Barker became Commanding Officer of the INTREPID after serving as Commanding Officer of the USS WHITE PLAINS IAFS-4l. Captain Barker enlisted in the Navy in i945 under the Naval Aviation College program as an Apprentice Seaman, and served at the University of California, Berkeley, the Naval Air Station, Seattle, and at Oregon State University until ordered to flight training in l948. He was appointed an Aviation Midshipman in May I948, and was designated a Naval Aviator in December I949. Captain Barker's first duty assignment was with VA-ll5 at North Island flying A-I Sky- raiders, as an Aviation Midshipman until commissioned an Ensign in May l950.0ther assignments include: Ass't Combat Information Officer, USS LEYTE KCVS-32l, Aviation Safety Officer, ASW Officer, Operations Officer, VS-3l, VS NATOPS Desk, Navy Tactical Doctrine Activity, Washing- ton, D.C., Executive Officer and Commanding Officer, VS-37, Commander, ASW Air Group 57, the CVAXCVW Warfare Desk in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, and Commanding Officer, USS WHITE PLAINS CAPS-lil. Captain Barker attended the General Line School at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, the Combat Information Officer's School at Glenview, the Aviation Safety Officer's School at the University of Southern California, the Air War College, and UCLA. During his Naval career, Captain Barker received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with seven gold stars, and the Navy Commendation Medal, while serving with VA-ll5 aboard the USS PHILIPPINE SEA ICVA-475 during l950 - l952 and the Bionze Star while Commander ASW Air Group 57.
