Since it was a Presidential election year, the student body became actively involved in the political spectrum. Groups representing each major candidate were given an opportu- nity to express their particular candidates viewpoints. The students then voted for their candidate and President Rich- ard Nixon was victorious. The theme of the Junior-Senior Party took on a psycedel- ic appearance. Purple Haze’ was a November 22 Happening . The Ridley game and the Homecoming Queen marked the Thanksgiving season. Amid these festive activities the Interboro students showed their true spirit of Thanksgiving by sponsoring a canned food drive. In order to continue in this spirit of giving, the student body collected over 500 toys which enabled the children of Childrens’ Cottage to have a joyous holiday seasons. After an anxious wait through December, the students found the January presentation of Charley’s Aunt to be very enjoyable. A broadway show, a guided tour, dinner and a stroll around New York all added to the festivities of the Senior Trip. The first week of June was filled with excitement for the seniors. Senior assembly, senior banquet, senior prom, and graduation helped to keep the seniors occupied during their final week at Interboro. On June 8th, the Class of 1969 graduated and entered the world realizing that no class could ever be better than the “1969 best seniors ever . Senior Class Advisors: Mr. Dwyer, Mr. Gefrorer. With hard working class officers, a dedicated class congress, and sacrificing sponsors, how could the juniors fail? With qualified people like Gary Mayer, president, and Mike Bates, vice-president, the Junior class set a fine exam- ple for posterity. Chris Davidson as secretary and Lettie Waite as treasurer did a commendable job of keeping the class correspondence and financial matters in order. The Junior-Senior Party was the first major event for the Juniors. With cooperative efforts from both classes, the Ju- nior-Senior Party was one of the best ever. As the year went on, the juniors took part in many suc- cessful school activities, such as the canned food drive for Thanksgiving and operation Santa Claus, providing toys for the Children s Cottage. Then the big day came — February 28, when the Junior Prom of the class of “70” was held in the high school gym. The theme was “Moonlight and Roses and what an event it turned out to be. The night of the prom was the biggest reward the Junior Class could receive for its hard work and ingenuity. 81 82 C. Bowker E. Bowker W Bradley J Brat is T Brvant C. Bradlev E. Carrol V. Among their number were defensive back Jack McDonald, 3 two way starters: senior guard Mike Barrar, backfield veteran Bob Vanaman, and junior tackle Bob Morton, and nine newcomers who came to play important roles during the season. The season began and the lack of experience showed as the Bucs managed only one victory in the first six games. But, determined leadership from Co-captains Barrar and McDonald produced the finest team efforts of the season. With newcomer Gary Mayer deceptive ball handling and accurate passing the Buc squad won 2 of it s last 3 games, scored 10 touchdowns, where the first 6 games, had netted only 8. The team surprised Lansdowne Alden by rolling up 41 points, then downed Cheltenham with a great come from behind victory in the closing minutes of the game, and lost to a powerful championship Ridley Team. Eighteen players played their last game for the black and gold: Dennis Bakey, Mike Barrar, Bill Birch, Jack Bixby, Eric Bowker, John Brunken, Jim Davidson, Bill Friel, Ric Green, Walt Hall, Gordon Lewis, Jack McDonald, Jim McIntyre, Tom Polischuk, Karl Schaub, John Soprano, Ken Thomson, and Bob Vanaman. Co-captain Mike Barrar was voted the team s “Most Val- uable Player” by his teammates and selected to the All Del- aware County football team as a second team offensive guard. Co-captain Jack McDonald was an honorable men- tion selection, along with teammate Bob Morton. By team vote, tackle Bob Morton and quarterback Gary Mayer were selected Co-captains of the 1969 football team. 120 Varsity Pen neres t Nether Providence Chichester Lower Moreland Chester Sun Valley Lansdowne-Aldan Cheltenham Ridley Junior Varsity Penncrest Nether Providence Chichester Swarthmore Chester Sun Valley Lansdowne-Aldan Swarthmore lilt. For the first time since its organization it won the Section II and III title. As a team the season was excellent with only a 1 point loss to Ridley to blemish an otherwise undefeated season. The highlight of the season was the qul- ifying of Paul Wettlauffer for the State Championship. (This is the first runner in the history of Interboro to do so.) Next year’s team claims four returning Lettermen and many promising juniors and sophomores. The team hopes to retain the section crown and to repeat its 1967 undefeat- ed season. The expectation is good with the returning double threat of Don and Paul Wettlauffer. Winter Track Team This winter Mr. Papale was very fortunate to inherit a verv fine group of athletes from Mr. Corner. Most of the Juniors and Seniors on this year s team are veterans of last Spring s Section II Championship Team. With the helpful assistance of Mr. Corner in organizing the team and the tremendous aid given Mr. Papale by Coach Tom Robinson in all aspects of the sport. Coaches Robinson and Papale feel that the indoor season was a success. Because there are no dual meets in the indoor season, the team has no won or lost’ record. In every meet, we com- peted against 25 to 30 schools located in the Greater Phila- delphia Area. To earn a medal in one of these meets is quite an accomplishment. Our men did manage to earn more than their share. Our relay teams broke almost every school relay record. Individual records were broken in the half-mile run, mile run, two mile run, high jump, and the pole vault. Individu- al record breakers were Don and Paul Wettlauffer, Ed Mor- ris, Ted Johnson, Ed Safford, Paul Leung, and Tom Bryant. Outstanding relay performers, other than the ones just mentioned, were Chuck Quinn, Ed W'alker, John Baker, John Smith, Frank Klina, Fred Leopold, Dave Meyers, and others. All members of the team deserve a great deal of credit for working so hard for a sport where there is no Varsity letter awarded, and their only reward is the personal satisfaction derived from knowing that their efforts combined produces a champion. The team overcame many adversities, such as having no particular place to wrestle, moving heavy equipment and furniture, and a lack of spectators. This, however, is a problem that has hindered the team since its existence six years ago and which has taken from its esteem as a popular sport. Sparked by its able co-captain (senior) John Soprano and undefeated Bob Morton, the team turned in a 4-5 record. The team and coaches feel fortunate in losing only four se- niors: John Soprano, Jesse Thorton. Tom Polischuk and Ed Wescott. It also would like to give recognition to Richard Unangst who was injured at the early part of the season yet sacrificed and fought hard to make the Varsity Squad know- ing he would not Ik able to wrestle the following year. The coaches feel certain that with the added strength of the new wrestlers coming up from the Intermediate School, plus the fine hard core of wrestlers which remain, will aid the team in making next year’s season the best yet. J DeGregorio “69” Basketball Season —Best Ever The 1968—69 Interboro Basketball Team was unques- tionably the best quintet in the school’s history. Character- ized by fine teamwork, great determination, and unwaver- ing spirit, the Bucs compiled an unprecedented record of 16 victories and 5 defeats (10-2 in League Competition). Our only league losses were to Chester and by a total of only 3 points. Our Bucs were expertly coached by Mr. Kitching. His dedicated coaching molded these talented individuals into a smooth working unit. Our team was lead by 6' 4” Gordon Heake, an All Delco performer and section II s leading scorer and rebounder. Heake received plenty of assistance from two juniors, 6 5” krank Stick Tracey and 6 1 Jack Bitting, both of whom maintained scoring averages in double figures and were in- strumental in our domination of the backboards. Gary Mayer, a smooth ballhandler and passer, excellently quart- erbacked our potent offense. Mayer recieved plenty of backcourt aid from two fine senior guards. Skip Lunger and Jim Davidson. Lew Garrison, a 6 2’ leaping junior, often came off the bench to spark the team in crucial moments. The second unit was composed of juniors Wayne McFalls, John DiGregorio, Jack Lower, and our Costa Rican ex- change student, Marco Bonilla. The team sincerely appreciated the loyal support and the outstanding spirit of the student body; no doubt this inspi- ration contributed to the team’s fine showing. 132 Varsity Scores Int. The Girls’ Varsity Basketball team had a good season. They were undefeated until they met Kidley. Spirited victories over Chichester, Lansdowne-Aldan, and Holy Child were led by Captain Diane Rad- cliffe who averaged twenty points per game. Coach Miss O’Malley, commented that she believe,d that a psycho- logical obstacle defeated the girls in the Ridley contest. However, they came back with a romp over Nether Providence by a ten point margin. Later, they suffered a loss to Chester by a meager three points. Jackie Sampson and Gerri Gray were very benificial to the team, each scoring about ten points per game. Ahn Mercer and Carol Bissin- ger have shared the job of play maker. Denise Reese and Connie Wel- don served as the team’s defensive strength with Kathy Hoppes stand- ing by as an able reserve. The Junior Varsity, composed of all sophomores, had a record of 4-2. Bright prospects are forwards Carol Larsen. Nancy Conlin, Lynne Sheldon, Lois Radcliffe, and guards Nancy Roberts and Florence Machette. Their most impressive wins were over Nether Providence and Chester. The entire squad, coached by Miss Lyons, should prove to be excellent varsity material next season. 138 ORGANIZATIONS Layout Staff: STANDING: L. Dolan. B. Morgan. J McDonald. C Irwin. M. The yearbook staff headed by editor-in-chief Bob Stanley worked hard to produce a good yearbook. All of the staff donated much time starting in the summer and continuing until the yearbook was completed. They did multiple chores of drawing layouts, transfer- ing them to 3R s, identifing pictures, writing write- ups, and numerous other jobs. The art editor. Jack Bixby, used his talents to draw sketches and art work for us. The typing staff with Valerie Taylor as editor did a commendable job. Miss Lyons, the advisor helped us greatly. The business staff helped by the O.A.S.l.S. had the job of selling yearbooks and raising money to finance it. Miss Smith, the advisor, helped by co-chairmen Debbie Dugan and John DeFrancisco, sold advertise- ments and patrons in order to raise the money. The yearbook staff would like to thank Miss Lyons and Miss Smith for donating their time to us. Miss Lyons was a truly interested advisor and without her help the yearbook would never have been a success. M iss Smith helped a lot, taking care of all the finan- cial matters. Also a special thanks to Mr. Tom Chelius for all the pictures he and his student photographers took for us. Typing Staff: STANDING: B. Mor- gan. V. Taylor, typing editor; SIT- TING: L. Pupo, P. Toney. Hi-Q Team Although the meets have not yet been completed, this year’s Hi-Q team can be counted a suc- cess. Success is not measured in wins and losses, but in the ability of individuals to work together as a group. An encouraging sign for Hi-Q in the future is the interest of the underclassmen especially from the Junior class and the In- termediate School. The seniors, this year did much to bring this year to a successful conclusion. STANDING: L. Robinson. Mr Mobley, sponsor; B. I.ockman; SITTING: I). Short. B. Whitley, J Mc- Donald. D. Scott. F.T.A. Before Interboro had its own Oasis, a noticeable aridity of school spirit was blighting school life. In the fall of 1967, a few students conceived the idea of an Oasis for the Advancement of Spirit in Interboro School. Nothing is more cantagious than enthusiasm. This organization, created and maintained by concerned, vivacious students electrified the school atmosphere. It has become a vital service organization. Not only has it sparked pep rallies and attendance at games. Oasis dances have proved to have as much glamor as shooting stars and have made it possible for Oasis to give gen- erously to worthy causes. The members do not use profits for themselves. The twenty senior boys who are its present members generate enthusiasm, life, and school spirit. To join Oasis a student applies for mem- bership (which is limited) or at the opening of school is among the first twenty to appear in answer to the call for members for this active, involved group. Mr. Dwyer and Mrs. South- worth are co-sponsors. ‘ It s the going thing to ! e involved and Oa- sis is deeply involved — in the right “going things. Cheerleaders STANDING: S. Let our youth be led by thee That the truth may set them free. Answer please our fervent call; By thy strength we shall not fall. God, please bless this place of truth, Beacon to our country's youth. Interboro, true we 11 be. Staunch in loyalty to thee. By thy colors strong we stand. Proudly led by thy strong hand. Give us now the world to know. Evil is our only foe. Marching on throughout the years. Sons and daughters raise the cheers. Though the time has quickly passed, Wealth we’ve gained will always last. Mem rys' leaflets close shall twine, All our knowledge closely bind. Hail! All hail! Our praises ring. Hail! All hail! To thee we sing. Black and Gold will ever be Foremost in our memory. 200
