'Ns THE FIRST TIME Anouuo... In February, 1966, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, Robert S. Mc NAMARA, told a Washington news conference: In order to maintain the attack car- rier force of Vietnam, we are... deploying one of the Atlantic-based carriers, the INTREPID, to Southeast Asia. l'Very minor modifications are required on this vessel to permit it to operate light attack aircraft and it can be quickly reas- signed to its anti-submarine role. What is involved mainly is a change in the aircraft complement. The anti-submarine air group is being retained in the active fleet, thus giving us the capability to operate the car- rier as a CVS on short notice. Mr. McNAMARA's announcement pointed up the singularity of the assignment-for the first time, a CVS, an anti-submarine war- fare aircraft carrier had been assigned the role of a CVA, attack carrier, without per- manent redesignation to that status. And... On May 15, 1966, a new chapter in lNTREPlD's history was begun, when, for the first time in 20 years, aircraft from Carrier Air Wing 10 were hurled from the deck of the 'XFIGHTING l to strike the enemy.
