances. When a boy first conies to him. he starts from scratch. The same goes for his assistant. Artie Wilkins. From what we saw of Wilkins, we'd say he would be a big improvement over some of the big varsity coaches we have observed in training. “This year's schedule is murderous for a small college, but unlike football you cannot get a dangerous physical beating in basketball when you go into higher company.” said McDermott. We play Ford- ham. VHlanova. Boston College. Seton Hall, Siena and clubs of that caliber. My boys are not worried over any of their highly-touted opponents. In fact, their big worry has been how to get big ones on the schedule.” On our way out we met Brother Richard B. Power. He is the Director of Athletics. He also doubles as a biology professor. He had just finished a heavy class schedule and was ready to spend what was left of the afternoon taking care of the many details connected with Iona's expanding athletic program. What do you think of your first visit to Iona. Jimmy? CroKK-Coiiufrv Team lifts 1-0 lt« ‘or«l We said we were impressed. Then we asked about other sports. Well, we have an undefeated cross-country team. It is handled by our new track coach. Howie Bulger. They won four out of four. Howie is a real topnotch track coach. We consider ourselves lucky to have him. We also Held teams in baseball and bowling. In baseball we had a great year. One of our pitchers. Vito Valentincttt, graduated last June and was promptly picked up by the White Sox. Vito had a good year in the minors and is on his way up to the major leagues. “Our finances are the problem. They do not permit us to go into such expensive sports as football. Iona has come a long way. in a few short years, thanks to the hard work of the faculty and to chaps like McDermott. Wilkins and Bulger. A whistle blew signaling the end of varsity practice. Immediately the floor filled with eager, handsome youngsters. They were the freshtneu. Shortly we left, tooled our station wagon through the gate, and headed down the parkway toward the big city. As we drew, we thought of Tufts. Colby. Bates. Trinity. Rowdoin. Adelphi. Hofstra. St. Michael’s. Wagner and many similar small schools. We felt sure we would be equally refreshed and inspired by a afternoon at any of them, a day similar to the one spent at where groups of hard-working coaches and conscientious pro- were busy equipping growing young men academically, spirit- and athletically for the outside world. jlM l-VONS 157 I lie Photographer j Catches the I ense Moments High oimI low. lie floats tlirougli tlse air ... . i |Juy Jiuk ? The Student Council is the principal organ of student government. It is elected annually by the students, and the council in turn elects its own officers. Its duties include the assigning of dales for extra- curricula activities, the general adminis- tration of organizations, regulation of on- campus parking, coordination of activity meetings to permit students to participate in as full a program as possible. During the year a new student council constitu- tion was submitted to a popular plebiscite and overwhelmingly approved. Several new clubs were approved, notably the Metronome Society and the Poetry Club. I he constitutions of several other groups were changed to meet new conditions. T he evening session's council engaged in a similar program, and each enjoyed a suc- cessful and fruitful year. The Invitation Dance Committee is directly responsible to the Student Coun- cil. IQQ DRAMATIC SOCIETY Up lo tliis year there have l een o nly I wo publications on the campus — 7 he Ionian which report a weekly record of events and THE 1C AW which com prises a historical review of the year’s doing . I he arrival of a cpiarterly on the Iona scene gives the school a complete family of publications for the first time. I he Inna Quarterly made its dehut this October with some trepidation: there was fear that the output of the various types of writing to Ik covered would not he sufficient to produce an acceptable l ook. I he fears proved lo he groundless—the magazine became larger after the first is- sue and it contained material of an ex- ceptionally high quality. Poetry, drama. Satire, biography, the short story, criticism —all came (muring in from tfie student IkkIv in profuse amounts. This successful publication is well on the way toward lie- coming a great Iona tradition. hr Ionian, the weekly newspaper, con- tinued to maintain its high standards. I'or the first time since 10-18 an issue appeared without the name of I lerliert Malacli on llu top of the masthead. I lerh influence had sue h an impnc I in the development of every phase of Tito Ionian that we might well bestow on him the accolade of Mr. Ionian. Me graduated in January and was effectively succeeded by Donald Colucci. 7 ic Ionian inaugurated a Saturday Iona C ollege Radio show over New Ro c belle's V(’ XR in mid winter and its well planned and well received program provided valuable publicity for the Col- lege and experience for the students. 7he Ionian campaigned for greater c oo|ieralion with our sister college. New Rochelle, with gratifying success. I he I'amily Life and ('alliolic Aciion supplements were successful new features.
