Looking Down From Heaven As I s1t here thxs mornmg polrshmg my halo and tv lddlmg my wxngs I thmk of that day long ago when Ifxrst arrwed here It was a beautxful June day but the boat was overloaded All of a sudden there was a loud crash and the captam crxed Abandon shlp We all baxl ed out mto the deep cold water of the Elkhorn Rxver All made xt to shore but me My boots fxlled with water and I couldn t swtm So I drowned When I came to Ifound myself facmg St Peter m front of the Pearly Gates He asked me for my record and I told hun I attended Inman Hrgh School He saxd ' Boy go rught m you deserve a change Smce then Ive met all of the heavenly bodnes and Inow amuse myself by lookmg down upon the poor mortals of the earth below Rxght now I see a great cloud of smoke and fxre That remmds me of the feud between the Semors and Jumors of 50 and 51 As I get a closer vxew I see xt IS the second burnmg of the InmanSchoolhouse I guess the Senxors drdn t know how lucky thexr escape was tn 51 Why Ibeheve that 15 Ralph Sholes fxghtmg the f1re I remember he was the most am bxtxous student in hrs class I m not at all surprxsed that he IS the prmcxpal of the school and hrs w1fe Delores IS the supermtendent For the past f1fteen years Ralph and Delores have lwed very happxly in then' small bungalow In O Nexll the west suburb of Inman Ralph never forgot that article he read In the Reader s Dxgest back rn 1949 Cheaper by the Dozen because he now has twelve chxldren The buzldmg can never be saved but Ralph IS stxll furxously f1ght1ng the fire He ns trymg to save those preclous love letters that he re cewed from Eva sxnce hls wxfe doesn t know about them I know the buxldmg IS gomg to burn so I ll go look upon some of the other Semors I wonder what that smell ns It really smells to the hlgh heaven I ll Just follov. xt Why Lf It 1sn t Jam Gallagher the head cook for the Leo Sobotka dude ranch cookmg pan cakes Poor J1m lost the Gallagher ranch to lucky Leo m a fast poker game at Reno where they were gettmg dworces from Ila June and Imogene Today Leo IS holdxng a celebratxon for all of hxs former classmates The fxrst guest l . - . . . . . . .
