Baseball At Interstate SUMMER 1962 - SPRING 1963 Conducting successful campaiglns in both the summer of '62 and the spring of '63, the Travelers baseball team chalked up an envia le record of 20 wins and 5 defeats, including two Sectional Tour- nament titles. Since the Interstate 35 High School became a reality, the baseball Travelers have won 38 games and lost just 8, with four consecutive Sectional crowns. Featuring long ball hitting, good pitching, and steady defensive play, the Travelers gained vic- tories over such teams as Adel, Rippey, and Indianola, while Clearfield and East Des Moines proved to be too much in tournament lay. MARILYN PETERSON CATHERINE BELL MARTHA STUART Girlsf' Softball Team Compiles Good Record f P f After only two years of competition, the Interstate 35 girls' softball team made a commendable showing, turning in a IO and 5 record and advancing to the semi-finals of the district tournament be- fore being eliminated by Van Horne 18-17. The girls won the sectional tournament at Bedford with victories over Diagonal, East Union, and Leon, getting excellent pitching from Catherine Bell. These victories also featured timely hitting and tight fielding by the entire team. Interstate crushed Pella Christian 15-3 in the first round of the district before falling to Van Horne. Seniors on the team included Marilyn Peterson, Catherine Bell, and Martha Stuart. Leading hitters were LaDonna Kirkpatrick, Martha Stuart, Therese Bell, and Carmen Morris.
