“CLASS HI TORY In September l939 forty children with tear stained faces were pulled into the first grade room They were greeted by the warm smile and cordial welcome of Miss Frances Hemphill, now Mrs Dave Wood Of the eighteen in our Senlor Class the following began that year together Bllly Fleet, Cecil Coleman, Bill Day, Earline Mayhall, Baby Sis Melton, Jeanette Price, Erma Joyce Logan, and Fay Wilson After this year of more tears than smiles we entered the second grade There we had our first real desk Mlss Ara Mullens, now Mrs Hunter Pratt, started the year however, she gave up and Miss McDowell, now Mrs will Price, won the glory of teaching us the A B C's and above all to wrlte lnstead of print Miss Evelyn Kennedy, now Mrs Dean Newell, as our instructor During this year we had our flrst taste of geography and larger doses of spelllng and arithmetic In thls year two of our present seniors Joined us, Evelyn Hughes and Frances Jones Miss Lillian Gunnels, now Mrs W A Hunter, was our fourth grade teacher During this year we learned more about conduct in the classroom than anythlng else fConfide,ntially, Mr Combs has to refresh our memories about this subject quite often I Up to the fourth grade all our teachers were fortunate enough to marry men in Inverness, maybe so they could stay to see if we ever finlshed school In the fifth grade Miss Leona williams drilled Being quite wise in the third grade, we had into our thick heads every state in the United States
