y ptACTICA GREEN AND WHITE FOR sSi 1957 PUBLISHED BY STUDENT BODY OF INGLEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA J Tomorrow... Hmmm, so this is earth, specifically California, locally Inglehogen, no Inglewood. Well, here I am for the next ten months EEEAUHH. Such a gas! The air I mean! The radio-isotopes in this atmosphere are short-circuiting my metabolism. Oh, pardon my lolly palooza. Let me introduce myself. I am ZZn 02 jr. I was sent here by the Uni- versity of Greater Zorch. I am here as an observer, strictly as an observer. I do not wish to get involved. My views are not the same as yours. I observe things with a clean outlook, as you may already have noticed. Not with half closed, half crossed myopic eyes as you earthlings do. Possibly you would like to hear of my Alma Mater. Jumping Space Bug, there is just no comparison. Instead of arriving at school in a vehicle (cars as you call them) we decide where we wish to be and our electrons reassemble themselves at that destination; just like that. Simple eh? Was I ever surprised to see that you have returned to the neolithic era. Humph! Boys and girls literally dragging each other around by the arms. It seems strange that you would build so many of your structures on top of each other. Well . . . perhaps in given time you will be as advanced as we from Sirius . . . You might be wondering just how our minds function. Well, in rstudie Fyo yJ have) recorded my comments on your customs, organization anfi amio tof- vyrhrouc this book. At any rate, I sincerely hope that you wi J jqpffecy e m A$6p y, I don't care — but this is polite usage. A?' joBca ! Ever wondered just what happens when a light goes out, a locker or door Hs'!' wwwj gets stuck or the heat goes off? Perhaps you've never really noticed the { !;! ; excellent staff of men and women that keeps your school in such terrific | !|!| | condition all the way around. Well, Charlie Arnold, Head Custodian, is the man to be thanked. He heads up our very fine crew of artisans and craftsmen. It s almost unbelievable, the amount of work that is turned out by Charlie and his staff. Any request for Custodial Service is answered almost before the ink is dry. And oh, that dirty campus! All of your refuse at the end of the lunch periods (and if you’ve looked recently, it's a lot) is removed, and, in no time at all, the campus is again close to perfection. So, to Charlie Arnold, head custodian, and his fine staff for all their hard work, our 1957 Annual is dedicated. Our many thanks to you all. Because... m Through the Nov schmoz ko pop? (Which way to the men's room?) 6 This is the first time I've ever seen a man-made crater! I wonder if they sell fextls with skurnly souce? . . . Immigrants from Uranus? EUCCCHH! Jerry Montgomery Student Body President Pot Bailey Student Body Secretary Leading the Student Body for the first semester, I note Jerry Mont- gomery. Besides being top man in Student Council, he also played Varsity baseball and football, cap- turing high honors in both. Jerry has succeeded in doing a fine job in this office also. Row I: Sam Kuri, Tom Herman, Kathy Gary Sides, Beverly Rice, Bob Barger, Cobb, Miss McMonies, Mike Bryant. Row II: Steve Ten Eyck, Jim Clicking, Dale Larson, Judy Stoner, Dick Burton, Sue Gillman, James Harrington, Pat Sellers, Martha Legg, Don Boynton, Carol Erickson, Harold Thompson, Errol This student council . . . Space, what an organization! Reminds me of the old Galactic inter-group sessions we had under the elder statesman, Ehzred . . . But that's another story. Like old times . . . the elected and appointed representatives of your various student organizations decide policy on student affairs . . . and very ably too, for rank novices— competently advised by Miss McMonies. I recall one tremendous hassle about who may or may not use your senior square . . . Something about the faculty involved . . . They also arranged your best Sentinal Daze . . . Very entertaining and spirited . . . these and other weighty decisions all determined in the best parliamentary procedure ... I feel that this group really prepares you earthlings for your Socio-groups. Row 1: Corlene Bonnivier, Marilyn Spence, Warren Atkins, Judy Chapman, Jime Earle, Sam Kuri. I found, as I entered into A-109, a list of objectives proposed by the Second Semester Student Council to accomplish, Mmmmmm Pep Week; I see now the success of this was determined right here. Hold a success- ful charity drive; Wasn’t that the one where they had that fabulous movie? Here s one about Spring Sports. Support and publicize spring sports; I wondered why the stands were so packed. Set up a hall of honor; I imagine this is where all of the immortals of the school will be honored. Who knows, maybe I'll get my name on the list. Leading these ambitious leaders was Warren Atkins, president, Carlene Bonniver, vice president, and secretary Marilyn Spence; and of course their advisor Miss McMonies. Filling the office of Student Body President for second semester was smiling Warren Atkins. Also an athlete, he held a spot on the Sentinel eleven this season. Fin- ishing up the year with flying colors, Warren kept up the fine standards of past presidents. Girls Beverly Rice eh? 1st semester Girls' League President I see. She did a real good job I'd soy, judging from the fine results of the Grid Queen Crowning and the annual Backward Dance. League In charge of the very fabulous Annual Fashion Show this year was Miss Pat Sellers, Girls’ Lea- gue president for the second semester. Came through with flying colors too, from what I understand. From the way the records look, Girls' League is a pretty going organization. Bogs’ League Paul Peterson Shortly after coming to Ingle- wood I ran into Bob Barger, first semester Boys’ League President — It is not too pleasant to run into Bob as he is solidly con- structed and played on the var- sity football team for three years. WAUGH! While walking down the ivory yf halls of IHS one day, I heard ? U Z C . 2 2- wild cries of Honeybear, Hon-' ' ' ' eybear. Senior Honor Board While going through some old school rec- ords, I came across your Senior Honor Board activities. For first semester you elected Sam Kuri, President; Nancy Hull, Vice-President; and Terry Crego as Secretary-Treasurer. Dur- ing this semester you served as guides for Back to School” night, held a progressive dinner, and made the Senior Square into a fine tradition that it is. During the second semester you elected Dave Gunther, as President; Carol Lee Hansen, Vice-President; and Marold Thompson, Secretary-Treasurer. You served at the P.T.A. International Ban- quet and helped with Alumni Day. 18 Sorry, but you'll have to go around Row I: Mike Fagan, Jim Harrington, Eddy Smith, Martin Ganz, John Mendonsa. I guess they need this many to keep students from knocking each other down when the bell rings in Building A. Besides doing a terrific job on traffic control, this club trails around pick- ing up papers that students carelessly drop on the campus. Many thanks should be given for the great job they are doing. Leading 1st semester as President was Mike Bryant; Vice President was Pat Verbeck; Secretary was Diane Marchant. For 2nd semester John Men- donsa President, Ann Mahoney, Vice Presi- dent, and Jeri Drake Secretary. How could he miss, when there's such a large basket? Oh goodie, a banana! 19 Tin Senior Cabinet Jim Earle, first semester President, did an outstanding job I'd say with he able help of Pat Sellers, Vice-President, and June McFarlin, Secretary-Treasurer. Some first semester accomplishments were: Island of Dreams their Senior Prom and Our Town'' their Senior Play. e r Senior Cabinet I Sam Kuri, second semester President, Marjorie Webber, Vice-President, Karel Leslie, Secretary. These three remind me of those of the glass planet, such hard working earthlings, and my, their brains would compare to those on Aquas, the planet of thinkers. Wow, these earth- lings! It was the Senior Play, Our Town, by Thorton Wilder. Unnoticed I settled down in one of Inglewood's prominent gentlemans lap and proceeded to watch the play. If I must say so myself Malcolm Con did a fine job as the stage manager. I enjoyed the absence of elab- orate scenery and the fine portrayal by Inglewood’s talented young actors and actresses. Senior Log Oh brother, remember your freshman year? Qr . . . maybe you'd rather not. Well, at least you won't want to have for- gotten your class officers. Danny Udov, Vicki Winje, and Sherry Sidebotham, they were. Turned in a fine job too from what I've heard. Second sem- ester, you had equally fine officers, Ernie Stone as President, Nancy Ruskit as Vice-President, and Charlotte Wade as your Secretary-Treasurer. Remember the highlights of that year? Yes, there was the sports night, the skating party and of course the picnic held at Centinela Park. Time flew by and suddenly you were upper under-classmen. Sophomores! Jerry Montgomery and Tom Herman took the reins as president with JoAnn Teeple and Barbara Daggett as veeps. Taking care of the money that year were Nancy Hull and Marilyn Clark. Because your freshman activities were so successful you again held a sports night and also a picnic, once again at Centinela Park. You couldn't possibly forget your Sophomore dance, The Clover Crawl.” From 9 to 1 1:30, you danced to the music of Sal Frising and his band. During the evening a bouquet of beautiful roses was presented to Betty Martin, signifying that she was Queen. Then you were upper classmen — Juniors. In honor of the Grid Queen you held a Halloween dance. Remember the Gridiron Goblin ? Dick Burton and Jim Fagan wielded the gavel during '56 with Janet Prill and Kathy Cochrane V.P.'s and Mary Boynton and Margie Webber as secretary-treas- urers. On the night of April 27, 1956, the moment for which you waited three long years, came. April in Paris, the Junior Prom. From 9 to 12, you danced to the music of the Rhythmaires with Billy Strange as your special guest. Sherry Sidebotham reigned as queen with Janet Prill, Nancy Mark- ley, Connie Wernik, Bette Anderson, Pat Bailey and Vicki Winje as princesses. Seniors! It came almost over night, didn't it? The honor of Senior class presidency was bestowed on Jim Earle and Sam Kuri. Pat Sellers and Margie Webber took over the vice-presidency and handling the money and the minutes were June McFarlin and Karel Leslie. It seemed as though everything came at once then. But of course the great- est one was the Senior Prom, Island of Dreams. The Palm Room at the Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica was your site on December 7, 1956. Ohh, such an evening. Keith Williams and his band were the music men for that very spe- cial evening. The Senior Play came up next. Remember Our Town with Malcolm Cann playing the leading role? Amidst all the year end banquets was one that really stood out. Your Graduation Banquet, the last gath- ering of the Senior class. The 13th of June saw the class of '57 seated on Sentinel Field where graduation exercises took place. Tears . . . oh . . . but then everyone took off to the fabulous graduation dance at the Holly- wood Palladium, where everyone danced from 9 to 5 to the music of Les Brown. All over . . . yes, but those four years at Ingle- wood High will always remain an important part of your life. Chances are you'll never forget your alma mater either. And now we offer from our shrine a prayer to God. Jet - Propelled Juniors Corrine Anderson Secretary Don Boynton President Martha Legg Vice-President First Semester During my stay in this institution, I've been following a num- ber of earthlings to understand their activities. Perhaps two of the most interesting were Don Boynton and Steve Bracht, both Junior presidents. As I was trailing Don Boynton I en- tered into a huge hall called George Green and here beheld my first concert, Jazz, that is. I learned this was one of the Juniors' many activities. Some man named Howard Rumsey was picking strings tied into a hollow box. How hilarious, but I enjoyed it immensely. Later, I caught sight of the Junior vice-president and secretary, Martha Legg and Corrine Anderson, selling some long wet sour-tasting things called pickles. Even so, some earthlings must like them for well over 1000 were sold. While following Steve second semester, I found him, Linda Cupp and Florence Meredith, who were now vice president and secretary, working on a prom, ac- tually a dance held for Juniors, which was a big success. I believe the Juniors had a very successful year and I am sure they will have an even more successful Senior year. Sure wish I could come back! 56 Florence Meredith Secretary Steve Bracht President Linda Cupp Vice President Second Semester Cabinet D. Abram, A. Adams, H. Adkins, Y. Albrecht, R. Aldrich, AA. I remember the first cabinet meeting I tuned in on. Jim and the cabinet were making plans for a sports night. This is where all the soph- omores play a game called volley ball or float around in a liquid (the formula of which I think is H20). The next time I came in contact with class of '59 was when they were sell- ing a weird conglomeration called cake. This was during your Earth month, March. I think I'll take that formula home — it might make good bems bait. Later, they were planning another sports night. Waugh! The Sophomores must have physical jerks on the brain! But, of course, I can't blame them since the last sports night was so successful. The future looks bright for this energetic group. 66 ALEOA RUSSELL Secretary-Treasurer MIKE BRYANT President PEG DAWSON Vice-President Second Semester Cabinet A. Acosta, J. Adams, A. Airlie, D. Fantastic Freshmen GARY SIDES SUE GILLMAN KATHY ROGERS President Vice-President Secretary-Treasurer First Semester As I explored the labyrinth of Building A, a blast of sound shook me to my very core. Fearing a catastrophe, I hastened toward the mass of sound. I discovered a convention of youngsters thumping each other's backs. They were vo- ciferously reviewing the year's events and commenting on future plans. My, what an ambitious, effervescent crowd. One of their many activities was helping keep the campus clean. Their pride in the campus reflects in the fine job they did. One of the problems of a group such as this, it seems, is keeping up a good attendance at cabinet meetings. This group not only had good attendance, but they increased their membership to twice its original size AND THEY MADE $30.00!! For the future, they have a number of plans for the members of their class. One of these plans is an excur- sion to Centinela Park for the Freshman Class Picnic. I might observe from their enthusiasm and activity, that this crew might go far. 76 MARY ELLA HAAS RAY ROlFSON PAM LUTHER Secretary President Vice-President Second Semester Cabinet S. Adams, P. Jeanne, I have heard, has the distinction of being the second foreign student to appear in this locality. I am, naturally, the third. According to my notes, she is from Nancy, France. Hmmm, very interesting. Actually, joining in all the ac- tivities as she has, classes, clubs, etc., has put her at an advantage over me. But then, that was why she was sent here,- to take back an impression of the United States and its inhabitants. According to a bit of eavesdropping I've been doing, it's been a real honor having her at Inglewood and she has been a wonderful friend to those of you that got to know her. Gee, I'm jealous. You didn't say anything like that about me. Of course, you don't even know I'm here. Valedictorian and Salutatorian Whew, so these are The Brains ! Brother, to have kept up those grade? all the way through high school must have really been a hassle. But, this part I do not comprehend. How can people with such intellectual facul- ties have such personalities? Both Darlene Brudi, Valedictorian, and Mary Boynton, Salutatorian, from what I understand, are really cards, and in my estimation, should be dealt with. Both have been active in G.A.A. for all four years as first teamers predominantly, with Mary holding the vice presidency first semester of this year. Mary served as Junior Class Secretary-Treas- urer and Student Body Treasurer. Friends ga- lore too. Everytime they turn around I notice somebody hollaring Hi. Well, this is all too confusing to me. Good grief, Jean, where is that picture schedule? Pencil, papers, pictures to be taken, rubber cement, a small staff, and deadlines to be met (big joke); all this combined is the Annual Staff. They're a weird bunch of bipeds who go running around their tiny room yelling and biting nails. Danny does nothing but feed the fish and scrub walls. Grace is so quiet I think she is communing with her subsconscious. Jean is very rarely seen, she's always out scheduling pictures. Lindell never gets his work in on time, but does well on my portraits. Marilee does a little typing, us- ing two fingers, but what can you expect from a sophomore. Pam, Virginia and Carol came in the second semester, resting the first. Their rattle-brained editor, Judy White, is completely inefficient, but that's what makes up their annual. Judy Mitzel is a yes girl to the editor — a copy editor who knows nothing about copy. Ruth just picks up Mr. Cohen's mail and throws digs at him. Sentinel Daze, which was held to arouse school spirit. These dances I have seen, seem to be a lot of fun. If there were some short- er students I would like to shuffle around too. Spatio - Temporal Socializing Sneaking Snordliffs, what a sweetheart! Shirley Anderson was chosen by 13-20 club as their sweetheart for 1957. There were also 4 princesses, Linda Olsen, Diane Edwards, Penny Fry, and Carol Schott. One November eve- ning, while resting in a Sentinel Inn wall socket, I peered out and got quite a shock when I saw the Boys' League Corn Stalk Stomp. We don't even have corn where I come from. But even if we did, we wouldn't stomp on it. The next dance, in February, was the Annual Girls' League Backward Dance. There were so many people scuffling around with their arms entwined in that hot room, I was forced to fly to the lobby where they were judging the corsages made by the girls for the boys. It looked like an exhibition of Saturnian primitive arts. Afterwards I saw the girls paying for dinner and enter- tainment. They look like space helmets to me, and those numbers on their space suits . . . What are they, code numbers? Nov one boy throws the ball away . . but wait, another boy on the opposing team catches it and returns it to him. How courteous these Earthlings arc! The first player is mad now and chases the second one. By George, what a stupid game! They must have space fever. One evening while I was strolling by the Farm (I never could find any farmers there] I heard quite a racket. Being invisible, I snuck by the gateman and emerged on a scene of chaos. Up in the stands people were waving little flags and yelling across the field at each other. Out on the gridiron (I never have been able to figure out how they got a lousy name like that) the Inglewood Sentinels were battling the Para- mount Pirates. The Pirates were planning to steal the victory from the Sents but they ended up on the short end of a 28-12 score. After the game, the Paramount coach was so mad he looked like he was about ready to blast off for outer space. After rooming around for a week I decided to sample more of this Earth football. This time the Sents got licked as Morningside won 37-6 For the next couple of v eeks I stayed away from Sentinel Field. It's a good thing I did too for Redonda and Mira Costa beat the proverbial pants of Inglewood. 39-6 and 38-7 respectively. Being a born traveler. I decided to follow the team to las Vegas for a game with El Rancho High. Finding it hard to pull myself av ay from the bright lights, women, gambling tables and other assorted attractions, I arrived at the game late, just in time to see the Sents pull out a 26-26 tie. After my enjoyable visit to as Vegas, I made my way down to Torrance for another game. I.H.S. won this one, 13-9, outplaying the host Tartars. Now that I hod had a taste of football, I coudn't stand to miss any of the games. Therefore, I was in attendance when the Sents were de- feated by Centennial 6-0. leuzinger 18-13 and Santa Monica 20-18. When I return to my home star I am going to tell my friends about this game and attempt to organize an inter-galactic league. 134 How silly! All this over a little ball! Osborn, McFerson, Season’s Scan Basketball is a crazy game! Who ever heard of throwing a big ball through a little elevated hoop? I could see more sense in it if they would bring the basket a little lower. It might be all right for these big six and seven footers, but it isn't fair for the little B's and C's. Even while playing under these adverse conditions, the J.V.'s, B's, and C's managed to turn in fine sea- sonal records. The Junior Varsity won 10 games while losing 8. During the league the Sents started off like a house afire, winning their first three games. Then they simmered down and finished the league with a 6 won-6 lost record. The B's had a better league season than the J.V.'s, although they had a dismal practice record. Their final record in the Bay League was only 4 losses. Although their record doesn't show it, the C's had a very good ball club. They lost over four games by less than three points but still managed to finish with a 5-7 won-lost mark. Based on the results of these three teams during the 1956-57 season, I feel it would be safe to say that Inglewood High will be well supplied with basket- ball talent for the next few years. 140 Art Green Johnny Nichols Marvin Trujillo Jim MeBee 8ob Osborn Jim McFerson Don Ray Jim Lockwood Jim Gildcrslccvc Gary Cunningham Robin Young Greg Chapman Coach Buck Smith V arsitq Basketball While walking across the gym floor one day, some bas- ketball players grabbed me and began using me for a basketball. While looking through some of your past annuals, I found that IHS has a tradition of fine baseball teams, and this year was no exception. Led by mentor . . . another sports term I don't savvy . . . Chuck Freeman, the Sent compiled an outstanding record in the Bay League. This, coupled with their fine mark in practice games, gave them an excellent year. When I get back home again, if I ever do with all this wandering around. I'm going to tell my friends about this weird game. Of course they'll never believe me but it will provide them with plenty of laughs. 152 V arsitif Baseball Coach Chuck Freeman 153 Is this what they call the line of scrimmage? 154 Pitchers—Dee Aaker, Marty Fortson, Jerry Gout, Jerry Montgomery, Chuck Smith. Anthony Weishaar, Bryce Traywick, Coach Cox, Danny McMullen, Jim Harter, Jerry Stone, Ronnie Jones, Gary Cunningham, Bob Crigler, Tony Campagna, Art Green. Racket Squad This year's racket wielders, while not into big competition at the time of this writing, have amass- ed a twelve win, two loss rec- ord in practice. This is great! Commander Cox, like Com- mander Whitehead of Schwep- pes fame, has the formula for success, it seems. ✓ Girls’ Sports Row I: Connie Wernick, Donno Kerr, Rita Crowell, Mary Jane Boynton, Marold Thompson, Linda Cupp. Janet Frit sen. This hard working body meets frequently to determine policies for your entire district . . . and a very competent job it does too, from all I gather. With all the building, and bond elections going on, I'm surprised their circuits don't fuse, but these peo- ple function magnificently. Dr. A. Wallace, and his more than efficient secretary, Charlotte Richter. Between them they really keep your school functioning, an almost impossible task when seen through the dis- passionate eyes of this observer. When pressed for a statement to put into this publication, Mr. Wallace sent over the following remarks .... Every effort has been extended at Inglewood High School to provide opportunities .to develop students who will be recognized for superior scholarship and outstanding qualities of good citizenship. It is a pleasure to see students working in close harmony with members of the faculty and staff to achieve these objectives. 168 DR. FRED ADAMS Boys' Vice Principal Strange, these earthlings utilize the sub areas beneath their structures as quarters. Why? Air- less, lightless, useless! Observing the local hall of judgment. Student Council, so called, good grief, Charlie Brown, what a hassle! Rigid seats, bolted to the floor ... to prevent the structure from tumbling, I assume. Some twenty represen- tatives of various organizations wrangle here, regulated by MISS LOU McMONIES, Girls' V.P. Very Patient again. They say patience is a virtue. They certainly have strong backing around here. Encouraging bright ideas is but one of her many jobs, I have learned. Entering into the innermost inner office, I observe Dr. Fred Adams, Boys' V.P., meaning very pa- tient. He is the one to whom people go when they wish to cry on someone's shoulder. I note one poor soul nervously awaiting something Moisture condenses on the upper regions of his cranium as he wobbles into the office. Emerging shortly with his oral orifice curling upwards. He just wanted to know if I'd lost my watch, says he as he slumps to the floor. (Hmmmm, these earthlings).
