By studying foreign languages, it is felt a student can learn to ap- preciate the differences between his own culture and that of other people. This year the Language Department has emphasized the spoken language, rather than the written language in order to give the student a better understanding of what he hears, and to help him speak more fluently. Having acquired this basic understanding, the student is equipped with a background preparing him for further practical use of the lan- guage, or for more advanced study. 11
