Rushmore. Also, probably most of us will travel to the East to view the many monuments erected in our nation's capital. Along the way, on our travels, we will see many smaller, lesser-known monuments--but none the less memorial. These are the school buildings, built brick upon brick, stone upon stone, in honor of the living, growing members of the community. The newer school buildings, or monuments, are not so easy to see along the highways. They have no bell towers, no second and third stories. They are broad at the base with room for all who come. They are symbolic of our present-day beliefs in education--a solid foundation upon which to build lives, and branches out from the fundamentals into areas of specialization to meet the needs of each one. Our TRAVELOG '63 Will show you how the school community of Interstate 35 progressed this year, building not in a material way, but nevertheless building the lives of its young people. rr CAI 9 We Dedlicate Our Book To The Builders Uf Monuments In appreciation of the many sacrifices of our parents, our friends, and our neighbors, and their continuing efforts to provide for us an education of the highest quality, we dedicate the INTERSTATE TRAVELOG '63 to the adults of our com- munity. For your labors we are sincerely thankful and appreciative. May we, in our journey through life, establish new monuments that will re- flect with credit upon the devotion you have shovsm us. May we, as individuals, join with you, the community, in the effort to establish in this school district a monument to education that will be the pride of all who live hereg and to those passing hy, a symbol of our service and love. 51 RAT! 45-gi llinterstate School Board Mr. Dowe Loomis, Northeast District, Mr. Frank Barnard, Southeast Districtg Mr. Loren Kale, Southwest District, Mr. Dwight Downs, Northwest Districtg Mr. Rudolph Willis, Member-at-Largeg and Mrs. Charlotte Stickel, Secretary. In 1953, the industrial arts shop, the science laboratory, and two grade rooms were added on the south. During the summer of 1962 a football dressing room was erected, and the former study hall was remodeled into a library and one class room. High School Principal In the second year of the re- organization, Mr. Larry Pollock, Principal, had the task of coor- dinating the new, to us, sport of football and declamatory with our many other existing activities. New class members were Dixie Dobson, Ruth Kennedy, Judy Shutt, Larry Warren, Linda Warren, and Donald Young. The class enrolled at Interstate as Juniors, twenty-five strong. Pat Warden joined here. Those who started to Primary together and are graduating together are: Charles Stills, Elaine Harris, Doris Alexander, Roderick Page, Paul Crawford, Martha Stuart, Neil Snider, Steve Forman, Galen Slye, David Leachman, Eric Lundby, Lucy Jones, Eric Schaffer, and Marilyn Peterson. That same fall of '59, the Freshman class of Truro High had an enrollment of twenty-three students. They are: Linda Bulkeley, Jerry Clarke, George Jones, Janet Mease, Roxalee Muselman, Jeff Patterson, Gary Phillips, Bonnie Smith, and Carol Evison. At St. Charles in 1950, twelve bright little youngsters started Primary, and of that group David Lathrum, Russel Strawn, Theola Bedwell, Nancy McDonald, and June Schnoor have stayed together to be graduated from Interstate in 1963. Marilyn Cunningham entered during the year. Catherine Bell and Norma F ollowwill came in the third grade, and Wally Seibert arrived the next year. Milton Moore Was Our Commencement Speaker J I A highlight of the Commencement Exercises was the talk by Principal Larry Pollock: To the Seniors may I say, Remember this--Be good, but not too good--a little naughty, but not too naughty. Say a prayer if you feel that way, say damn if it gives you consolation. Be kind to the world always, if possibleg yet, if you must be unkind, smash right and leftg get it over and forget it. Smile, always smile, have a smile ready even though sometimes it hurts. Grab all the happiness you can--whenever you can -- wherever you can--don't let even a wee bit slip past you. Live, above all things live. Don't simply exist. If you are blessed enough toknowwhat real love is, love with all your heart, soul, and body. Live your life so that at any hour you will be able to shake hands with yourself and try to accomplish at least one thing worthwhile each day. Then, when your nights come, you will be able to pull up the covers and say to yourself, I have done my best. Mr. Loren Kale, President of the Board of Education presents diplomas and offers congratulations to graduates Catherine Bell and Jerry Clarke, as Principal Pollock reads the class roll. I Class Prophecy Georgia Zittrauer, alias Dorothy Kilgallen, reported the latest gossip of the 1963 Seniors of Interstate 35 last Sunday night on her broadcast. Georgia said Janet Mease finally got married, and changed her name to Mouse. She said, l hated Meases to pieces. Russel Strawn always claimed he hated girls, but the Bible said, Love thy enemy, so that is what he does. Since Roxie and Larry made such a good couple, they now run a children's home, and take care of 85 kids, besides their own quads. That class was full of enterprising people, who are making their way in the business world: Roderick P. and Marilyn P. own the P. 81 P. Midni ht Auto Supply with the slogan, You need it, we'll steal it. George J. is makingiis living sell- ing one-piece bikinis at the South Pole--a scanty living, though, while David and Martha are on the carnival circuit running, roving crap games. DeVon Woods has gone behind the Iron Curtain to open a bar er shop. Carole B. and Norma F. have crossed the border into Canada, where Carole operates a busy funeral home next to the hospital where Norma is the head nurse. Those famous singers, David Leachman and Steve King, are barkers for the Dipsy Doodle Dollies Shows. Since Vernon K. worked so hard in his childhood, he now plays around in his own pool hall. June Schnoor is a bar maid there. Quite a few of the class of '63 are in Des Moines: Don C. is chief paddle tester forafirm supplyingischool principals, Marilyn C. and Linda Bulke ey are co-partners in a key clu g while Monty Morris is trucking garbage. His motto still is, We care for our freight. Although they swore they would never do it, several students became teachers: Galen S., mathematics at Interstate, Eric L., Home Economics at Podunk Center, Alvin Vickroy, longhair music at Fort Madison, Jerry C. at Arthur Murray's, where his whole course is based on one idea: Step on your own feet. Wally S. always claimed he would clean up around the school if he were the principal, and now he does--as janitor. Some of the class stayed down on the farm, like Dave Ballard who sleeps away the daylilght hours in the house, while Linda does the field work. Henry H. is running a c icken farm for all Cool Chicks and Chick Daddy O's. Pat Warden just married a rich Iowa farmer, and looks just as young and beautiful as when she graduated. Well, why shouldn't she, with all her servants waiting on her. Donna Kennedy Denly is busy raising a large family, and plans to someday set up housekeeping in the White House. Behind every great man is a great woman, and behind Steve F. there is Doris A., who drove him to be mayor of Medora in his spare time. Roger MCC., a part-time farmer, is also in politics. He's mayor at Truro, busy enforcing the midnight curfew. ' Several of our class have roamed far and wide: Charlie S. joined the Navy to see the world. Sherry S. went to the Congo to bleach the natives' hair, using her own secret method. Rick W. went on' a world tour, just to get away from the multitude of women chasing him. Carol E. and Gary P. are owners of a kangaroo farm in Australia--a business that grows by leaps and bounds. Jim Holland, still wonderfully graceful, is giving lessons to bunnies, and Bonnie S. now gives tennis lessons at that Podunk Center School. Theola is employed as ski instructor at Mt. Hoochekooche, where business is slipping. Professional athletes include Neil Snider, playing razzle dazzle basketball with the Globetrotters. Paul C. is now competing in the Olympic games, trying to break his own high jump record of 3 ft., 2 in. Catherine Bell, retired, is coach for the World Champion Tiddly-Winks Teamg and Bill G. is playing fullback for the Green Bay Packers, and is really knocking them down. Danny T. didn't let his education go to waste. He's running a bicycle repair shop out on the Interstate. Sandy S. is the best teacher at Sorenson's Health Studio,. and is currently promoting Lucy Jones as a woman wrestler. Eric S. works there, toog he's a chiropodist, whose motto is, Do it yourself. Mr. Elben can be proud of that all-around musician, Jeff Patterson. He can be seen on Friday nights, playing harmonica and singing along with Mitch. Mr. Long reports that Nancy McDonald has been engaged by the Kennedys in Washington to teach singing to Caroline and John, Jr, Looks like they all made good. 5 W! Paige, the little neighbor girl distributed Father's love letters to Mother all over the neighborhood, so now he is really in trouble, especially after my speech on prohibition that I gave at the school assembly. What a mess! but with the aid ofa fake robbery, facial mud, and a few other antics, Hildegarde has a REAL DATE IN LONG PANTS--Freddie: Father's job is more secure than , , ever, the Dolsons and Shermers are closer friends, and all ' ' ends happily for Hildegarde and Freddie. Mr. Larry Pollock Student Council The student council is an organization of students, elected by students, to serve as their representatives in matters that concern the entire school. The council provides a medium through which student opinion may be heard, and it serves as a forum for the consideration of common school problems. The main purpose of the council is to encourage the prac- tice of good citizenship. Other aims are to promote better understanding between students and faculty, create better school spirit, and promote better scholarship. This large group of people got off to a very good start by conducting advertising sales i n their local towns, then moving on to the nearby county seat towns for additional support. Re- corders were Carmen M o r r is , Marilyn Cunningham, and Donna K e n n e d y. Treasurers were Danny Tracy, Norma Followwill, and DeVon Woods. In the early spring the group sold subscrip- tions at school a nd throughout the district. The secretaries at the St. Charles and New Virginia buildings help- ed greatly. Throughout the year S a n d r a Schamerhorn, Editor, and Donna Kennedy, Assistant, have worked with the advisor on copy for this book. David Leachman, Sharon Fitzgerald, and Janet Jones took pic- tures of school activi- ties. Typists included Janet Jones, S ha r o n Fitzgerald, Georgia Zittrauer, and Sheryll Weeks. Baby Picture Edi- tor was Theola Bedwell, and Norma Followwill was Senior Sketches Ed- itor. The class histories were written by Martha Stuart, Roxalee Musel- man, and June Schnoor. The Juniors in charge of compiling the Senior Class Prophecy were Allen Stalter and Charlotte Campbell. Various members of the staff wrote copy for the activities they participated ing and many of the students helped with the identifi- cation of the group pic- tures. Officers of c ubs gave us information concerning their activ- ities. The staff is indebt- ed to Mr. Gunnar Towne, of the Woltz Studio, Des Moines, and Mr. Loran Lewis, of the Interstate Studios, Sedalia, Missouri, for the group pictures. Both photog- raphers were very gen- erous with their time and talent. Travclog '63 Staff FIRST STEP: Sherry Stevens, Elizabeth Howard, Georgia Zittrauer, Pat Woods, Violet Cunningham. Football was introduced as an interscholastic sport to the school and the school communities. Being a new sport to all the athletes, football was a real challenge to the boys and the staff. The past season represented a lot of hard work, and we believe a measure of success. The squad gained invaluable experience, and intends to improve in 1963 upon the 1962 record. 1962 RECORD 48 Southeast Warren . . . Showing gradual improvement from week to week, the Interstate '35' gridders won their first victory against a scrappy but outmanned Murray eleven. Injuries placed a shadow on the last two games, but the boys will be out to avenge these defeats next season. The school would like to express its appreciation to the many new fans who followed the football team this year. Although short in stature, the girls were long in competitive spirit. In tournament play, The Travelers won their first sectional game with a come-from-behind victory over the Clarke Community girls. Although their shooting and all-around play in this game were not up to par, the girls deserve a lot of credit for this victory because it takes courage to keep battling when things aren't going smoothly. ' In second round play, the team demonstrated their best ball of the year, and knocked off previ- ously unbeaten Martensdale-St. Marys 48 to 47. The Travelers led all the way, and survived a last quarter drive by Martensdale to gain the tournament finals. State Tournament bound Southeast Warren proved to be too much for the third time this year, however, and pounded out a 52 to 34 victory in the Sectional finals. The girls layed Warren on even terms in the second half, but their 30-16 halftime lead proved to be the fatal bllow. Advancing to the District Tournament at Osceola, The Travelers fell before a tall and talented Ankeny team in the opening round, 57-43 to end the season. Four senior starters will have to be replaced when the '63-'64 season rolls around. Marilyn Peterson, who thrilled fans with her long shooting and 702, accuracy from the free throw line, and Catherine Bell, who led the forwards in rebounding, will be missed along with the speed and sharp passing of Martha Stuart and aggressive play of Doris Alexander in the back court. Short on size but long on fight, the Travelers finished the season with a seven and ten record. Neil Snider led the team in rebounds and was a good team leader. Galen Slye was the leading scorer for the 1962-63 season, averaging 16.3 points per game. Monty Morris was probably the most improved player on the team, and he and Rick Williams along with Snider and Slye will be sorely missed next year. Since the Interstate 35 High School became a reality, the baseball Travelers have won 38 games and lost just 8, with four consecutive Sectional crowns. Featuring long ball hitting, good pitching, and steady defensive play, the Travelers gained vic- tories over such teams as Adel, Rippey, and Indianola, while Clearfield and East Des Moines proved to be too much in tournament lay. Monty Morris ran the 100-yard dash in l 10.5 on two different occasionsg Dave Smith ran the 120-yard high hurdles in 16.3, and the 440-yard relay team composed of Morris, Phil Strawn, Smith, and Don Coleman ran 47.6.
