The brewing of beer, H' mg ' history reveals, began with the Babylonians in 4500 B.G., or 'V ' : 6500 years ago. The people there also originated the first lj civilization of western Asia. Other peoples, the Incas of Peru, ::::::A f for instance, knew beer-making long before Christopher Colum- 5 S bus dreamed of a lfVestern World. Knowledge of brewing I ,.,, steadily advanced and became an integral part of the cultures - of the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. He '::2f:- was, among other things, a philosopher, an inventor, a publisher-and a brewer of fine beer. When building the town of Pennsbury, in 1684, Penn constructed a brew-house, the third build- ing completed. QThis was recently reconstructed on its original foundationsj He brewed for his own table and for his neighbors, and issued regulations governing the price and sale of beer, encouraging its drinking as a step toward real modera- tion, History records--- William Penn was a great lover of beer and accustomed to praise his own brewing.
