Maty Ritchie left June 25 with Dorfstetten, Austria as her final destination. A short stop in Paris, France and a five day Language Orientation Camp in the Alps preceded her final destination. After leaving the Language Camp, Mary was the first of the 16 students and two Austrian chaperons to get off the train. As Mary waved goodbye to her friends, she made herself a comfortable seat on her luggage and sat down to wait for her Austrian family. While in Austria, Mary lived with the Koglgruber's. Her father was a farmer, forest warden, and an inn keeper. Her mother was a housewife. Her brothers and sister included Peter who was 12, Wolfgang who was 10, Christian who was 8, and Karin who was 6. Mary helped in the inn, in that she made beds, cleaned rooms, served meals, and was also a barmaid. She not only met the peo- ple but worked with them, thus giving her the opportunity to learn more than just surface characteristics of the Austrian people. Peter Svensson's home — Laholm, Sweden. 24 A typical Austrian house. Miguel Assenza's school — Santa Fe, Argentina. The church where Hayden is buried. Miguel Assenza'sfamily. Our two exchange students this year were Miguel As- senza from Argentina, and Peter Svensson from Sweden. As members of the senior class they enjoyed all possible activities during the year. Surprise parties were given for both boys on their birthdays. Miguel and Peter also played intramural soccer, and Peter was president of the Ski Club. Miguel and Peter wish to thank all the people who have made their stay here enjoyable. Miguel is 18 years old and came here under the Ameri- can Field Service Program from Santa Fe, Argentina. Santa Fe is an average size city of 250,000 inhabitants. Miguel's family in Argentina is composed of his father, his mother, his 15 year old sister and his 10 year old brother. Miguel's father works as an accountant and his mother as a teach- er. The High School that he attended in Argentina was a private school managed by the Brothers of La Salle. Mig- uel stayed in Norwood with the Bates, his American fami- ly. He felt they were a really wonderful family and en- joyed living there. Miguel invites you to visit him in Ar- gentina, the land of the sun, the best beef, the good wine and the beautiful women. Peter Svensson is from the small Swedish town of La- holm. He is 17 years old. There are six people in his family, his father and mother, his 22 year old sister, his 21 year old brother, and his little sister who is 13. Peter's father owns a brewery in his town, and his mother is a housewife. Peter studied here under the Rotary Exchange Program. He had three host families — the Morgans, the Foxes, and the Teufels. Peter also invites you to visit him in Sweden if you are ever in that area. Homecoming Queen And Court STANDING: K. Frantzen, B. Klimczak, 1969 Homecoming Queen, L. Campbell, C. Pren- dergast, L. A look at this year's record was enough to disappoint the most stalwart student. But anyone who was present at the games would agree that this year's team was much better than their record shows. Many of the games the Bucs lost were lost by a touchdown or less. This football team provided the student body with plenty of excitement and fought with a burning desire to win. Although every player played an important role there were a few standouts. Of the 16 seniors there were four who did a really fine job. These were Co- captain Bob Morton, a fine tackle both offensively and defensively; Co-captain and quarterback Gary Mayer who displayed fine leadership on and off the field; Bruce Costa who scored 42 points, leading the team in this category; and finally least in size but big as a yard gainer, Bruce Tuffy Teufel. Bruce proved good things come in small packages. Also there were two juniors who played well this year. They were Mike Vanaman, who made 2nd team All Delco and Karl Schumm, Coach Corner also did a fine job. Co-captains for next year were chosen at the football banquet. They are Mike Vanaman and Karl Schumm. VARSITY INT. OPP. The 1969 Varsity and Junior Varsity Hockey Teams, accom- panied by brave Miss O'Malley, invaded Mount Pocono Hockey Camp in August — and came home triumphant and ready to get to work! You would have to play these girls to believe their physical conditioning. (Ask any of the Cross-Country fellas!) The season was highly successful with records to prove it, but Coach Troiano says the team should have gone unde- feated with all the talent available. One thing for certain — the Varsity will long remember the Harriton team who put the only blemish on an undefeat- ed season! Captain Gerry Gray did a great job leading the team and Marie Hanna was outstanding at right half-back, as was Jan- ine McWhirter at left full-back. Returning Varsity players plus a fine Junior Varsity team coached by Miss O'Malley hold promise for a great 1970 season. 54 VARSITY INT. OPP. Captained and led by Paul Wettlaufer the Bucs captured first place in the Delaware County Championships, second place in the Section II and III Championships, eighth place in the District I Championships and a second place in the Chichester Invitationals. Paul Wettlaufer had an outstanding sea- son establishing course records on two away courses, his own home course, and the sec- tion championship course where he cap- tured first place. Other outstanding seniors were Don Wettlaufer and Ed Morris who battled for the number two position on the team all year long. The prospects for an outstanding team next year are good with returning Letterman John Throckmorton, Joe Wilson, and Dave Ritter. Adding to this strength is an impres- sive sophomore J.V. team who went unde- feated (10-0), won their section champion- ships and recorded a shut out in every duel meet. 57 TOP ROW: Mr. May, Coach; J. That balanced scoring attack, which prevented its opponents from centering its defense on one girl, con- sisted of Gerri Gray, Lynne Sheldon, and Carol Larson. These girls contributed many points to each game. Marie Hanna and Nancy Conlin took turns at the fourth offensive position and both contributed sound- ly to the point total. The mainstays of the fine defense were stationary guards Kathy Hoppes, Denise Reese, and Janine Mc- Whirter. Their rebounding and shot-blocking was a big factor in all of the victories. A very big asset to this year's team was a fired-up, spirited, undefeated Junior Varsity that kept the Varsity players in constant competition for their starting posi- tions. They totally dominated almost all of their oppo- nents except for a real squeaker with Nether Provi- dence. The reasons for their success were first of all. Captain Lois Radcliffe and Sophomore Vickie Mandras, who did outstanding jobs on both offense and defense. After scoring a basket, they would many times steal the ball back before the other team could get it down court. Janet Moore had plenty of scoring punch and Sandy Solomon proved extremely valuable in clutch situations as demonstrated by her winning basket in the closing seconds against Nether Providence. The defense must also be complimented with Florence Machette, Karen Begley, and Donna Renshaw sharing those duties with real poise. The future for next year looks bright with plenty of competition for those starting Varsity positions. 63 STANDING: Mr. Burke, Aide; C. Peyre-Ferry, G. McGrath, R. Menna, P. Wilson, S. Barrar,). It is the type of sport which teaches self-confi- dence and self-discipline. If you have ever seen one of Interboro's matches this year, you know this to be true. The Wrestling team of 1969-1970 was one of the smallest yet best teams in the league. Our schedule was unquestionably one of the toughest in Delaware County. As you can see by our schedule most of our matches were with schools of a much larger size. Despite this handicap the team has turned in an admirable record. This record was achieved through team effort and a great deal of outstanding individu- al displays of desire. For instance, Ed Porter, our 154 pounder, broke his ankle during an early season practice. Shortly after his recovery and during our match with Nether Providence, he reinjured his ankle. However, due to his courage and desire he went on to win the match. We also lost our 180 pounder and were forced to give each of our op- ponents 6 points due to the forfeit. We are exceptionally proud of three of our outstanding seniors. Bob Morton, at the time of this writing, had a 15-0 record. He has pinned nine of his opponents and won the Penncrest Christmas tournament. Dave Clark, 138 pound alternating co-captain, has a 9-3 record. Joe Van Wyk, 154 pound alternating co-captain, has an 9-1-2 record. All three men are strong contenders for sectional titles. Coaches Hostetter and Duckenfield would like to extend their sin- cere appreciation to Dave Burk for his invaluable assistance through- out the entire season. Also Janine McWhirter, Claire Houpt, Sharon Hummel, and Judy Haines who were members of our first Girls Wres- tling Auxilary who provided statistical and announcing services. J. Haines, C. Houpt, J. This is the first year that the Bucs have competed against other schools in gymnastics. The squad was mainly built around Juniors and Seniors. The schedule this year included: Connestoga, Springfield, Ridley, Penncrest, Norristown, Upper Darby, and Pen Argyl. Next year's squad shows promise with a number of Freshmen and Sophomores moving up. Although the Buc gymnasts are only one year old, they have grown in leaps and bounds. l f Rifle Team Goes To States TOP ROW: L. Robinson, M. Heisner, B Schwartz, W. Sheppard, Mr. Geno, Coach; G. This year's rifle team, under the superb coaching of Mr. Geno, is very optimistic about winning the State Championship again this year. With many of the same shooters who were on the number one team last year, along with a new supply of sophomores, the team is sure of clinching the state title for the 1969-1970 season. Although Mr. Geno has no associate coach this year, he re- lies on his four co-captains. These four seniors have been members of the rifle team since they were sophomores. As sophomores, they witnessed second place out of four teams at the Pennsylvania State Rifle Championship. As juniors, they were a part of the state winning team. As seniors, they hope to leave the team with the title of State Rifle Champs of 1970. As in the past, they will do their best to make the team number one. Not all of the credit can be given to the four seniors. There are other members of the team who have also made the team so successful. Without the juniors and the sophomores, the team would not be complete. Both the juniors and the sopho- mores are also looking forward to competing in this year's state championship, as well as in next year's. Although the season is not completed, the team has been very successful so far and have hopes of being number one again. 68 RIFLE SCORES INT. OPP. Indoor is a mis-leading term, because practices are rarely held indoors. Many times the dis- tance runners can be spotted anywhere in Delaware County and usually all members can be seen freezing through a workout on Leon Ave. Their efforts do not go unrewarded, however, be- cause this year's performances have been generally better than those turned in last year. Many individual records have been broken. Paul Wettlaufer, our classy state finalist miler, has lowered his indoor mark in the mile by some 8 seconds. Ted Johnson, a tireless per- former, has broken his record in the two-mile by 4 sec- onds. Matt Hutchinson, our premier timber-topper , has lowered his hurdle mark by 7 of a second. Shot Putter Bob Morton, the Section II champ, has broken the record by 3 feet, and high roller Mike Vanaman has tied and will surely break the record of 5'8 . Our sprint relay team, made up of combinations of the fol- lowing men, have erased three records; Matt Hutchin- son, Jack Lower, Pat McDevitt, George McMillen, Jim Pitts, and Charlie Rodgers. In addition to the boys mentioned above, we have gotten fine performances from Don Wettlaufer, John Baker, Ed Morris, Bruce Costa, and Frank Klina, among others. The team is comprised of 28 young men who must endure the worst practice conditions and facilities of all our high school sports. Every member who endures the grueling 3 month training schedule, and 11 meet schedule, should be commended, for they are truly hard-core athletes. With the invaluable aid of Coach Tom Robinson, who trains the middle distance and distance runners, I feel that we will have some of the strongest distance runners in the Section. The staff is also very lucky to have Mr. Jamie Nachman, who does as many favors as he can to give us more time to work with the boys. The boys on the team compete against boys from 30 other schools from the Delaware Valley Area, weekly, in area college field houses. The indoor season keeps a competition edge that will prepare the team for an as- sault on the Section II crown, outdoors. The coaching staff is confident that with preparation on their part and the continued desire and spirit on the runner's part, we shall again reign as the champions of Section II. 70 TOP ROW: J. The 1970 BUCCANEER was headed by editor-in-chief Beth Mor- gan. The staff worked hard to produce a great yearbook and they used many new effects throughout the book. All of the staff donated much time in order to complete the book on time. The editor had the special job of making things run smoothly and meeting dead- lines on time. Mrs. Griffin, the advisor gave us help when it was needed. Donna Graham was assistant editor. The business staff had the job of selling the yearbooks and raising money to finance it. Mr. Hostetter, the advisor, along with the busi- ness manager Linda Schneck, sold advertisements and patrons in order to help pay for the book. They did a truly commendable job. The yearbook staff would like to thank Mrs. Griffin and Mr. Hos- tetter for donating their time to us. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Fra- sier and Mrs. Williams from the editor for all the help they gave her. Also, thanks goes to Mr. Bernard and the school photographers for pictures donated to us. Class History As we look back over the year's we have spent in high school, we remember so many things. Not just the bad times but also the good times that made up our years at Interboro. The Soph Hop held so long ago and the not so long ago events of our junior year. The Ju- nior-Senior party with it's theme of Purple Gaze and the Junior Prom that surpassed all others ever held at Interboro. Our election for our Senior class officers were held in May of our Junior year. To start our Senior year we had Don Short as president, Chris Davidson as vice- president, Chris Bondarchuk as secretary, and Letti Waite as treasurer. Then came our Senior year with all it's fun and res- ponsibilities. Also comes the realization that this was our last year to do something for your school. Our class set a precedent by being allowed to hold fund raising events. October brought us two events that will not be for- gotten by the people who helped with them. On the 18, the scene at the high school parking lot was a scene of much activity. Buckets, rags, and soap helped mark our Senior Car Wash. A week later brought a new event to Interboro — the first Pancake Supper. Re- member what fun it was with all the members of the class working together to make the pancake supper a success. Remember all those people waiting to be served, the extra sausage, and the extra syrup. Our next event was the Junior-Senior party on No- vember 21, with it's theme of Age of Aquarius . This was truly an experience. We, again, had a canned good drive to help those less fortunate than ourselves. The Ridley game and another bitter defeat marred Thanksgiving Day. Pick- ing of Homecoming Queen, Barbara Klimczak helped to liven up Thanksgiving night. In order to give more of ourselves there was a Toys for Tots drive before Christmas. To raise some money for the Christmas drive tickets were sold for an assem- bly. One may be sure Ed Justice and Joe Revello will not forget their haircuts in the near future. That month also brought some psychology classes tutoring John McGowan. He was made an honorary member of the Class of 1970. After a long, anxious wait, March brought the spring musical, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING. Mr. Livoy and his actors worked long, hard hours to present such an enjoyable play. The Senior trip came in April. Everyone enjoyed New York in it's Easter splendor as we viewed Radio City Music Hall's Easter Program. Also we enjoyed a guided tours, a walk around New York, Chinatown, and then dinner. Our Senior Prom was held on May 22 at the Down- ingtown Inn. There were many activities that could be enjoyed by all including bowling, swimming, and pool. Yearbooks were given out the week of the 18 and there was a rush of the students to get them signed before graduation week. The first week of June was filled with excitment and anticipation for the seniors. Our last events, the senior banquet, senior assembly and rehearsels for gradua- tion, helped to fill the week. The Class of 1970 graduat- ed and realized that they had succeeded in accom- plishing something for Interboro. PATRICIA ABATE: Pat; General; Marriage. RUTH ELAINE WILLIAMS ROBIN ANNE WOODROW CAROLYN WORRELL DEBORAH LOUISE WYANT JOHN M. YESAVAGE LAURA ZEEVERI From one who has tried to make the Class of 1970 a success. my fellow classmates: Look across the room. See that boy, that girl, your friends? Together, you've been through a small lifetime, twelve long years perhaps. Remember those tragedies, that exam, the time you were called to the office, that report card, that game you lost? Remember those not so tragic times, strolling hand in hand through the halls, the vic- tories, the proms and parties? Yes, you and your schooling have become inseparable. It has gained a part of you, you have gained a huge bit of it. And now, your public schooling years have drawn to a close. The world is at your fingertips. It's great and challenging and yearning for your contributions. Use those years you've spent in Inter- boro as your guiding light in life, that knowledge in your footsteps, those friendships in making new friends, and those memories you hold so dear as hopes for a future of happiness and prosperity. Sincerely, Donald William Short President of the Class of 1970 127 For Everything There Is a Season And a Time for Every Purpose Under Heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1 Class of 1971 Junior Class Officers: W. Dardine, President; D. Haws, Secretary; R. Klina, Vice-President; E. Wescott, Treasurer. Junior Class Congress: TOP ROW: T. Gibson, B. Grettner, M. Erbicella, J. Pitts, D. Jordan, R. Klina; 3rd ROW: B. lythgoe. J. Kendter, H. Erb, D. Fahey, D. Haws; 2nd ROW: Mr. Valenti, Sponsor; S. Liaca, E. Wescott, S. Barrar, L. Piasecki, W. Dardine; BOTTOM ROW: J. Neilson, N. Conlin, J. Anderson, L. Radcliffe, J. Moore; S. Richardson. MR. VALENTI — SPONSOR. Class History The 1970 Junior Class turned out to be one of the best ever. With hard working officers, a dedicated class congress, and sacrificing sponsors, what else could they do? Qualified people like Warren Dardine, President, and Rich Klina, Vice-President, set a fine example for future classes. Debbie Haws as secretary and Eileen Wescott as treasurer did a fine job with financial and correspondence matters. The first major event for the Class of 1970 was the Junior-Senior party. With both classes working together, the party was by far the best ever. The Juniors also helped with the Thanksgiving canned good drive to give a Thanksgiving dinner to the needy families in the area. They also provided toys at Christmas in the Toys for Tots Drive. During the winter season they sponsored a skating party and then later in the year held a combo contest. The Junior Prom was on March 13 and it was held at the MacDade Elementary School. The theme was Octopus' Carden and how excit- ing it turned out to be. The night of the prom was the best reward the Junior Class could receive for it's hard work during the year. 135 L. Ackleson D. Hummel, Vice-President; T. Rhodes, Secretary; L. Hance, Treasurer; T. McPherrin, President. CLASS HISTORY The sophomore class is sponsored by Miss Wor- ner, Mrs. DeMascola, and Mr. Duckenfield. The year began with the election of officers which were: Ted McPherrin, president; Mike Hummel, vice-presi- dent; Tracey Rhodes, secretary; and Linda Hance, treasurer. Starting off the year was the Harvest Hop held on October 17, 1969. It was a great success as many of the class dressed up and entered into the spirit of the Hop. The class had a United Fund drive during Novem- ber and at Christmas helped with the Toys for Tots drive at the high school. The year came to an end with the Soph Hop held on April 10. This was a wonderful way for the year to end because everyone had a great time. SPONSORS: Mr. Duckenfield; MISSING: Miss Worner, Mrs. DeMascola. 150 C. Alexandrowicz ). Baker S. Bararr J.
