Glau Jloiic-fuf It was back in August 1946 when 34 green freshmen climbed up the hill to start their four years of study in lola High School. After a few days Elsie Lewison and Eleanor Klepps joined our class thus bringing our enrollment to 36. During the year Joan Davis and Martin Beyers- dorf left us. As usual we received our traditional welcome, better known as in- itiation. The party was held on September 7, at which each of us per- formed our stunts and were treated to a lunch. Our teachers during our freshman year were: Mr. Mork--principal and General Business, Miss Cleaves--English, Mr. Krienke--science, Mrs. Knutson--citizenship, Mr. Peterson--commercial and band director, Mrs. Mortenson --vocal. As we started our sophomore year we found Delores Hanson, Kermit Taylor, Durane Roloff, Edwin Carley and Eleanor Klepps had left us, but we gained two new members--Dorothy Austin and Frances Heald. During the year Irma Grauvunder left us. All the teachers were the same as our freshman year except Mr. Kit- ze had replaced Mr. Mork as principal, Mr. Peterson was replaced by Mrs. Wrolstad in commercial work and by Mr. Weber as band director. Due to illness Mr. Weber was later replaced by Mrs. Weiler. When we started our junior year we found Sally Brekke, Harold Zell- mer, Francis I-Ieald and Marion Mickelson had left us. We now had the small total of 26. During this year Donna Fietzer and Lyle Peschke left us' The biggest event of our junior year was the Prom which was held in honor of the Senior class on April ZZ, 1949. The theme song was Under- neath the Arches and the music was furnished by Duke Janda and his Or- chestra. The gym was decorated with pink, nile green, and white stream- ers . The theme was carried out with an arch effect. The king, Donald Olson, and his queen, Elsie Lewison, led the grand march. The attendants were June Roe, Charlotte Aronson, and Lois Morrison. Our Junior class play, Girls are Like That , was presented on Feb- ruary 3, 1949. Those in the cast were Shirley Bergen, Charlotte Aronson, Mildred Narlock, Doris Solberg, June Roe, Shirley Winkler, Sid Ellingson, David Nelson, Arlo Olson, and Elsie Lewison. i We started out in our senior year with an enrollment of Z7 but during the year Luella Georgeson and Bonnie Schmidt left us bringing our total to 2.5. As our senior year draws to a close we look back on the pleasant mem- ories of our four years spent in lola High School. T' - 'V Li-U., . CLASS WILL The senior class of 1950 was gathered together to make out their last will and testament. Each one had been told to have something to give to the undergraduates as a token of their esteem. The first one to volunteer after a long, long wait was cute little June Roe, who off- ered to give her dimples to Betty Peschke, since Betty already had some and would probably like some more. Now Russell Kolden raised his hand, saying that if June wasn't scared of being one of the first to. will something, he sure wasn't, and said he would will his dancing abil- ity to Russell Bergen. David Nelson's voice sounded next with his offer to give his old Congressional Records to Margie Schmidt--he hoped that she would be able to get through at least ONE of them. There was a short silence and then Donald Dineen clicked his fingers and exclaimed that he was willing to give his ability for cracking such timely little wisecracks to LaVern Olson. Donald Olson said Joan Voie could have his Al Jolson voice. Avis Knutson spoke up next by offering her blue Mondays to Marilyn Wright--and then Elsie said she'd leave her cheerleading ability with Betty Jones. Ailo Olson said he was willing to leave his I Love You notes to Billy Smith, provided Billy use them sparingly. Then Dor- othy Austin raised her voice above the hubbub of the room and said she was leaving all the days of school she missed to David Grove, hoping he would have as much fun as she did. Her pal, Phyllis Beyer said she was going to give her studying ability to Walter Byersdorf. Shirley Winkler, Lila Aasen and Mildred Narlock all got together and decided on Shirley's getting rid of her giggles by giving them to Jean Thompson, Laila willing her dainti- ness to Ronnie Tschurwald, and Millie giving her good times up north to Dorothy Knutson. Albert Weinmann spoke up next, and said he was willing his curly hair to Gwen Dain and added that he hoped she would appreciate it. Eugene Nassen said he was willing his jealousy to Donny Mork because he didn't need it anymore. Sid Ellingson gave all the seniors a big smile and said he would give his ability to flirt to Jerorne Strand. Lois Morrison rose and said sweetly that she couldn't will anything because she had already given it to Eugene. Then Doris Solberg spoke right up and said she was going to give her speaking ability to Joan Winkler. Next, Art Thompson raised a hand most sorrowfully and said he would give his Ford to any- one who felt they could keep it going. Stanley Sever son offered all his persistance to Dick Hungerford with best wishes. Donna Forseth stood up very shyly, and said she would give some of her shyness to Nancy Smith. After Donna sat down, Shirley Bergen and Charlotte Aronson said they were willing to give their duet-ability to lris Louison and Lee Meyers. Joyce McKellips wills her friendly smile to Gordon Flaata, and Gene Her- manson willed his ability to get along with Mrs. Knutson to little Hank Sol- berg. The next thing this happy bunch of seniors did, was decide on what to will the teachers. This is the result: To Miss Cleaves, they left a big garbage can to throw all the old love magazines away in. Miss Hines was willed a jet plane so she could get down to Milwaukee so much quicker. and a new laboratory and electric dishwasher were to be given to Mr. Krienke. To Mr. Deikroeger, they left their shorthand and bookkeeping books in the fond hope that maybe HE could decipher them! The seniors decided that a cover was to be given Mr. Whitinger since so many ping-pong balls had nearly been dissolved after landing in the open acid jar. Mr. Bizer was willed all the excuse slips they forgot to hand in. Mr. Stephan was left some basketball players like Claude, Russ, Don, and Ubby. Mrs. Testin was willed all the blue notes the band hit during the music Tournament and Mrs. Knutson was willed another student with as much talkativeness as Gene Hermanson. THE END qi .1 -. The gast of Characters: Howard Brant, a senior at Brookfield College--Sidney Ellingson Ed Burns, a chemistry student--Donald Dineen l Vic Lewis, an art student--David Nelson Lou Herron, a journalism student--Shirley Bergen Mrs. Spangler, the landlady--Doris Solberg Anne Purcell, Howard's heart interest--Charlotte Aronson Vivian George, Vic's heart interest--Mildred Narlock Henry Purcell, Anne's father, a rich manufacturer--Albert Weinmann Phoebe Purcell, Anne's mother--Elsie Lewison y Maude Corey, Howard's spinster aunt from California--June Roe Professor Virgil Bean, of the zoology department--Donald Olson Dr. Dixon, President of Brookfield College--Russell Kolden V SYNOPSIS OF PLAY While Ed is experimenting with his substitute for dynamite, and Vic sets up his easel'and brushes, Howard Brant types frantically at his zoo- logy term paper. He will graduate the next day if he gets the paper in on time. But to add to his difficulty, all the graduation turmoil and visitors do not help his powers of concentration. The first upheaval occurs when Mr. Purcell arrives. Forgetting that they had promised him a room in the house, the boys mistake him for an eccentric artist's model whom Vic is expecting. Having been warned that the man may be somewhat erratic, they find it necessary to gag and tie Mr. Purcell to make him pose. When released, lVlr. Purcell not only withdraws himself from the scene, in fury, but withdraws also his offer, to present a new science building to the college. Another crisis occurs when Howard's Aunt Maude arrives and discovers that he has not passed his Zoology course. Posing as a famous zool0giSt, Aunt Maude meets Professor Bean and begins her campaign to get Howard out of college. With this sort of co-operation, the young people decide to put on an act to get Mr. Purcell to renew his offer of a new science build- in . g One emergency after another arises until, with one final explosion, the curtains close .... Obviously there is nothing lethargic about this kind of spring fever. lf you haven't hafl your attack of the disease yet, you'V6 missed part of your education. .wawv w,,.. K ' rm-,1 . .4 , . 4 ws.
