Simpson Presideni Vice-Pferiderzl Secretary Treaxurer Advixor Student Council Much credit for the success of the Student Gov- ernment this year must be given to the leaders of preceding years for their great job of reorganizing the government. The first of several Student Government spon- sored activities was the choosing of cheerleaders for the past football season. The leaders were chosen by the students in a special assembly held for this purpose. A combined Iolani-Priory dance in November at the Central Union Church Parish Hall was next on the agenda. This was the first dance of its kind and was made a success by the hard work of com- mittee members and advisors. Spirited work by members of the Council, its advisors and students who had the benefit of the school in mind have made the Council the working body that it is. Steffen Class of '49 The class of '49, under their capable advisors, Miss Steffen and Mr. Wilson, has been instru- mental in contributing to the life of the school. Their capabilities and enthusiasm in all lines of endeavor were outstanding. Feelings of friendliness and understanding pre- vailed throughout the year. The students have accomplished a great deal, and in doing so, have established themselves as future leaders. Scholastically as well as athletically, they have done a commendable job. They have reached an all important crossroad in life. Here at Iolani, they have been built into strong Christian individuals- spiritually, mentally, and physically. As the youth of today, and the men and leaders of tomorrow, they bid a fond and sincere aloha to their cherished Alma Mater. HAROLD W. ALOIAU Attendance 12 yearsg jr. If a boy applies the golden rule in his daily activities, he has learned the most important lesson that kindergarten has to offer--that of living with other people. A morning in the kindergarten presents a number of diversified activities. During the activity period, each child is allowed to do whatever he pleases, be it coloring, painting, playing with blocks, sliding on the new slide, or sawing wood. In the conversation period the children tell any news or show the class things they have made. They gain self-confidence in speaking before the entire group and also learn to correct faulty speech habits. Story telling and drama- tization stimulate the imagination and help to give the boys a rich vocabulary background. A keen sense of rhythm has been developed in every boy through rhythmic activities, toy orchestra and choral speaking. Motor coordination has been strengthened through rhythms and handwork. The kindergarten has aimed to give each boy a wealth of experiences which will prove valuable to him in his school career. Through participa- tion in the varied physical program, the students cultivate the qualities of sportsmanship, fairplay, and teamwork. Carried through into later life these basic qualities of Christian character will make us better citizens of the community and the world. Education without common sense and phys- ical health would be incomplete and lacking in vitality. IOLANI-25 MCKINLEY-14 The Crimson Tide, making their 1948 debut, scored an impressive 25-14 victory over the McKinley Tigers. A determined Iolani eleven, well drilled and well condi- tioned, outclassed the prep champions of 1947. The Red Raiders blocked with pre- cision and tackled viciously. The Nuuanuans took a 13-7 lead at the half, Han taking the first touchdown across on a 2 yard smash and a 10 yard Hoater pass from Napoleon to Ho capping a 68 yard drive for the sec- ond. In the second half with the score 14- 13 in favor of McKinley, McKillop took a reverse from Napoleon and neatly sidestep- ped and outsped the Tiger secondary to go 35 yards for a touchdown, thus enabling Iolani to take a 19-14 lead. A few plays later, Watanabe intercepted a deflected pass and galloped 18 yards for the final tally as Iolani chalked up a well earned victory. , y,',,,wmy.:'55ff - fa , Q .V FIRST ROW: R. Makishi, H. Iolani opened the game with a powerful running attack and scored after four minutes of play with Napoleon carry- ing the mail over on a 9 yard end sweep. Six minutes later an interception setup the second Raider marker, Han climaxing the 46 yard drive with his 4 yard scoring plunge. But Farrington's offense broke loose in the third quarter. With Kahoonei, their passing wizard, throwing strikes to his receivers and Garcia ripping off consistent gains, the Govs racked up three quick touchdowns to go ahead 19-12. Then they dug in to stop Iolani's desperation drive in the dying mo- ments of the game which found the Raiders just one scant yard short of a touchdown and a possible tie. Seto on his way for a big gain. ' 5 . 1' -- -Y IOLANI-26 ROOSEVELT-6 Playing headsup football enabled Iolani's spirited eleven to register its second straight victory at the expense of the Roosevelt Rough Riders. In the first half, Han re- covered a blocked punt in the end zone, McKillop intercepted a pass and scooted 71 yards to score, and Hanchett caught a Roo- sevelt fumble in mid-air and raced 22 yards to pay dirt as the Nuuanuans led 26-6 at the half with Han converting twice from place- ment. The second half was even until the last Z4 seconds when Han squirmed 24 yards over tackle for the last tally. The Raiders played a methodical waiting game, letting the Riders make the move and then pouncing on them for the win. V, ry .14 sv-Kg:-,N Ripper rips through the Gov's line. IOLANI-0 KAMEHAMEHA-20 Using their superior weight to great advantage, the 1948 Champions of Kam dis- played power to defeat a plucky Iolani eleven, 20-0, on a wet and slippery turf. Crippled by the loss of Han and Almadova through injuries, the Crimsons played a waiting game, punting on third downs. But the breaks didn't come their way this time. Without Han, Iolani's running attack bog- ged down and the slippery ball made pass- ing difhcult. Iolani's staunch line played a stubborn game, yeilding ground grudgingly. Although outplayed, the Raiders were far from being outfought. IOLANI-14 KAIMUKI-12 Iolani, beaten in a previous game by Punahou's point after touchdown, converted twice to give them a two point margin of victory over the Kaimuki Bulldogs. Harold Han, our hard driving fullback, kicked both conversions which enabled the Raiders to emerge on top. The Raiders scored both of their touchdowns in the first ICH minutes of the skirmish, while the Bulldogs punched over their tallies in the second and fourth quarters. Napoleon circled right end from the one for the first score and McKillop, in a deceptive three way handling of the pigskin, took a reverse and rambled 35 yards for the second. Only the persistence of Iolani kept the Bulldogs from pulling an upset. The game was one of the cleanest of the entire season as there was'only one fraction of the rules, that being an olfside penalty called against Kaimuki in the third period. Stopped for no gain. .1-Lan 38:2 'nl E IOLANI-6 PUNAHOU-7 The Red Raiders of Iolani suffered their third consecutive defeat with a heartbreak- ing 7-6 decision to the Buff and Blues. Iolani outplayed Punahou through most of the hard fought game, halting the feared running of Billy Heilbron and the dangerous aerial assaults of Dave Eldredge. Nursing a 6-0 lead with 25 seconds remaining in the half, the usually conservative Nuuanuans gambled on a fourth down pass that resulted in a Pun touchdown. Wilson of Punahou pluck- ed the aerial from the air and scooted 61 yards to score. Ane then spelled defeat for the Raiders as he booted the extra point. The Crimson Tide had enjoyed an early lead on Napoleon's 12 yard end sweep into the barn, but the conversion was blocked. Iolani played one of their best games of the season Y a 'J 41 4, , Gangway! Paoa passing to DeFontes for 14 yards and Akau crossing from the 9 accounted for the Saints' two tallies. Then they added two more points on a safety in the hnal period when Iolani's backfield muffed a snap from the center. Behind 15-0, Iolani roared back with Han driving and spinning his way 8 yards for the Raiders' lone tally. The year's final statistics revealed that the Crimsons led in the kickoff department with an ave- rage boot of 44.5 yards. The Raiders also were the best when it came to fumbling the least.
