E , PRINCIPAL Dedication The fourth year of Ingraham High School witnessed the first major administrative change in its brief history. At mid-term, Claude F. Turner, principal of our school, was transferred to the task of organizing another new high school. However, Ingra- ham will always remember Mr. Turner for the outstanding precedent he set for his position of authority. He demonstrated that a principal need not merely be the oiiicial representative of a school, but that he can also be a friend and guide to every individual within the school. Therefore, it is to the first principal of Ingraham High School, Claude F. Turner, as a symbol of man's power of leadership, that we dedicate the 1963 Glacier. ... ,. In order to become a member of Majors, each boy must have participated in varsity sports, and earned his letter. The purpose, however, of Majors was to serve Ingraham. This was accomplished by patrolling Ingraham's overcrowded lunchroom, thus aiding its appearance and efliciency. Majors officers on parade Varsity representatives, front and center! 33 A Julie Donnelly Sanclyg Suege - l I Ingraham High our hats are off to you ' Q gf, YNQ 6, S 4 Is Ingraham gonna win it? Yea, H1211 3 The goal of this year's Song and Yell Leaders was to promote school spirit. This was accomplished by introducing new songs, chants, and routines for game action, as well as for pre-game and half-tirne entertainment. Little-publicized pre-game activi- ties consisted of presenting the team with cookies and gum. At the termination of each season, the team was provided a well-deserved cake by the song leaders. Song and Yell Leaders continued to encourage student attendance at the spring sports by attend- ing games themselves. This meant more time had to be given and more money spent on new outfits. By striving for perfection of their routines and by working together as a group, our Pep Leaders did their best to create a favorable impression of Ingraham throughout the city. .X 1 L Mx J. , If ,f ,K J ' ,. This defeat was carefully calculated and the team combination for victory was difficult to Hnd. The season began with defeat in the opener to the Northern champ Roosevelt. Then well-executed teamwork won three games for the Rams over Edmonds, Shore- crest and Lincoln. In the four following games, a disastrous slump occurred - Ingraham was defeated by Ballard, Shoreline, Terrace and by Roosevelt for a second time. All hopes for the play offs and the tournament were crushed. Although disappointed, the team was yet Lmdaunted. Their pride was in playing their best and this brought results. The last six games of the season held five victories - only Lincoln marred this streak. The proper working combinationrhad been found and Edmonds, Shorecrest, Ballard, Shoreline and Terrace bowed to superior Ram capabilities. Ingraham was undoubtedly the most improved team in the Metro League. Had the season merely begun with the last six games, Ingraham would unquestionably have been a contender for a berth in Seattle's last State Toumament. With two other teams favored to win, Rams soon disproved forecasts and were in the crowded first spot at mid-season. The first-round record was six wins, the lone loss being to Shoreline. Through individual ef- forts and team spirit, Ingraham performed well in the meets. The beginning of the season Was very difficult, however. Rain and wind made running miserable if not nearly impos- sible. Undaunted, Ingraham overwhelmed a young Shore- crest team, but was defeated by Shoreline. The Rams rallied and downed the Lynx. The Re- lay Carnival at the University, saw Ingraham come from be- hind to place second over-all. Hopes were still high and directed to city victory at mid- season. Following a ball and sev- eral golfers down the green is not as alluring as sitting down to Watch a sport. Despite the lack of cheering onlookers, Ram team spirit and past ex- perience was an adequate sub- stitute for building one of the best golf teams in the city. At midseason, Ram putters were undefeated. Hope for five points toward the All Sports Trophy was high. Eyes had to travel fast to keep up with the ball. They met defeat only in the first match against Lincoln, but the Lynx had been pre- viously noted as a real threat in the Northern Division. League competition was not the sole target of the team members. Inter-team compe- tition was also at full swing. Members challenged each other in hopes of raising a notch in team standings. The fast pace of tennis of- fered exercise and challenge for players, excitement for spectators and points for Ingraham toward the All- Sports Trophy. Intramurals are for fun-seeking athletes The Physical Education Department, under the direction of Miss Henry and Mr. Zeger, provided an Intramural Program for Ingraham's fun-seeking athletes. Flash football and basketball were of special in- terest to the boys. One of the active basket- ball teams even gained fame by defeating the teachers in the Faculty-Student Bas- ketball Game. Co-educational sports, such as vollyball, had many participants. Inter-roll room competition added further to the enthusi- asm. Fencing and archery oifered outlets for the more creative types of physical energy of both boys and girls. Still other students tested their aiming accuracy in the P.T.A. bowling league. However, the highlight of the year for the Intramural Program was the winning of the All-City Swimming Championship. About twenty boys and thirty girls, coached by Mr. Fain and Miss Henry, comprised the P.T.A.-sponsored swim team. A sincere love for swimming and complete dedication on the part of every team member prompted this victory. g 1 1 GIRLS' SWIM TEAM - FIRST ROW: M. Robertson, S. Easter, M. Macdonald, B. Rodgers, L. The three days Ingraham borrowed the Kobe Choir will long be remembered. When the Kobe Choir first arrived, after a delay of three hours, they were greeted with a traditional Ingraharn welcome. It is one they will long remember. After each Kobe student had met his host, they left for their very first night in the United States. Soon the Japanese students became accustomed to the strange surroundings. The next three days were filled with sight- seeing trips and concerts. Ingraharrfs Choir gave a banquet in their honor after the students had spent a day at school visiting classes. In the exchange of customs, Ingraham students discovered that the Japanese not only knew how to twist but knew how to Charleston. The Choir was presented with mountaineer hats and made Honorary Mem- bers of the Ingraham Student Body. Yes, these moments will long be remembered but even now there are students planning a trip back to Japan to visit their fellow Ingraham Students.
