lIriiters1tate's Girls' Season Exciting For Players and Fans f f f This year's girls' basketball team was a pleasant surprise to many Interstate fans, as they finished the season with a record of 10 wins and 10 defeats against good competition. Although short in stature, the girls were long in competitive spirit. In tournament play, The Travelers won their first sectional game with a come-from-behind victory over the Clarke Community girls. Although their shooting and all-around play in this game were not up to par, the girls deserve a lot of credit for this victory because it takes courage to keep battling when things aren't going smoothly. ' In second round play, the team demonstrated their best ball of the year, and knocked off previ- ously unbeaten Martensdale-St. Marys 48 to 47. The Travelers led all the way, and survived a last quarter drive by Martensdale to gain the tournament finals. State Tournament bound Southeast Warren proved to be too much for the third time this year, however, and pounded out a 52 to 34 victory in the Sectional finals. The girls layed Warren on even terms in the second half, but their 30-16 halftime lead proved to be the fatal bllow. Advancing to the District Tournament at Osceola, The Travelers fell before a tall and talented Ankeny team in the opening round, 57-43 to end the season. Four senior starters will have to be replaced when the '63-'64 season rolls around. Marilyn Peterson, who thrilled fans with her long shooting and 702, accuracy from the free throw line, and Catherine Bell, who led the forwards in rebounding, will be missed along with the speed and sharp passing of Martha Stuart and aggressive play of Doris Alexander in the back court.
