Circus Reproduced by Ollene Steele Ladies and Gentlemen: May we offer for your kind indulgence our' human effort Which tells in the language of the lots, life among a blue-blooded class of people With Whom we have had many days of pleasant associations. In this language, we, the Lamp Staff of the lola High School, with its many performers, side shows, acrobats, clowns, and strange animals of the midwest, present our three rings from the red wagon to the backyard. For us to mention here all sources of data or to name all individuals Who have so kindly responded might seem invidious. Deserving credit and sincere appreciation must be given to the circuseseRingling Bros. cX Barnum CS: Bailey, Datley Bros., and Cole Bros., and to Tedd A. Meyer, Iola's own enthusiastic circus fan. To our Board of Directors, Equestrians and Train- ers, and Barkers of the Side Shows, a thousand times Thank You. And to the Junior College we extend a most hearty Welcome and a Thank You for a grand finale-- our top is big enough to cover all. We hope you will enjoy lola's Greatest Circus of '48. The Staff On one November night acameraman set out to take a picture of the Board of Education of the lola Schools when much to the surprise of many, he found them playing with the animals at the circus. Really, it made for a grand settingeThe Board of Directors of lola's Greatest Circus of 48. It is the Board of Directors of any organization that determines the basic policies of that organ- ization. So it is with our circus; it is our Board of Directors that determines the basic policies of our show. This guiding group consists of six elective members, the superintendent, the clerk, and the treasurer, the latter being appointive members. Naturally, our Board of Directors do not spend all of their time with the business of the show. It might be said that during the time they are in winterquarters they engage in other businesses. Pictured from left to right we find Walter Maudelin, linotypist at the lola Register, our sen- ior member who has given nine long years of untiring service as a director; I. W. Ostenberg, Superintendent of Schools, a new-comer in our midst, who has served our show the past two years; Charles L. Wilson, President of the Board, an independent oil and gas distributor, owns and operates a service station on North Washing- ton; Mack C. Colt, an independent oil and gas producer; John L. McNally, another showman in the oil and gas business, operates a Sinclair Service Station on East Street; Walter Crick de- votes his vacation time to the lola Milling Com- pany; C. L. Hoyt, Vice-president, also an inde- pendent oil and gas producer; and Ella M. Jen- sen, Clerk of the Board of Directors serves as Secretary to Superintendent Ostenberg. gquestrian Vectors I. W. A glimpse into the back yard of our circus reveals a most Vital part of any show. A well- fed personnel makes for a good performance. Not only food but the home-like atmosphere plays another important role. Everything that is good and fair,- Where truth and love and security and faith will be realities, not dreams, is the foundation upon which our cooks tFuture Homemakers of Americai are constantly build- ing. From early morn till late at night we find a continuous labormalways cooking, always serving, always pitching tent, and always load ing and unloading on another lot. -320471 0759 On the road this year were: Esther Ashley, Shir- ley Brown, Glendora Cloud, Marlene Crocker, Barbara Croley, Carolyn Duggan, Sylvia Ebert, Margaret Edwards, Dora Lou Folkner, Ioanne Foster, Mary Alice Fraser, Ioan Gilbert, Elsa Goodner, Mary Hallam, Connie Higginbothan, Marjorie Hiser, Betty Hoffmeier, Phyllis Hole- man, Carole Krause, Eleanor Martin, Lenora Mc- Clanahan, Evelyn Morman, Patricia Rabon, Beth Remsberg, Edith Renner, Naomi Runer, Anita Scott, Mary Margaret Shebanek, Ioan Sponsel- ler, Betty Tasche, Bonnie Thornbrugh, Marlene Trowbridge, Elizabeth Wade and Dorothy Wil- liams. QM yam! A well-fed personnel depends, too, upon the supply from agriculture. Organized vocational training, a definite part in the life of any Future Farmer of America, aids materially in the kind of a performance you see in Iola's Greatest Cir- cus. Not only do these showmen work hand in hand With the cooks, but they see that every- thing is in best condition. A broken wagon wheel or a bar in the lion's cage, or even a sudden outbreak of fire is not a task too large or small; they have a most important act to do and it'is another task well done. Traveling from lot to lot were: Loren Broughton, Marvin Buckner, Arlen Carpenter, Bob Carter, Verle Delaplain, B111 Eastwood, Dick Fraser, Larry F udge, B111 Heffern, Charles Heffern, Iohn Heffern, Edwin Heiman, James Hamilton, Marvin Eden, Gerald Kaufman, Charles Kelley, Robert Kelley, Edmon Kidd, Bob Kuestersteffen, Delmar Lorance, Bill Mentzer, Donald Murray, Harley McDaniel, Ronald McDonald, David Sherrill, Billy Starr, Gene Tomson, Ioe Trainer, Arthur Turner, Charles Uitts, Albert Walters, Gene Westerman and John Wright. ,leia C9414 CZCfOAats H.
